Boys Basketball
Week 4
School Record Last Week
- Bowling Green 4-0 1
Outlook: The Purples have been on COVID-19 pause as five-consecutive games have been canceled for Bowling Green. However, the team appears ready to return to the hardwood this week with two district games on the schedule. On Tuesday, coach DG Sherrill’s club will host Greenwood, before hosting Warren East on Friday. The Purples beat the Gators and Raiders earlier this month by a combined win margin of 78 points.
2. Warren Central 3-1 3
Outlook: Warren Central improved its stock this week with two big region victories over then-#5 Greenwood and then-#6 Allen County-Scottsville. The Dragons blew by the Patriots on Tuesday night by 30 points before erasing a small third-quarter deficit against Greenwood to cruise to a 22-point victory. The three-pointer helped boost the Dragons in both wins as the club hit 14 three-pointers on Tuesday before splashing in 11 against Greenwood. Jaiden Lawrence nailed three three-pointers in each game, while Izayiah Villafuerte hit four in the Greenwood game. Central’s Tuesday meeting with Warren East has been canceled, but the Dragons will host South Warren on Friday night.
3. Clinton County 8-1 2
Outlook: Clinton County sandwiched victories over Campbellsville and Jackson County with a home loss to Allen County-Scottsville. Nick Delk had a dominant week, averaging 24 points over the three games while grabbing over 6 rebounds per contest. Coach Todd Messer and company will stay in Albany again this week, hosting district foe Metcalfe County on Thursday. The Bulldogs will then invite Madison Southern and Pickett County for two more home games on Saturday and Sunday. The game with Madison Southern is a part of the Robbie Davis Memorial Classic.
4. Franklin-Simpson 3-1 4
Outlook: The Wildcats only played once last week, a 60-52 home victory over district foe Russellville. Dre Miller had a monster performance, scoring 34 points on 8-of-12 shooting (5-9 from 3). The senior is averaging 25.2 points per game and is shooting nearly 56% from the field. Coach Dee Spencer’s club is on COVID-19 pause this week, meaning games with Allen County-Scottsville, Todd County Central, and South Warren are all canceled. Franklin is set to return on February 2 against Butler County at home.
5. Greenwood 5-4 5
Outlook: Greenwood went 2-1 this past week, continuing its streak of alternating wins and losses every other game. Home wins over Hopkinsville and Russell County were sandwiched around a road district loss at Warren Central. Cade Stinnett averaged 21 points per game this week on 62% shooting. Aaron Brown led the Gators with 8 rebounds per contest. All three of Greenwood’s games are canceled this week and it appears the club will resume play with a road date on February 2 at Barren County.
6. Allen County-Scottsville 5-2 6
Outlook: Allen County-Scottsville nearly took over Greenwood for the fifth spot after its win over then-#2 Clinton County; however, the 30-point loss at Warren Central was slightly worse than Greenwood’s 22-point loss (albeit ACS was without Mason Shirley against WC). Shirley hit three three-pointers in the upset win at Clinton County, but Jax Cooper stole the show as the senior led the Patriots with 14 points, including the go-ahead basket in the final seconds to secure the win. AC-S returns home this week with games on Friday and Saturday against Monroe County and Hancock County.
7. Barren County 6-3 7
Outlook: The Trojans stayed put at #7 with three wins in three tries. Barren County is now 4-1 in games without star Aden Nyekan, who went down with a torn ACL in an overtime win over Russell County two weeks ago. In Nyekan’s absence, Taye Poynter and Mason Griggs have stepped up. Poynter is averaging 16.2 points per game over the last five games, while Griggs is at 12.4. Poynter score at least 18 points in three of the five games and Griggs led the team with 21 points in a 62-49 win over Logan County on Friday. Barren hosts Central Hardin on Tuesday before traveling to Glasgow on Friday for a district meeting with the Scotties.
8. South Warren 3-1 8
Outlook: South Warren picked up two 22-point wins this week, beating Adair County, 64-42, on Friday before traveling to Monroe County and defeating the Falcons 55-33 on Saturday. In the Adair victory, five players scored at least five points, led by Luke Burton’s 11 points. Tayshaun Jones and Cooper Myers each scored 10 points in the victory over Monroe County as five players scored at least seven points. The Spartans host Apollo on Monday night – after defeating the Eagles 58-45 on January 16 – before traveling to Warren Central for a district game on Saturday.
9. Metcalfe County 6-2 9
Outlook: Metcalfe County swept all three of its games last week, beating Adair County, Edmonson County, and Foundation Christian Academy. Four players are averaging at least 13.3 points per game – Peyton Dial (14.8), Jax Allen and Wyatt Blythe (13.5), and Boston Devore (13.3). The Hornets host Cumberland County before traveling to Clinton County and Casey County to end the week.
10. Russellville 3-3 10
Outlook: The Panthers defeated Caldwell County before losing a district game at Franklin-Simpson. Jaquis Todd continues to lead the Panthers at 15.8 points per game, while Josh Allen chips in 10.7 points per contest and 6.7 rebounds. Russellville travels to Dawson Springs on Monday before hosting Logan County on Friday in another 13th District battle.
