No. 4 Warren East 67, No. 5 South Warren 48 —
Trequon Patterson scored 25 points while Chauncey Greer dropped 11 to carry Warren East’s boys’ basketball team past South Warren in the opening round of the District 14 Tournament on Monday night at Warren Central High School, winning 67-48.
The Raiders (13-15) showed that they wanted their season to continue and played with pride and passion from start to finish, never allowing the Spartans (6-24) to get into a rhythm.
In its loss, South Warren was led by Jaxson Smith, who finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Warren East, with its win, advances to play top-seeded Bowling Green on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
East carried all of the momentum early.
At the 4:11 mark of the opening quarter, the Raiders were out to a 9-0 run and already had three different players find the basket. East’s lead quickly jumped to 14-4 after a Patrick Satterfield three-pointer before South Warren cut its deficit to seven at 15-8 after the first.
The Raiders opened the ensuing period on an 8-4 run, powered by Greer’s three and Patterson’s layup, to take a 23-12 lead at the 4:59 mark. Another 8-4 showing soon after gave Warren East its largest lead at 15 and made the scoreboard read 31-16 at halftime.
At the break, Patterson led all scorers with 11 points while Satterfield had tallied 9 points and a pair of rebounds.
The Raiders scored 17 points in the third compared to South’s 11 and had a 21-point advantage at 48-27 heading into the final quarter. At the time, Patterson led all scorers with 17 points and was finding numerous ways to do so.
The Spartans cut East’s lead to 13 at 54-41 with 3:26 left, but that’s as close as they would get. The Raiders turned things up a notch and went on to outscore South Warren 13-7 throughout the remainder of the contest to extend their 2016-17 campaign another day.
No. 4 Warren Central 46, No. 5 Warren East 37 (girls) —
Zakoria Hill scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and Karajah Leach added 10 points and 8 rebounds to help Warren Central’s girls’ basketball knock off Warren East, 46-37, in the opening round of the District 14 Tournament on Monday night at Warren Central High School.
The Lady Dragons (12-16) controlled the glass from start to finish, but had to hold off numerous Lady Raiders (4-24) runs in order to escape with the victory.
In its loss, Warren East was led by Cressida Duncan, who finished with 17 points and 18 boards.
Warren Central, with its win, advances to meet top-seeded South Warren on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Both sides came out fired up and ready to give their all.
After one quarter, Warren Central held a slim 11-8 lead over Warren East, as Hill already had 8 points and 5 rebounds early.
Trailing by just three, the Lady Raiders opened the ensuing period on a quick 4-1 run and took a 12-11 lead at the 5:18 mark of the second. The Lady Dragons responded with by outscoring East 11-3 throughout the remainder of the quarter and were up 22-15 heading into the locker room at halftime.
After two full periods of basketball, Hill led Central with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Duncan had 8 points and 6 rebounds for the Lady Raiders.
Warren Central jumped out to a 7-0 run to open the third quarter and then soon led 29-18 at the 4:41 mark before Warren East made it 29-20 with the clock reading 3:05. The Lady Dragons went on to add 5 more points to their side of the scoreboard and had a 34-22 advantage entering the fourth.
The two teams continued to battle in the final quarter, as Warren Central led 42-30 with 1:40 remaining. Warren East went would outscore the Lady Dragons 7-4 throughout the final minute, but it wouldn’t be enough, as the Lady Raiders fell short and had their season ended in the opening round of the tournament.
