Home Run Plays Key as Purple Claim State Title

Looking for their fourth title in five years, the Purples took to Houchens-Smith Stadium to take on Pulaski County.  The Maroons came in as the defending 5A State Champs, and averaged 47 points a game.  But the defense would be strong with both squads in this one.IMG_8523-001

Pulaski County took the opening kickoff all the way down to the Bowling Green 35 yard line.  Lee Ramsey grabbing the facemask may have been the only thing that prevented a touchdown on the opening play.  But it would also move the Maroons into the Red Zone, where they would score two plays later and gain the first lead.  The Purples were able to move the ball against the Pulaski defense, but a fumble inside the Red Zone and a turnover on downs kept Bowling Green off the scoreboard in the opening act.  But the second quarter would belong to BG, as Clark Payne would find DeAngelo Wilson on a quick out route, and Wilson would do the rest, darting in and out of Pulaski traffic for a 66 yard score to tie things up.  After the Purples force the Maroons to punt, Trey Fant would find an opening and take it to the house to give Bowling Green the lead heading into the break.

We would go back and forth in the third quarter, but no one would score.  Pulaski County had a chance for a 30 yard field goal, but it was a line drive that sailed under the goal post.  After a few touchdown plays for the Purples were called back due to penalty, Jacob Yates got a drive midway through the fourth to run the wildcat offense.  He would break out a 41 yard run to get inside the red zone.  Then Coach Kevin Wallace made the bold call to go for it on fourth and goal on the one, and Yates would punch it in to seal the win.  The Purples claim the State Title with a 21-7 victory!
