South Warren turns back pesky Scotties

Having their work cut out for them after squandering an early lead, South Warren’s bats came alive in the sixth inning as they scored four runs to edge Glasgow 9-7 for their first win in four games.

After the teams came out of the first inning tied 1-1, the Spartans blew open a four run lead in the bottom of the second after a Sam Gage single and a three-run homer by Kirtley Lawrence gave South Warren a 5-1 advantage after two innings.

However, the Scotties (7-10) took no time in chipping away at the lead in the top of the third inning when a Lane Norris walk with the bases loaded and a two-run single by Ryan Jones brought Glasgow back within 5-4.

After the Spartans (9-11) stranded runners at second and third in the bottom of the third inning, the Scotties continued to pour on throughout the next two innings, scoring another run in the top of the fourth on a Dylan Lane ground ball to the short stop, bringing in Griffin Murphy to even the score at 5-5.

In the top of the fifth inning, Drake Poland belted a line drive to center field to bring in Norris and Jones, expanding Glasgow’s lead to 7-5.

After the Poland hit, South Warren coach Chris Gage replaced Logan Gage on the mound with junior Zack Beckner, which was the Spartans’ fifth pitcher change of the night.

After both teams exchanged turns at the plate, the Spartans came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Lawrence belted a line drive to center field, bringing in Josh Vincent to cut the Scotties lead to 7-6. Shortly after, two straight singles by Clay Nohel and Jacob Lacey and a sac fly by Trent Rice to bring in courtesy runner Cannon Mcdaniel gave the Spartans the lead back at 9-7.

South Warren had eight hits on the evening, including two apiece from Lawrence and WKU-commit Hunter Evans.

Poland, Jones, and Norris all had two hits apiece for Glasgow as the Scotties had eleven hits as a team.

South Warren hits the road Friday evening to take on Allen County-Scottsville at 5:30. Glasgow will host Metcalfe County at 5:00 on Friday afternoon. Glasgow and South Warren will meet again on Saturday, April 29th at 12:00 p.m. at Glasgow.
