Donald “D.G.” Sherrill has been named Director of Pupil Personnel for Bowling Green Independent Schools. He will join the district office administrative team on July 1, 2017. Most recently, Sherrill has served as a Bowling Green High School special education teacher, athletic director and boys head basketball coach. Upon accepting responsibilities at the district office, he has resigned from all duties at BGHS.
Sherrill recently completed his 25th year in education with 12 in BGISD. He began his career at Dawson Springs Independent Schools in 1992, serving as the Family Resource and Youth Services Center Coordinator and also as an assistant basketball coach and head baseball coach. In 1995, he moved to Hopkinsville High School where he continued to serve as the Family Resource and Youth Services Coordinator, also teaching special education and coaching basketball, track, and cross country. In 2001, he was hired by Allen County-Scottsville to teach special education and coach boys basketball. He remained at ACS until 2005, when he joined the faculty at BGHS and took over the Purples Basketball program.
Sherrill graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1991 with a degree in Sociology/Psychology. He has a Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Austin Peay State University and a Rank I from WKU.
In his application, Sherrill says, “I have learned to serve in multiple roles and to be effective working with a variety of people. I believe I have a strong work ethic and a commitment to service.”
Sherrill will begin his role as Director of Pupil Personnel, following the retirement of Jon Lawson on June 30, 2017. Responsibilities will include overseeing the Family Resource and Youth Services Centers, the school calendar process, revisions to the student discipline guidelines, absenteeism and truancy, non-resident student contracts, and he will also become the acting principal of The Academy at 11th Street, among several other responsibilities.
Superintendent Gary Fields says, “I am so excited to have DG join our leadership team at the central office. His outstanding work ethic and constant focus on helping all kids will serve him well in his new role as Director of Pupil Personnel.”
