Streak Ends at 48 For Purples, Ready to Make Run at 4th State Title.

With the Homecoming crowd looking on, the Purples hosted the McCallie Blue Tornado on Friday night.  Many saw this Tennessee squad as the best team on the BG schedule this season, and made for an exciting game that came down to the final moment.DSC_6141 (571x800)

Purples forced a fumble off a lateral pass during McCallie’s first drive, which set up BG inside the 5 yard line.  Jamale Carothers would punch it in for 6 just a few plays later.  On their next drive, Bowling Green had the chance to make it a two score game, but the Blue Tornado blocked the field goal attempt, and ran it back all the way for a touchdown, tying it up in the second quarter.  The Purples would answer with a one yard TD run by Jacob Yates, but McCallie answered immediately with a 43 yard pass on the next drive.  The Purples would finish the half with a nice 2 minute drill, but the extra point goes awry from the snap, and the Purples would lead 20-14 at the half.

As much scoring as there was in the second quarter, it was the exact opposite in the third.  Neither team lights up the scoreboard after the break, and the Purples would continue to hold on to the lead until the final minute of the game.  JaVaughn Craig, the Blue Tornado QB, would keep the option for himself on a 17 yard run to set McCallie inside the five yard line.  One play later, he would find Matt Brock for the touchdown with 24 seconds remaining.  BG would try a trick play, but would be intercepted, and the win streak ends at 48 for Bowling Green.  Final Score Purples 20, McCallie 21.

Purples open up district play next week, hitting the road to Barren County.  Can the Purples keep their state title streak alive?  Guess you’ll have to keep joining us at PurplesNation.com to find out!
