Sweet 16 | Scott High next on BG’s path to title

LEXINGTON – After overwhelming a talented Scott County team in the quarterfinals of the 100th Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Tournament on Friday, Bowling Green now turns its attention to Scott High, its opponent in Saturday’s semifinal round.

The Purples (34-2) will square off with the Eagles (23-12) at 6:30 p.m. (ET) at Rupp Arena in what will be the two programs’ first-ever meeting. Bowling Green enters the final four riding a 27-game winning streak while Scott has won five straight. BG is the champion of Region 4 while the Eagles won the Region 10 title.

Bowling Green advanced to its third semifinal in the last four seasons by knocking off Scott County – the top-ranked team in the state – 68-53 in the first quarterfinal contest of the tournament. The evenly-matched teams went at it all throughout the first half, but the Purples used a big fourth quarter – one in which it outscored the Cardinals 18-6 – to put themselves on top.

Terry Taylor scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Deangelo Wilson finished with 20 points of his own. Zion Harmon added 16 points and four assists.

Scott blew past Perry County Central, 74-52, in Friday’s second matchup to earn its spot against Bowling Green – the second-ranked team in the state. The Eagles led by just four at 37-33 midway through the third quarter, but closed with a 19-4 run to pull away and never look back. Scott forced 23 Central turnovers and scored 28 points off those.

In the Eagles’ victory, Jake Ohmer, who scored 41 points in Wednesday’s win, poured in 32 points to go along with 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
