Lady Purples Defeat Glasgow to Open Region Play

By Joe Brunk:

Starting off their run in the Region Tournament in Diddle this year, the Lady Purples took on Glasgow on Monday night. It would be a rematch from last year’s championship game, where the Lady Purples fell 59-79.

The Lady Purples would get started early, an 8-2 run to take the lead in the first. Glasgow would only get one more basket in the first quarter, but Bowling Green would miss some early shots as well, the score only 10-4 BG after the first. After the Lady Purples got the lead up to ten in the second quarter, the Lady Scotties would go on a little run of their own, bringing it back to a three point game. A three pointer form Markizjah Mimms would push the Lady Purples lead to six, as the led 20-14 at the break. Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, with Bowling Green shooting 28%.

But the third quarter would be a different story, as the Lady Purples would dominate the third quarter. BG would shoot over 80% from the field in period, and after an injury to Bree Glover took her out of the game, the Lady Purples began to pull away, outpacing Glasgow 22-10. It was more of the same in the fourth quarter, as Bowling Green cruised to victory 65-31! Oneisha Turner was named the player of the game with 16 points. Mimms was huge off the bench with 14. With the win, Coach Lavonda Johnson is 8-0 in first round games in the Region tournament.

The Lady Purples will face either Logan County or Cumberland County in the Semifinals Saturday night! Can BG make back to back trips to the Region Championship? Join us on PurplesNation.com to find out!
