South Warren welcomes Grayson County, looks to improve to 5-0

The South Warren Spartans are off to a great start.

Coach Brandon Smith and company currently stand at 4-0, but there’s something even more impressive to add to that factoid: the Spartans have not trailed a single minute this season.

South Warren’s closest skirmish with defeat was a 27-17 victory at Central Hardin on Friday night, and the Spartans will look to improve to 5-0 when they host Grayson County Friday night.

The Spartans (4-0) are led by newcomer quarterback Gavin Spurrier, who has completed 51-of-84 passes for 869 yards and eight touchdowns, while tossing five interceptions.

Wide receiver Clayton Bush has also had a great season for South Warren, the junior catching nine passes for 288 yards and five touchdowns in just four games.

On the flip side of the ball, the Spartans are giving up an average of just 11 points per game. The defensive line has been tenacious with junior defensive lineman and Notre Dame commit Jacob Lacey leading the way, and the secondary has also been stout, recording five interceptions so far this season.

Meanwhile Grayson County (1-3) is a team that is still struggling to find its identity. The Cougars are yet to score more than 14 points in a game this season, and have given up a combined 108 points in their last two games against Edmonson County and Ohio County.

Kickoff between the Spartans and Cougars is set for 7 p.m. at South Warren High School.
