SOFTBALL: South Warren keeps rolling with win over Warren East

South Warren looked to the long ball to continue rolling through their undefeated season on Tuesday night, smashing two home runs on their way to an 11-4 win over Warren East.

Western Kentucky commit Shelby Nunn provided most of the firepower for the Lady Spartans, recording one of the home runs and striking out 10 batters in the circle.

The Lady Raiders (13-4) struck fast in the first inning when a double by Jeyda Bays brought in Nicki Gibbs from second base, giving East a 1-0 advantage.

After two straight three-up-three-down innings, South Warren got on the board as a passed by brought in Kaitlyn Hare, followed by a sac fly by Alexis Isable to score Bailee Collins, giving the Lady Spartans a 2-1 lead after three innings.

South tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kaitlyn Conley scored on a fielder’s choice and Abbey Mills and Alexis Helderman scored after Collins reached on an error in center field, expanding the Lady Spartan lead to 5-1.

East, however, answered quickly in the fifth inning when Western Kentucky commit Kendall Smith blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall to cut the lead to 5-3.

Shortly after, the Lady Raiders tacked on another run when Sheridan Akins reached on an error at third base to bring in Gibbs to pull East within 5-4. The Lady Spartans committed four errors in the fifth inning.

Just when East seemed to have gotten into the head of South Warren, Nunn belted a three-run home run to center field to expand the Lady Spartans’ lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Spartans (18-0) added three insurance runs as Collins scored on a passed ball and Madilyn Daugherty smashed a two-run shot over the center field wall to give South Warren an 11-4 advantage.

Daugherty and Nunn both had two hits apiece as the Lady Spartans recorded six hits all together. East picked up seven hits on the evening including two from Hailey Hymer.

South Warren will turn around and visit Greenwood on Wednesday afternoon at 5:30. Warren East will also pay a visit to the Lady Gators on Thursday afternoon at 5:00.
