Raiders rally to 2-0 with 37-31 win over Greenwood

Caleb Huskey caught two passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns to go along with a 92-yard kickoff return while Thomas Maxey rushed for 150 yards and a score to help Warren East upset Greenwood 37-31 Saturday night in the inaugural Citizens First Bowl at WKU.

Along with Huskey and Maxey’s dominant outings, Dwayne Cook threw for 130 yards and a pair of scores while Trevor Naftel rushed for 187 yards and a touchdown to make for a strong offensive day for the Raiders, who moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2012.

The two sides traded scoring drives all throughout the contest, but Warren East scored the final 16 points of the game. Greenwood led 31-21 at the 4:09 mark of the third quarter, but the Raiders rallied to score a pair of touchdowns and earn two points on a safety to cap their comeback.

Greenwood (1-1) was led by Jackson Adams, who rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns and tossed for 19 yards. Triston Wilson recorded 162 yards and a score.

Warren East returns to action next Friday at home against Wayne County while Greenwood will host Allen County-Scottsville. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs.

3:55, fourth quarter — Warren East 37, Greenwood 31: After stalling in the Warren East end zone after a sloppy drive, Greenwood’s snap on the punt attempt was overthrown and crossed the line in the back of the zone for a safety. The Raiders received possession and a six-point advantage.

11:22, fourth quarter — Warren East 35, Greenwood 31: Trevor Naftel recorded a 39-yard run to give Warren East a 1st and Goal. On the ensuing play, the senior running back dashed in from six yards out to give the Raiders a four-point lead.

End of the third quarter: Greenwood held a slim 31-28 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

3:54, third quarter — Warren East 28, Greenwood 31: Huskey quickly answered Greenwood’s score by returning the Gators’ kickoff 92 yards to the house. It would mark Huskey’s third score. Eddie Cano PAT.

4:09, third quarter — Greenwood 31, Warren East 21: Just a couple minutes after his second score of the game, Adams tallied his third on a 76-yard touchdown run. He kept it himself and boosted straight up the middle. Ben Patterson PAT.

6:11, third quarter — Greenwood 24, Warren East 21: Greenwood jumped back in front midway through the third period on a 12-yard touchdown run by Adams. He kept it himself and pushed his way through the middle to record the score. Ben Patterson PAT.

Halftime: Warren East leads Greenwood, 21-17, at the break. After two full quarters of play, Cook has completed 3-of-10 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns – also has two interceptions. Huskey has two catches for 130 yards and two TDs. Maxey has 98 yards and a score on two carries.

Adams has 131 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries to lead the Gators. Wilson has 10 carries for 114 yards and a TD.

2:40, second quarter — Warren East 21, Greenwood 17: Following a 31-yard gain a few plays prior, wide receiver Thomas Maxey took a handoff from Cook and zoomed 67 yards down the middle of the field into the end zone for his first touchdown of the night. Eddie Cano PAT.

6:25, second quarter — Greenwood 17, Warren East 14: Greenwood gets a 31-yard field goal from Ben Patterson to retake its lead in the middle of the second period.

End of the first quarter: Greenwood and Warren East knotted at 14-14 after one complete quarter.

0:33, first quarter — Greenwood 14, Warren East 14: Triston Wilson ran from 18 yards out to even the score just before the end of the opening period. The running back took a pitch from Adams and ran a zig-zag through the right side and capped his rush with a dive into the end zone. Ben Patterson PAT.

6:45, first quarter — Warren East 14, Greenwood 7: Following the duo’s first scoring drive, they soon stuck again. On just one play, Cook hit Huskey with a deep 78-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to tack on six more points. Eddie Cano PAT.

9:57, first quarter — Warren East 7, Greenwood 7: Quarterback Dwyane Cook finds wide receiver Caleb Huskey from 52 yards out for the Raiders’ first score of the game. The two combined for big outings in East’s Week 1 win over Portland (Tenn). Eddie Cano PAT.

11:25, first quarter — Greenwood 7, Warren East 0: On the second play of the drive, Greenwood quarterback Jackson Adams keeps it himself and sprints through the middle and to the right sideline for a 63-yard touchdown run. Adams’ score capped a quick 76-yard drive in 35 seconds. Ben Patterson PAT.

Kickoff: Greenwood wins the coin toss and elects to receive the opening kickoff.

Pregame: Greenwood and Warren East will meet at 8 p.m. in the nightcap of the inaugural Citizens First Bowl at Western Kentucky University’s Houchens-Smith Stadium. The Gators won 36-7 in last season’s meeting on Aug. 19, 2016 at Greenwood High School. Greenwood is coming off a 37-12 victory over Warren Central last Friday while Warren East won 21-0 over Portland (Tenn.) last week.
