South Warren tops Owensboro Catholic, 6-5

South Warren pulled another close win out of it’s hat, using a walk-off error to edge Owensboro Catholic 6-5 in the consolation bracket semifinal on Saturday morning.

The Lady Aces (26-13) struck first in the top of the third inning when Mackenzie Short hit an RBI single and Payton Hite grounded into a fielder’s choice, both scoring runs to give them a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Spartans (35-5) answered in the bottom of the third inning as Lauren Martin hit an RBI double and Madison Daugherty hit into a fielder’s choice to score runs on each of the at-bats, knotting the game at 2-2.

Hite gave Owensboro Catholic a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI double, but Madison Stumbo answered with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the inning to give the Lady Spartans a 4-3 lead.

The Lady Aces knotted the game up again in the top of the sixth inning on Bailey Simone’s RBI hit into a fielder’s choice and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Danielle Henning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, South Warren knotted the game at 5 on Karson Williams’ single with the bases loaded and won the game on an error at third base on a fly ball to bring in Daugherty for the win.

South Warren pounded out nine hits on the morning, including two from Alexis Isable. Owensboro Catholic recorded 10 hits, including three from Carson Flynn and two apiece from Hite and Alyssa Bickett.

With the win, South Warren advances to face Male in the consolation bracket title game at 1 p.m. The Lady Spartans lost to Male 9-2 on Friday afternoon. The winner of that contest advances to the state title game to face Madisonville-North Hopkins, who defeated Male 9-0 earlier in the day.
