South Warren got off to a slow start as they took on Russell County at home trying to rebound after a loss to Warren Central on Wednesday night. The 2-3 defense of Russell County slowed down the Spartans as they struggled to find the weak spots and were limited to one shot for most of their first half possessions. Russell County was paced by Kel Stotts and Colton Back in the first half with 9 & 7 respectively. The Spartans trailed 31-26 at half time.es
The second half was the Jacob Smiley show as he had 11 points in the third to give the Spartans the lead. The shots from behind the three point arc began to fall for Smiley and fellow senior Austin Bybee. South Warren hit three triples in a row to push the lead to ten in the fourth and they never looked back. The Spartans took down Russell County 66-60 as the scoring by Smiley and free throws from Gumm and Bybee were just too much down the stretch. Nick Coffy and Kel Stotts led the Lakers with 20 and 12 respectively in a losing effort. Coach Clubb was very happy to have a resilient group of young men that showed a lot of maturity here heading into to February. The Spartans have won three of their last four games.
