Warren Central and Hopkinsville followed Warren East vs. Shelby County in the State Farm Shootout on Saturday afternoon at South Warren High School.
In what would be a back-and-forth contest for the first part of the game, Hopkinsville used hot three-point shooting and controlled the glass throughout the entire course of the contest en route to a 77-59 victory over the District 14 Dragons.
Coming off a 70-48 home loss to Bowling Green on Friday night, Central gave all it had, but couldn’t ever build a lead and go ahead of the Region 2 Tigers. In their second-straight loss, the Dragons were led by Skyelar Potter, who scored 16 points.
Warren Central returns to action on Tuesday evening at South Warren. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
In its road win, Hopkinsville hit 12 three’s and were paced by Brandon Govan’s 16 points.
The Dragons won the opening tipoff and scored first to start, but the Tigers fired back with three-straight three-pointers to lead 9-2 in the first quarter. Hopkinsville would go on to score 13 points to Warren Central’s twelve throughout the remainder of the period and led 22-16.
In the second, many baskets were exchanged as just one point separated the scoring box for the quarter. But after two full periods of play, the Tigers held a 41-36 advantage over Central heading into the locker rooms. At halftime, Govan had 11 points while Potter had tallied 10.
Hopkinsville did more than the Dragons did in the third period.
The Tigers outscored Warren Central 23-14 in the eight-minute span and that helped them hold a 14-point lead of 64-50 heading into the final quarter of play.
Potter would foul out with still five minutes to play and big-man Josh Moss would suffer a head injury around the same time, which didn’t benefit the Dragons in any way. Hopkinsville scored 13 points to Central’s nine in the fourth, as it picked up a solid win in Bowling Green.
