South Warren falls to Male, 9-2

After kick-starting their Friday with a 1-0 barnburner win over East Carter, South Warren couldn’t overcome the bats of the top team in the state, falling to Louisville Male in a 9-2 effort.

The fourth-ranked Lady Spartans (34-4) hung around through an inning and a half before the top-ranked Lady Bulldogs exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second inning on six hits and two South Warren errors.

After Male (28-4) plated another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to expand the lead to 7-0, the Lady Spartans scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a Madison Stumbo hit into a fielders’ choice to bring in courtesy runner Elizabeth Spencer and a sacrifice fly by Katie Conley to bring in Alexis Helderman.

The Lady Bulldogs added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the deal.

South Warren mustered four hits on the afternoon, all from different batters. Male recorded 10 hits including two apiece from Olivia Suski and Jenna Howell.

With the loss, the Lady Spartans move to the consolation bracket where they will face the winner of Mercy and Central Hardin at 7 p.m. on Friday evening. South Warren defeated Central Hardin in the first round of the state tournament in an 8-3 effort.
