IT’S A GREAT DAY TO BE A HORNET

By Keaton Jessie- ST Reporter

The small town of Edmonton lined the square two nights in a row to celebrate, and welcome home their Hornets and Lady Hornets. The Hornet faithful got to welcome home three district championship teams. The Metcalfe football team, and both basketball teams brought home the district championship to Edmonton.

As they say at Metcalfe County High School “It’s a great day to be a Hornet!” indeed it was.

The last time the Lady Hornets and Lady Lakers faced it was a 45-28 win for the Lakers. The Lady Hornets were determined to turn that around, and that they did. Russell County only led at the end of the first quarter by one point, and that was the only time they were leading at the end of the quarter.

Freshman forward Kassady London stepped up in the spotlight and was not afraid to embrace the big moment. She went 6-8 from the free throw line and made the two free throws that would win the Lady Hornets the game. “No one thought we were gonna win except us,” London said after the win “I knew the game was in my hands and I had to hit the free throws for us to win.”

“It wasn’t until about  12 seconds left on the clock that it set in that we were about to win the district title,” coach Coffey said after the win “It is a great feeling, we won back in 2017 with coach Hurt (Josh Hurt) he has the program doing really well, and moving in the right direction. It is just great to bring the district championship back to Metcalfe, not only for the girls, but the boys as well. It is a awesome feeling.”

This is the first time since 1997 that both the Hornets and Lady Hornets won the district title in the same year.
