Logan County, Todd Central square off in Thursday night football

While there may not be a district title or seeding for the playoffs on the line, it will still be rather competitive when neighboring rivals Logan County and Todd County Central square off on Thursday night in Elkton.

Logan County (8-1) has won the last two games in the series, including a 56-27 victory the last time the Cougars played in Elkton on Oct. 28, 2016. The Cougars defeated the Rebels 34-6 in Russellville last season.

The Cougars have been one of the most dominating teams in Class 4A all year as Logan County’s only setback came against Madisonville-North Hopkins—the Cougars squandering a fourth-quarter lead in a 21-17 loss to the Maroons at home.

Logan County is the 10th-best offense in the state with 43 points per night. Running back Gary Hardy is ranked 28th in the state in rushing with 1,157 yards and 15 touchdowns on the year. Quarterback Tyler Ezell also owns a spot on the state leaderboard, coming in at 27th in passing by completing 86-of-139 passes for 1,387 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Cougars have been one of the premier defensive teams in Kentucky all year long by giving up just 10.3 points per game, and the 21 points Logan County surrendered to Madisonville has been the most the Cougars have surrendered all year. Logan County has also excelled at coming up with takeaways as the Cougars have forced 24 turnovers (12 fumble recoveries, 12 interceptions) through just nine games.

Todd County Central (5-4) is seeking its second consecutive six-win season as the Rebels look to give their upperclassmen something to be happy about on Senior Night. The Rebels’ five victories so far have come against: Fort Knox, Caverna, Fulton City (forfeit), Hancock County, and—most recently—a 29-14 victory over Butler County this past Friday night.

The Rebels are predominantly a running football team as first-year head coach Darell Keith’s squad has four players with at least 300 rushing yards. JaTwan Graham and Jaquavion Mimms lead the ground attack for Todd Central with 521 and 769 rushing yards, respectively. Both players are in the Top 30 for rushing yards in Class 2A.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Todd County Central High School in Elkton as the Rebel seniors will be honored before the game. Follow the Sporting Times on Twitter for updates during.
