Spartans Fall to Purples in D14 Semi-final

South Warren 56 – Bowling Green 91

The end of the South Warren Spartans season came sooner than many would have liked, but a quick start was soon cooled off, and the run-and-gun Purples proved to be too much for the Spartans, as they fell to Bowling Green in the District 14 semifinals 91-56.

The Spartans came out of the gate fast and furrious, matching the Purples step for step – not only on the court, but on the scoreboard as well – as quick shots from Dayton Gumm and Michael Hicks, as well as nifty inside shots from the likes of Brandon Stacker, Dylan Beckham and the aforementioned Gumm, had the Spartans down by just two after the first quarter at 18-16.

The second quarter started to play out as a similar affair. But, as the quarter went on, the step-for-step play slowly began to become a step and a half behind the Purples, until Bowling Green went on a roll in the back half of the second quarter, building up a 20 point halftime lead at 45-25.

It would be more of the same in the second half for the Spartans, as they were never able to overcome the large halftime deficit and ultimately fell 91-56 to cap off the 2014/15 campaign. The second half wasn’t all gloom and doom however – the Spartans looked good in stretches, and got some great contributions from senior Wes King, who scored seven second half points off the bench.

The Spartans season might be over on the boys end, but the girls have clinched a spot in the Region 4 tournament. But first, the D14 crown is up for grabs, as the Lady Spartans will take on Bowling Green tomorrow night at South Warren High School.
