Greenwood spoils Warren Central’s homecoming, 58-45

Warren Central and Greenwood squared off in what would be a very intriguing high school basketball game on Friday night at Warren Central High School.

The Dragons, who returned home following a 72-46 win at South Warren on Tuesday, welcomed in an eager Gator club that lastly traveled to Franklin-Simpson on Tuesday, falling 60-51.

Thanks to a stellar performance from Dawson Crump, who scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, the Gators (12-9) defeated the Dragons (11-7), winning 58-45 in front of a packed crowd at Tim Riley Court for Warren Central’s homecoming.

Along with Crump’s big outing, Chris Agro dropped 13 points and pulled down 9 rebounds while Luke Littrell added a production of 13 points. In its loss, Skyelar Potter carried the load for Central with 14 points and 15 rebounds on the night.

The Dragons return to action on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. on the road at Hopkinsville while the Gators hit the floor again also on Saturday evening at Glasgow, with tipoff set for 6 p.m.

From the time the ball was thrown up for the opening tipoff and for most of the match, both teams went back and forth.

Warren Central and Greenwood traded baskets all throughout the first quarter, as the Dragons had a slim 19-18 lead after eight minutes of action. At the time, Potter already had 11 points and four rebounds for Central.

The Gators ended the second quarter on a 5-0 run and helped build a four-point lead at halftime, with the scoreboard reading 31-27. In the two opening quarters, Potter led Warren Central with 11 points and 8 rebounds while Littrell had tallied 8 points for Greenwood, powered by two three-pointers.

Leading by four, the visiting Gators continued to execute in the third quarter and build a ten-point lead of 51-41 with 1:03 remaining in the period. With neither team being able to find a basket in the final minute of the quarter, the Dragons headed into the fourth trailing by double-digits and searching for a comeback.

At the 5:34 mark, a Luke Bailey three ended Greenwood’s 13-0 run, but Warren Central still trailed by eleven at 55-44. Later on with 2:50 left to play, the scoreboard hadn’t changed much, but Greenwood held a 57-45 advantage. The Dragons wouldn’t be able to get anything going in the final minutes, as the Gators recorded a big road win.
