Part One — Baseball and Softball

By Perry Swack

The KHSAA dead period is alive and well as we enter into the month of July. For many coaches and athletes, it’s the only time off they will have all year. Before we dive into fall sports later this month, we wanted to recap an eventful spring around the Greater Bowling Green Area. Keep reading for some of the top headlines from baseball, softball, tennis, track & field, and lacrosse. It was another banner season for many of our area teams.

Baseball – Russell County wins second region title in three seasons against packed field

After reaching the state finals in 2022, the Russell County Lakers made it back to the state tournament after winning its second region championship in three seasons. The 16th District champions were led by Mayes Gosser and Trace Stringer at the plate. The junior Gosser led the team with 46 runs, 57 hits, 50 RBI, and a .426 batting average. The senior Stringer had 55 hits, 39 RBI, scored 43 runs, and batted .394. He also led the team on the mound with nearly 60 innings pitched, going 9-1 with a 2.62 ERA and 43 strikeouts. Three pitchers (Stringer, Austin Bartrug, and Lincoln Helm) combined for a record of 19-3. The Lakers overcame two regular-season losses to Warren East in the regular season to defeat them 12-3 in the region championship game and reach the state tournament.

The Raiders had a great season on the diamond, winning their first district title since arriving in the 15th District. Senior Maddox Tarrence led the way with 46 hits, third-best in the 4th Region. Greenwood won its first 14th District championship since 2013 behind one of the top pitching staffs in the state. Junior Nathan Howard paced the Gators with a record of 8-1 and 62 strikeouts to go along with a 1.62 ERA. Greenwood’s team ERA of 2.07 was among the state’s best. Elsewhere in the 14th District, Ethan Reynolds of South Warren had an outstanding season at the plate, ranking among the state’s best in hits (45), home runs (9), RBI (38), batting average (.455), and slugging percentage (.889).

Bowling Green missed the region tournament for the first time since 2017; however, the Purples started the season 16-0 and won nearly 30 games. Senior Ethan Madison led the way with 16 doubles, six home runs, 37 RBI, and a slugging percentage of .755. Jackson Idlett posted one of the top earned run averages in the state at 0.86 in over 40 innings of work. Drew Isenberg was right behind at 1.35 in over 50 innings on the mound. Idlett, Isenberg, and Max Buchanon combined for a record of 18-3. Franklin-Simpson won the 13th District for a second-straight season and reached the region semifinals.

Softball – South Warren reaches state semifinals for third time in program history

South Warren was considered the best softball team in the state of Kentucky for much of the 2024 season and came painstakingly close to appearing in the one game that has eluded the Lady Spartans: the state championship. Coach Kelly Reynolds’ club began the season 18-0 en route to a school-record 39 wins. Junior McLaine Hudson set the state record for hits in a season with 93, to go along with 81 runs, 67 RBI, 14 doubles, 22 home runs, and a batting average of .620. Kinleigh Russell and Hadley Borders also posted batting averages above .500 as Russell hit .598 with 55 runs and a team-best 21 doubles, while Borders scattered 60 hits, drew 32 walks, and hit .504. Layla Ogden knocked in 65 runs at the plate and went 20-0 with a 1.11 ERA on the mound. The sophomore struck out 144 batters in over 100 innings of work. Teammate Courtney Norwood went 16-3 with an ERA of 1.36, compiling 139 strikeouts and only 14 walks in 98 innings. The Lady Spartans will bring back virtually its entire team in 2025, making them an easy favorite to capture the elusive state title next spring.

Barren County had a banner year on the diamond as well. The Trojanettes reached only their third region title game in the last 25 years (2004, 2010) and nearly sprung the upset on the Lady Spartans in the region finale, before falling 4-2. Senior Katie Murphy led the way with a batting average of .570 with 65 hits, 64 runs, 59 RBI, 23 doubles, and seven home runs. Her slugging percentage of 1.044 was also among the state’s best. Freshman pitcher Shea Bogue went 22-4 on the mound in nearly 150 innings pitched with 76 strikeouts. Logan County won its fourth 13th District title in five seasons behind Emerson McKinnis’s 14 home runs and .536 batting average, while Clinton County captured its first 16th District championship since 2009. Three Lady Bulldogs tallied more than 50 hits as Lily Hickman (53), Lauren Winningham (51), and Lexi Messer (50) led the way.

