Spartans Roll, GUMM Red Hot, Defeat Cougars

South Warren may have played its most impressive game of the season in a seven point loss at Bowling Green on Saturday, and thus entered its road matchup with Logan County with newfound confidence. Early in the game, it was all Spartans, as they held LCHS to just four points and led by 13. Dylan Beckham was the offensive story for South Warren, as he would score 14 in the first half, the final eight of which were absolutely huge.

Logan County, down 17-4, had one player in the scoring column: Lorenzo Garcia. Well, at 17-12, he was still the only player on the Cougar score sheet. He had 15 in the half, and midway through the second quarter, South Warren’s lead was trimmed to two, at 19-17. Beckham then came alive, in the right place to steal errant Logan County passes, patient down low, making the most of his opportunities. South Warren finished the half on a 10-1 run to build an 11 point lead, 29-18, at the break.

In the second half, South Warren kept the lead hovering around double figures, expanded it a bit, and then finished strong. Beckham scored just one more basket, but his rebounding was key, and he was named Bluegrass Cellular Player of the Game with 16 points. Dayton Gumm had 21 points, as he’s scored 55 in his last two games. Brandon Stacker had 17, many achieved through hustle and offensive putbacks.

It’s South Warren’s fifth win of the season and the team’s third region victory. The Spartans travel to Glasgow on Friday. STBN coverage begins with the girls at 5:50 CT.

FINAL: South Warren 68, Logan County 49
SW: Gumm 21, Stacker 17, Beckham 16
LC: Garcia 18, Whittinghill 17, Rayno 9
