South Warren saw little resistance in its first two district games as a member of Class 5A.
The Spartans (6-0) defeated Grayson County and Barren County by a combined score of 99-7, and South Warren will look to stay undefeated when they host Greenwood on Friday night.
South Warren is 3-1 all-time versus Greenwood but dropped a heartbreaker to the Gators, 17-16, last September. South Warren coach Brandon Smith knows they are going to get Greenwood’s best shot this year as well.
“They’re a great program,” Smith said. “Coach Seabolt has done an excellent job over there and [Jackson Adams] I feel like has been there for an eternity. We’re going to have our hands full. It’s at home, it’s a district game, and we need a win to get the home playoff game.”
Although Greenwood (2-4) has struggled so far this season, the Gators have still seen great production from Adams. Adams has rushed for 758 yards and seven touchdowns on 83 attempts, and the senior is the catalyst for the Gators’ triple option.
The Gators’ ground game has also been steadied by junior Triston Wilson, who has rushed for 540 yards and four touchdowns on 71 attempts.
Meanwhile, quarterback Gavin Spurrier leads the Spartans’ offensive charge going into Friday night. The junior has completed 67-of-110 passes for 1,116 yards and 14 touchdowns so far this season.
Juniors Cameron Harrison and Clayton Bush top the receiving corps with 217 and 289 receiving yards, respectively. Bush has also proved to be a big playmaker by hauling in five touchdown passes already this this year.
While the Spartans run an air raid-style offense, South Warren has also had playmakers in the rushing attack as well. Seniors Christian Winn and Tryce Jackson have ran for 202 and 266 yards, respectively, with Spurrier also adding 100 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as well.
Kickoff between the Gators and Spartans is set for 7 p.m. at South Warren High School. The game will also be broadcasted on STBNTV.com, with pre-game starting at 6:50.
