GLASGOW — Make it eight straight playoff opening wins for the Glasgow football program.
The Scotties continued their successful 2018 campaign with a 54-6 victory over Owen County on Friday night, dominating the game throughout for 48 minutes.
Owen County (0-10) tried an onside attempt on the opening kickoff, hoping to snag early momentum against a Glasgow (10-1) team that came into the postseason averaging 38.9 points a game.
The Rebels were hoping to take away an early possession from the Scotties, instead it gave them great field position at just 50 yards out. Glasgow, behind 39 yards rushing from Tanner Abernathy, took advantage with a score from Nick Mitchell — who ended the night with 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Glasgow wasn’t going to be fooled.
“I thought we handled the situation well and I thought we played well,” Glasgow coach Jeff Garmon said. “Give Owen County credit. They came out and put up a good fight and they should be proud of what they got accomplished.”
Abernathy finished his evening with 143 total yards and four touchdowns through the air. Jaden Franklin led the Scotties in receiving with three catches for 46 yards and two scores.
Glasgow’s defense followed strongly after Mitchell’s opening end-zone visit, forcing a three-and-out on Owen County’s first possession of the game. Two plays later, after Abernathy connected with Kynarious Flynt for a 21-yard gain, Mitchell scurried to the house from 52 yards away, giving Glasgow a 14-0 with less than four minutes concluded from the first quarter.
The defense wasn’t done in the quarter.
The Scotties’ defense tacked on two points after forcing a botched snap on a punt attempt from the Rebels. Glasgow’s defense also bailed out Abernathy’s first and only interception of the game with a fumble recovery in Owen County territory. Garmon’s offense took advantage with a 10-yard touchdown catch from Flynt.
When the first 12 minutes hit zero, Glasgow had a 23-0 lead.
“The one thing I like about our team at times is we know how to start the game fast and on the right foot,” Garmon said.
Glasgow’s display of weapons were evident throughout, and one of those threats lies within Franklin. The junior wide receiver’s second touchdown grab from nine yards out helped the Scotties increase their lead to 30-0. That play was set up by a screen pass for 36 yards, which was caught by Franklin as well.
Franklin would go on to tally another touchdown, along with teammates Denzel Wood and Jayden Weyrauch. Glasgow also forced three safeties that generated six points.
With a running clock, Garmon was able to save his first- and second-string players, allowing them to rest for next week’s matchup with Carroll County.
“We come out healthy, so that’s a big thing. So we just have to get focused,” Garmon said. “The level of play is going to get better every week, and we just have to be ready to come out and grind. We’ve got to take care of ourself and continue to block well, tackle well, play physical and take care of the football.”
