Thursday’s high school baseball game between Greenwood and Bowling Green may be a pretty significant one in terms of baseball, but what makes it even more of a big night is that it’ll mark the second annual “Playing For Mason” game, which honors the late Mason Goodnight.
“I told them, ‘You’re playing for Mason Goodnight tomorrow,’ who’s connected to a lot of Purples over here,” Bowling Green coach Matt Myers said. “As close as Jason (Jaggers) is to (Mason’s Dad) Jef (Goodnight), it’s important to Jason and his family. There’s a lot of Purples close to the Goodnights. I said, ‘If you can’t play hard for Mason, then don’t come to the ballpark.’”
Goodnight, a young baseball-loving boy who passed away on April 6, 2017, played baseball for the Bowling Green East Little League organization and would’ve attended Greenwood High School.
Ever since Goodnight’s passing, he has been honored in many different ways – and the Playing For Mason game is one that means a lot to the Goodnight family, their friends, and the Bowling Green community.
“They’re near and dear to our heart. For Greenwood, for me, for Bowling Green,” Greenwood coach Jason Jaggers said. “I’m sure it’ll be another emotional night. It’s something that I think is for a great cause and benefits the community.”
Playing For Mason Night will get started around 5:30 p.m., as former Greenwood star and MLB player Corey Hart will throw out the first pitch. Donations will also be collected for the Mason Goodnight Foundation.
