Logan County, Hopkinsville set for rematch in Class 4A second round

The last time Logan County and Hopkinsville met was back in Week 8 in an exhilarating classic.

Quarterback Tyler Ezell’s game-winning four-yard touchdown run in the final seconds pushed the Cougars to a tight 13-12 win in grinded out fashion and helped them keep their unscathed record.

Hoptown hasn’t lost a single game since suffering that heartbreak in Russellville on Oct. 5, winning four-straight to give it plenty of momentum entering its rematch against Logan County – a showdown in the second round of the Class 4A KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl on Friday night at Cougar Field.

With its remarkable undefeated campaign still alive, the Cougars (11-0 overall) collide with the Tigers for the second time this year after a 54-18 victory over Warren Central in round one play last week. It was Logan’s first playoff win at Cougar Stadium.

In its marquee win, the Oct. 5 hero, Ezell, threw for 127 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 13 yards and a pair of scores. Running back Gary Hardy ran for 83 yards and a TD on nine carries to make for a strong outing by the Logan County offense.

Hopkinsville (5-6), who won just one out of its first seven games to open the season, has put together an impressive turnaround and is playing dominant football at the perfect time. In their last outing, the Tigers beat Warren East, 21-7, to set up the rematch with Logan County this week.

In its victory, Hoptown was led by quarterback Javier Bland, who passed for 148 yards and two TDs – both to wide receiver Mitchell Degenhardt, who finished with 62 yards in addition to 60 yards and another score on the ground.

It’s safe to say that while Logan County will be trying to keep its sensational 2017 around, Hopkinsville will have plans of upsetting the Cougars to continue its season turnaround.
