The Greenwood Gators opened up district play with an emphatic 42-6 victory over the Barren County Trojans.
The Gators took control from the opening whistle. Xayzier Snorton broke lose for a 55 yard run to set up Malcolm Johnson who finished off the opening drive with a four yard touchdown run. Greenwood’s opening drive lasted all of 1:20 and set the tone for the rest of the game.
On the next possession Triston Wilson punched in a three yard touchdown to make the score 14-0, but Barren County would respond. Zach Knew broke lose for a huge run that put the Trojans in scoring position. On the very next play Grant Bowen took the ball right up the gut to give Barren County it’s first, and only, touchdown.
The celebrations didn’t last long. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, Malcolm Johnson handled the kickoff from Logan Sanders, waited for a hole to develop and then accelerated 75 yards for a touchdown along the right sideline. The return marked the second kickoff return for a touchdown this year by the Gators and it gave Greenwood a 21-6 lead with 5:07 to play in the opening quarter.
From that point on the Gators steadily plowed ahead with a heavy does of physicality from the boys up front on both sides of the ball. The defense recorded a season low for points allowed and stifled the Trojan rushing attack at every turn.
Unofficially, Snorton lead the offense with 94 yards and a touchdown. Alex Rhodes also provided a major contribution for the offense. The sophomore punched in the last two touchdowns for Greenwood. Jackson Adams was held in check for the most part only managing 70 yards on the ground and ended the game without a touchdown. He did, however, complete two passes for 56 yards bringing his season total to 11 completions for 246 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
The Gators will have a week off before continuing district play on October 14th at Grayson County. Kickoff for that game is set for 7 P.M. catch all the action on STBN with pregame starting around 6:45 P.M.
