GLASGOW – Leading 44-41 towards the end of the third quarter on the road at Barren County, Logan County needed a boost to give the Cougars some momentum going into the final frame.
Third Bell then dished it to Tommy Krohn for a wide-open layup just before the horn, and the Cougars went on to build a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter before holding off a late Trojan rally and hanging on for a 65-61 victory at Trojan Gym on Tuesday night.
“We got the ball out in transition,” Logan County coach John Tinsley said. “We got some easy layups, we made the extra pass, we just had a lot of good looks. This team is always unselfish, and that’s the best part about this team.”
Anthony Woodard led Logan County with 19 points while Bell and Krohn added 17 and 10, respectively.
“(Logan) has a good team,” Barren County coach Warren Cunnigham said. “They have a lot of guys that can shoot it and a lot of weapons offensively. They have guys that can shoot around the basket and from the outside.”
Barren County (10-9) was paced in the loss by Gavin Withrow with 19 points while Aden Nyekan had 13. Will Bandy added 10 points, all of which came in the second half after foul trouble limited him in the first half.
Logan County (16-3) led 33-29 at halftime before the Trojans went on a 6-1 run as a basket by Withrow gave Barren a 35-34 lead. The Cougars then responded with a 12-6 scoring spurt to close out the frame as Krohn’s layup gave Logan County a 46-41 edge going into the final quarter. That momentum carried over into the first few minutes of the fourth as the Cougars expanded on their lead.
“The end of the third we lose Krohn there and give up a layup,” Cunningham said. “Start of the fourth they get a bucket, so it went from being three to about seven or eight. The end of quarters really put us in a bind.”
“That shot us up two extra points and gave us some extra momentum,” Tinsley said. “We come out the very first part of the fourth and our defense was excellent. We didn’t really let (Barren) get going.”
Logan County stretched its lead to 64-47 with 2:02 left after a three-point play by Anthony Woodard before Barren County came roaring back with a 14-1 run to close out the game.
“We showed a little fight there,” Cunnigham said. “I wish we had shown a little more fight on a consistent basis throughout the game, but at least we didn’t give in there at the end. We fought, and that’s always good to see.”
Barren County will look to bounce back on Friday night as the Trojans make the trip across town to take on Glasgow in a 15th District contest. The Scotties defeated the Trojans 63-58 at Trojan Gym back on Dec. 28.
Meanwhile Logan County will look to keep rolling as the Cougars host 13th District rival Russellville on Friday night—Logan playing its third game without starting center Nathaniel Vick.
“It’s rivalry time,” Tinsley said. “We’re trying to learn how to play without Vick. Our starting center got hurt last Tuesday at Russell County, and we’re trying to find our way without him a little bit. It’s a work in progress, but I thought we were much better (Tuesday night) than we were last Friday night.”
Trojanettes overcome sluggish start in 65-53 win over Lady Cougars
Barren County came out a little bit sluggish in the start of Tuesday night’s game against Logan County as the Lady Cougars held a 5-2 advantage two minutes into the game.
The Trojanettes were dominant from that point forward.
Barren County ended the first quarter on a 25-8 run to have a 27-13 lead after one, and the Trojanettes were able to answer every Logan County rally the rest of the way to record a 65-53 victory.
The twin sister duo of Bailey and Mallory Pedigo paced Barren County with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Elizabeth Bertram added 11 points, and McKenzie England had six points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Sarah Beth Hale led Logan County in the loss with 17 points while Paige Vanzant and Kennedy Nichols each had nine.
Barren County (17-3) built its lead to as many as 19 points in the second half, but Logan County (12-7) cut the deficit to 58-45 with just under six minutes left in regulation on a 3-pointer by Vanzant. Barren County then went down to the other end of the floor and answered with a trifecta by Mallory Pedigo, and the Trojanettes were in steady control the rest of the way.
Barren County will look to push its winning streak to three games on Friday night as the Trojanettes face crosstown rival Glasgow—looking to avenge a 51-38 loss to the Lady Scotties back on Dec. 28.
“I am positive,” Barren County coach Piper Lindsey said. “I thought we were extremely loose (Tuesday night), and I think the ceiling is high. I feel like we can get better, and that’s a good thing.”
Meanwhile, Logan County will play in its own crosstown rivalry as the Lady Cougars host Russellville. Logan County won the first meeting between the two rivals this season by a score of 60-33.
