Greenwood hands Bowling Green first loss of 2013

For the first time on the season, the Bowling Green girl’s soccer team fell. The Greenwood Gators beat BGHS 3-1 in penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation. The match had big district implications, with Greenwood moving to 3-0 in district play and 8-2-2 overall. The loss dropped the Purples to 3-1 in district, and 11-1 overall.

Greenwood proved too resilient on Wednesday night, hitting all four of their penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation and overtime. The Gators relied on goalkeeper Rachel Sunderlin to hold the Purples during overtime and penalty kicks. Sunderlin allowed only one goal during penalty kicks, and forced BGHS to miss three straight kicks to end the game. Along with Sunderlin, the Gators defense did not allow the BGHS attack to get any good looks at the goal. Even with the Purples holding possession for the better part of the game, Greenwood’s defense held BGHS back for the full 90 minutes.

The matchup had playoff implications, with Greenwood moving into first place in the district. The Gators will play their next match on September 24th against Hopkinsville, while the Purples will take on Ohio County on September 21st.
