Monroe County looks to avenge loss to Glasgow

On October 13th, Glasgow and Monroe County battled out a 45-21 Scottie win that was much closer than the score indicated.

On Friday, the Scotties and the Falcons meet once more, and there is so much more on the line this time around.

As lopsided as the game in October may have seemed, there is no possible way that you can count Monroe County out of the next contest.

The Falcons earned the rematch after last weekend’s impressive 35-20 win over Lloyd Memorial, who handily defeated Newport Central Catholic 46-14 on Oct. 13.

Glasgow defeated Newport Central Catholic 27-20 last Friday.

Lots of things can change in just a couple of weeks, but let’s talk about some of the things that you can expect at Glasgow High on Friday evening.

The Scotties and the Falcons are both deadlocked at 9-3 on the season and both bring very balanced offenses on the season.

The last time these two teams squared off, Monroe had to worry about how to handle Glasgow’s Dalvin Smith at the quarterback position. On Friday, they will see him at receiver.

The Scotties have seen an emergence from quarterback Tanner Abernathy, who completed 16-of-27 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns last Friday against Newport CC. All four touchdowns and 140 of those yards fell in the hands of Smith.

The Falcons’ quarterback, Ty Mink, found similar success against Lloyd Memorial last weekend.

The senior signal-caller completed 14-of-19 passes for 159 yards and two scores while running the ball 33 times with two more scores in the win over the Juggernauts.

On the season, Glasgow has run for 2,406 yards. Running back Selverio Rescontellio has led that charge with 631 rushing yards and eight touchdowns while Smith and Nick Mitchell have each added six scores on the ground.

Smith and Abernathy have combined for 1,544 passing yards, favoring Griffin Murphy as the top reciever with 717 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns. Receiver Jaden Franklin has also made a huge impact with 372 yards receiving and seven touchdown catches.

The Falcons have run for 1,550 yards on the season, 928 yards and 13 touchdowns coming from Mink. Braden Murphy has caught 27 passes for 210 yards and six touchdowns while running for 303 yards and five more scores. Billy Michael Dyer has 400 receiving yards and five scores.

The winner of Friday night’s contest will face the winner of Friday evening’s matchup between Lexington Catholic and Danville.
