Special teams lift Glasgow over Warren East, 16-14

On a night where two high-powered offenses went head-to-head, special teams and defense ended up being the difference maker as Glasgow edged Warren East 16-14 on Friday evening in Bowling Green.

Trailing 14-0 after halftime, the Scotties scored 16 unanswered points in the third quarter, including a go-ahead 26-yard field goal by Noah Brown late in the third quarter.

“I told [the team] at halftime that we would find out in the second half if we were contenders or pretenders,” Glasgow head coach Jeff Garmon said. “We just really came to play in the second half.”

After the Raiders scored the first 14 points of the game in the first quarter, the Scottie defense and special teams showed up to play by shutting down the Warren East offense and forcing two turnovers the rest of the way.

“Nothing was different defensively from the first and second halves,” Garmon said. “We gave them the ball down in the red zone and gave up that play over the top [to Huskey], but that’s really all that we gave up.”

The Raiders scored both of their only touchdowns on the night in the first quarter. The first came when an interception by Warren East’s Gregory Barnes set up Thomas Maxey for a 13-yard touchdown run.

After a Glasgow punt, Warren East quarterback Dwayne Cook hit Caleb Huskey over the top for a 76-yard touchdown pass to put the Raiders on top 14-0.

Warren East (3-2) received the second half kickoff with the lead when Cook’s pass was batted into the air and picked off by Glasgow’s Andrew Carter, who returned it to the Raiders’ seven-yard line.

Two plays later, Selverio Rescontellio scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns from one yard out, cutting the Warren East lead to 14-7.

After a Raider three-and-out, Tanner Abernathy entered the game at quarterback in place of an injured Dalvin Smith and broke off two long runs to get the ball back to the Warren East seven-yard line, where Rescontellio found pay dirt again from that distance. However, a botched snap on the extra point kept the Raiders’ lead at 14-13.

On the ensuing Warren East possession, a bad snap on a Raider punt bounced back to their 11-yard line where Glasgow’s Gavin Burd recovered to give the Scotties the ball in the red zone, which lead to Noah SmithBrown’s go ahead field goal with 36.5 seconds left in the third quarter to give Glasgow a 16-14 lead.

“I thought everybody played well in the second half. We had a lot of young kids come in and replace some injured ones and they did a very fine job,” Garmon said. “You have to give credit to Noah. I felt like he had a lot of pressure on him to make that kick.”

After the field goal, the Raiders failed to corral a short kickoff by the Scotties and gave up the ball on Warren East’s 28-yard line.

Glasgow (4-1) totaled 233 yards of offense on the night. Rescontellio had 109 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns to lead the Scotties’ offense.

Warren East posted 184 yards of offense, Maxey rushing for 145 yards on 29 carries and a score and Cook’s 76-yard connection to Huskey for another.

Warren East will hit the road next week to take on Monroe County, who defeated Campbellsville 27-0 on Friday evening. Glasgow will host Franklin-Simpson next week after the Wildcats suffered a narrow 24-21 loss to Meade County on Friday night.
