After a big sweep over Warren Central on Friday night, the Purples and Lady Purples looked to keep their district momentum, hosting South Warren on Tuesday. With a win tonight, the Lady Purples would claim the top spot in the district, and be in the driver’s seat for the #1 seed. Big implications in district seeding on the guys side as well, and BG looks to keep even with the Dragons.
Bowling Green would jump out to the early lead, but then would turn cold midway through the first quarter. The Lady Spartans would go on an eight point run to take the lead, and hold on to it for the rest of the period. The Lady Purples would answer back with a seven point run of their own to start the second quarter, then survive the three point barrage from South Warren to lead by one at the break 28-27. The second half would again be a game of scoring spurts, as South would score the first six points, followed by six from Bowling Green. Both teams would score 19 in the third quarter, leaving BG up by one. The game would remain tense in the fourth quarter, with multiple lead changes in the final minutes. A missed free throw in the final ten seconds appeared to give Bowling Green the win, sending Deija Moore to the line with a one point lead. But she would miss the first free throw, and Amaya Lasley would drive down the court for an open 3 to steal victory from the Lady Purples. Final score – Bowling Green 55, South Warren 57. Oneisha Turner led the Lady Purples with 18 points. Tamia Matthews also in double figures with 15, and Deija Moore had 12. The win clinches the top seed in the district tourney for South Warren, with Bowling Green likely to meet Warren Central in the first round.
Bowling Green would jump out to a quick lead in the first quarter of the guy’s game, using an eleven point run to get some separation from the Spartans. But South Warren didn’t back down, outscoring BG 12-9 in the second quarter. Bowling Green would lead by ten at the break 33-23. South Warren would go on a huge run in the third quarter, outscoring Bowling Green 23-9 in the period. But the Purples would fight back, get the lead midway through the fourth quarter, and then hold on for dear life, making just enough free throw to escape with a 61-58 win! Perry Ayers led the way with 14. Tucker Sine had 13, and Malik Carothers had 10.
