South Warren dominant on the road against 5A Apollo

South Warren visited Apollo for the team’s first road game of the season on Friday and from moment one, it was clear, Brandon Smith had his young men ready to go. The Eagles gained a first down due to a penalty but punted to open the matchup, and on the first SWHS offensive play of the game, quarterback Ryder Litten found Bryan Cummings for a 69 yard touchdown. It would only get worse from there for the home team. CJ Hayes would score twice in the first half, including on the SECOND South Warren offensive play, as would Andrew Houchens and Brycen Lacey…and Devante Colton. Litten threw for two scores and had over 100 yards passing in a very short night. IMG_9175

It was a running clock situation mid-way through the second quarter and the starters were out around the five minute mark. They left the contest with a 42-0 lead. Jacob Wilde picked up two fumbles defensively and Dimitri Bibb picked off Eagles junior QB Brandon Alexander before the first string exited the field. Apollo could not stop South Warren’s running game and also gave up some big gains on pass plays. Bryan Cummings returned a kick for a touchdown, which was called back on a holding penalty. With the exception of a few flags and a couple of drops, this was nearly perfect offensive football. Considering workhorse tailback Kayron Namvong was out of the lineup with a groin injury and hip flexer, the running game didn’t skip a beat. Austin McElwain was also limited to defensive duties as a result of an injury sustained in the Rafferty’s Bowl.

The second half gave fans a look at some of the younger varsity players, but this was decided long before the opening quarter ended. Spartans roll 42-6 after a last minute Apollo score against the third unit. South Warren will head home to play Greenwood next week in a very interesting matchup between two local foes sporting undefeated early records. Sporting Times coverage begins at 6:45 with the State Farm pregame show.
