Purples advance to Elite Eight in boy’s soccer

For the second straight year, the Bowling Green Purples have advanced to the Elite Eight of the state tournament. BGHS beat Graves County 4-0 on Monday night in the first round of the state tournament. The win over Graves County extended Bowling Green’s successful season one win closer to the state finals.

The win over Graves County would not have been possible without the contributions of several Purple seniors. All four of BGHS’ goals came from seniors. Nick Otis and Felix Villatoro each scored once, while Johnny Parra found the back of the net twice in the game. The Purples were up 3-0 before the half ended, which set the tone for the second half. Parra scored his second goal in the second half to push the lead to 4-0. The early goals were insurmountable for Graves County, as they could not get any good looks at scoring. The Purple defense held GHS to only 3 shots on goal.

The impressive first round showing for BGHS is not unusual. The Purples won 7-1 in the first round of the state tournament last season against Owensboro. Bowling Green failed to advance past the Elite Eight in 2012, losing to Dunbar 3-2. The Purples have an obvious amount of seniors who can lead the way through the tournament, led by the three players who scored on Monday. BGHS will look to advance further than last season, and they appear to have the firepower and defense to do so. The win locked up a matchup with North Oldham on Saturday for BGHS.
