Allen County-Scottsville High School’s Shayna Cockrill will play collegiate golf at Lindsey Wilson College. Cockrill signed with the Blue Raider program Friday afternoon at the AC-SH library.
“I decided on Lindsey Wilson because it was close to home,” Cockrill said. “Their program did well in several tournaments last year and in their conference and I like the coaches.”
Cockrill began playing golf for AC-S as a seventh grader—helping to solidify the Lady Patriot program. She gained valuable experience on the course during the fall golf season and during summertime when she played on the junior golf circuit. The result was steady improvement from year-to-year.
The highlight of her high school career came in the fall of 2012. Cockrill fired an 82 to help AC-S to a regional runner-up finish at the Dale Hollow State Park Golf Course. The finish qualified AC-S for a team spot in the Leachman Buick/ GMC/ Cadillac/ Kentucky High School Athletic Association state championship. In the two-day event, Cockrill finished in a tie for 59th helping her team to a 12th place finish.
In her senior year, Cockrill was steady on the course. Highlights included firing a 74 to place fourth overall at a tournament in Campbellsville and carding a 79 to lead the Lady Patriots at the Lady Scotties Invitational in Glasgow. Cockrill was ninth at the Barren County Invitational and third in the district golf tournament with a nine-hole round of 39. Her high school career ended as AC-S finished fifth at the Region 4 golf tournament at Hidden Hills Country Club in Tompkinsville. Cockrill shot an 88 in her final high school competition.
Cockrill loves the game because of the challenges each course and each competition brings. She notes that golf requires you to do well individually in order for your team to be successful.
“I like golf because it’s more of an individual sport,” Cockrill added. “But, you still have to shoot a decent score as an individual in order to help the team.”
Cockrill admits that taking her game to the next level was a dream as a youngster—a dream that has been fulfilled.
“When I started, I wanted to play golf in college but I didn’t thing I would.” Cockrill admitted. “I’m excited to have this opportunity.”
Lindsey Wilson golf coach Eric Wyrick is thrilled to welcome Cockrill to his program.
“We have been very impressed with Shayna,” Wyrick said. “We are very excited to have her on our team and excited about the experience she has coming out of high school.”
The Blue Raiders are members of the Mid-South Conference and affiliated with the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). Wyrick notes that Cockrill is coming into a solid program.
“We currently have a top 25 program and our goal is to win a national championship,” Wyrick added. “We feel like we have the resources and I believe that goal is very attainable.”
AC-S golf coach Scott Stamper points out that he feels as if Cockrill’s best days on the course are in front of her.
“Lindsey Wilson will be a good fit for Shayna,” Stamper said. “She is going to have a chance to step in and be a big part of their program. I think Shayna is yet to play her best golf. I believe she has an opportunity to get a lot better at the college level.”
Cockrill is the daughter of Shannon and Wendy Cockrill.
