All Area Player of the Year: Kendall Wingler (Meade County) – 861-points says it all. What’s most interesting is that Kendall Wingler has been doing that every season during her emergence as a Varsity player for the Lady Waves. Coach Dina Hackett, who was a pretty good guard during the State Tournament led Lady Waves during the 80’s, knew that she could always count on No.55’s 30.8-point average and her 49.1 % shooting from the floor. There’s no question that it may be a long time before another player comes along like Wingler.
All Area Coach of the Year: Donnie Swiney (Elizabethtown) – This season, the Lady Panthers were loaded with experience and talent, but the one thing that coach Donnie Swiney didn’t count on was injuries and problems in the starting lineup as Elizabethtown went through parts of their season with three of their five starters missing. Still, he managed to fill the missing pieces with stop gap measures and it all came together for their tenth 5th Region Title and for that, Swiney was our Coach of the Year.
All Area First Team:
Kendall Wingler (Meade County) – A shooting guard that was the ultimate scorer for her team as she led them in that category for the last four seasons. Wingler can drive and shoot from the perimeter and can lead the break with effectiveness. 861-points and she should be better at the next level.
Ella Thompson (Bethlehem) – A power forward that can score, rebound and be a disruptor on the defensive end. Thompson followed up her sophomore season with another great junior season scoring 568-points, averaging 16.7 points a game, while shooting 53.8% from the floor and can run the court like a guard.
Ameila Hodges (Bethlehem) – Like teammate Thompson, Hodges also added on to her great sophomore season with a followup year scoring 539-points, while shooting 44.4% from the floor and averaging 15.9 points a game. Like Thompson, Hodges has a way of making everyone better as well and should be even better next season.
Whitney Hay (Elizabethtown) – One would have to wonder what would have happened if Whitney Hay had stayed healthy during her senior season at Elizabethtown. Still, she managed to put 473-points on the board, while shooting 46.2% from the floor and averaging 18.0-points a game while still pulling down 132-rebounds.
Isabel Grimes (Breckinridge County ) – After having a break through eighth-grade season as a starter, Grimes has continued to add on in her freshman season and last season during her sophomore year scored 430-points, while shooting 41.0% from the floor and averaging 15.9-points a game while running the Lady Tigers offense.
