Logan County is moving on.
Despite Metcalfe County – the tournament’s underdog team – putting up a hard fight from start to finish, the Cougars were able to hold off the Hornets and earn a 72-70 overtime win on Monday night in the Region 4 Tournament quarterfinals at E.A. Diddle Arena, their first regional tournament win since 1998.
“None of these guys care about any of that stuff,” Logan County coach John Tinsley said of the long drought. “It’s a new Logan. We really don’t care about any of that stuff to be honest with you. We just want to find a way to win – and give these guys credit, they found a way tonight.”
The Hornets led 18-15 after the opening quarter before things were knotted at 30-all at halftime. Metcalfe County outscored Logan County 16-10 in the third quarter to lead 46-40 entering the fourth – and it soon built a 50-40 advantage early into the final period.
The two sides continued to go neck-and-neck throughout the remainder of the fourth and in overtime, but Anthony Woodard’s jumper with 1.6 seconds left proved to be the game-winner for the Cougars (25-6).
Woodard led the way for Logan County with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Tommy Krohn finished with 16 points and Dalton Thompson scored 13. Kelby Epley tallied 11 points to be the fourth Cougar in double figures.
Tyler London carried Metcalfe County (11-21) with a game-high 28 points, and Boston Devore scored 17.
With Logan County’s win, it’ll now face Warren Central in Friday’s 7:45 p.m. semifinal.
“The only thing I’m telling ya is we’re coming to play. We’re not coming to backdown,” said Tinsley. “We know Central’s gonna come to play, but we’re coming to play also.”
