In Saturday Matinee, Purples Control Region Opponent

In a rare case for Bowling Green, the Purples faced a regional foe in the second weekend of the season, facing Christian County in the Jerry Claiborne Bowl. The last time the Purples traveled to face the Colonels was a tight playoff matchup five years ago, with Bowling Green coming up short. Things would work out differently this time around.

After a 71 yard return by Tre Fant to get the game started, the Purples hit paydirt early, with a 16 yard run by QB Clark Payne to put the Purples up 7. Jamele Carothers would also run in his first touchdown of the game before Christian County would score on a 16 yard pass from Langhi to his favorite target Catlett. At the end of the first, BG led 14-6. The second quarter also went the way of the Purples, as Payne would notch two passing touchdowns, the first to DeAngelo Wilson, the second to Justin Gentry. Jacob Yates would also cross the goal line for six of his own, putting the Purples up 34-6. The Colonels would answer before the end of the half though, and make it 34-14 at the break.

In the second half, both teams held to the run game for the most part, as Carothers scored the only TD in the third on a six yard run. Payne would get one more TD pass before he ended his night, and Tre Fant capped it all off with an interception returned for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. With the running clock in place, the Purples cruised to victory 55-14.

Bowling Green hits the road again next week, taking on St. X in Louisville, Kentucky. Can BG’s speed be the difference against the big 6A foe? Join us on sportingtimesmagazine.com to find out!
