Spartans Lose a Thriller in the D14 Finals

By: Fletcher Keel

South Warren 57 – Bowling Green 60

The first quarter started well for the Spartans, with Deanna Taylor and Caroline Cowles hitting quick, easy-look shots for the Spartans, but after that, the shooting went cold and the play got sloppy as the Purples held, at one point, an 11-4 lead over South Warren. In true Lady Spartan fashion, however, they never said die, and were able to make the game a four-point one at the end of the first quarter at 15-11.

The second quarter was just as back and forth as the first was, and saw a plethora more scoring, but every time the Spartans came within a bucket or two, the Purples would go on another run to extend their lead.

Whatever the Spartans didn’t do well in the first half they corrected at halftime and into the second half, as they made furrious comeback after furrious comeback to force the game into a one-possession one. But, try as they might, the Spartans would never again regain the lead or tie the game, as the Lady Purples took home the District 14 crown after Colby Downing misfired on an off-balanced three point shot as time expired.

Caroline Cowles lead all Spartans scorers with 14 points while Amaya Lasley and Timitryi Patterson each finished with 12. Usually a good 3-point shooting team, the Spartans went cold from beyond the arc, hitting just three of their 16 attempted shots.

After the game, Downing, Patterson, Lasley and Cowles were named to the 2015 All-District team. In total, eight players who played tonight were named to the team.

While the District 14 title will have to wait another year, the season isn’t over just yet. The Lady Spartans will continue their season in the Region 4 tournament in E.A. Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University.