Warren East and Greenwood were among the state leaders in various hitting categories, with the Lady Raiders’ Lydia Jones batting .488 with 61 hits, 43 runs, 43 RBI, and 15 doubles. Teammate Jordan Brooks tallied 57 hits to go along with a .460 batting average. Greenwood’s Cali Huff batted .447 with 46 hits, 47 RBI, 43 runs, and a whopping 16 home runs, while Savannah White hit .453 with 45 runs and 34 RBI.

4th Region Girls Tennis Preview

By Perry Swack

Storylines abound as the 4th Region singles and doubles tennis championships begin this week in Bowling Green. The boys’ singles and doubles events will be held at Buchanon Park, while the girls’ events will be at nearby South Warren High School. The tournaments will begin on Friday, May 17 at 9:30am. It will continue on Saturday, May 18 before the semifinals on 5/20 and finals on 5/21 complete the yearly championship.

On the girls’ side it all begins with three-time defending singles champion, Arden Dethridge of Greenwood. The junior has won the last three region titles in girls’ singles but will compete in the doubles’ event this year with Avery Overmohle. Overmohle reached the quarterfinals of the state doubles in 2023 and the round of 16 in 2022, pairing with Greer Glosick. Although Dethridge and Glosick have as much postseason experience as nearly anyone in the 4th Region, there will be mostly fresh faces behind the Lady Gator duo. “The girls are really young, but are talented,” noted head coach Tim Dethridge. “We will have first-year region players Julianne Ashby, a seventh grader, paired with Meredy Law, a ninth grader.” While Dethridge and Overmohle are seeded first in the event, Ashby and Law are seeded seventh. Both groups will receive a first-round bye.

Photo provided by GHS Tennis

Although the Lady Gators are the top seed, the Lady Spartans of South Warren have won seven-straight titles in girls’ doubles. Ainsley Stobaugh paired with Morgan Robertson last season to win the region title; however, she will be paired with Cesca Poole this season. The duo are seeded second. Poole was the region runner-up in 2023 in singles and was a semifinalist in the ‘22 doubles alongside Robertson. South also boasts the #3 seed in Peyton Lemily and Paisley Harris. The high seeds are a reflection of a successful season for the Lady Spartans. “We’ve had a really good year,” said head coach Chad Young. “The girls are 17-3 which ties the school record for wins in a season. Both teams have played some of the best teams in the state as well as some quality teams in Tennessee.”

Photo provided by SW Tennis

The other pairings that will receive a bye include Allen County Scottsville’s Kennedy Carter and Allison Ford seeded fourth after reaching the region quarterfinals a season ago. Russell County’s Ellie Terry and Breanna Trautman are fifth after also reaching the quarters in ‘23. Barren County’s Madeline Prichard/Lauren Neville duo (sixth) and Metcalfe County’s Bree Jolly/Aubrey Glass (eighth) round out the final byes for the doubles event.

While South Warren has dominated girls’ doubles, Greenwood has won five of the last six singles titles. The Lady Gators are seeded #1 and #2 in the bracket. Seventh-grader Chloe Dickens is the top seed and freshman Addison Hales is second. South’s Morgan Robertson is seeded third and will play singles in ‘24 after a successful run in doubles over the last few years, as noted above. Lady Spartan teammate Luna Poole is seeded fourth and is 12-0 on the season. In girls’ singles only four byes are awarded, meaning the remaining 28 players will begin playing Friday morning at SWHS.

The remaining four seeded players are as follows:

#5 Addyson McFall, Barren County

#6 Helenda Mehner, Allen County-Scottsville

#7 Abby Helm, Russell County

#8 Jacinda Dwyer, Warren East

The semifinalists in both the singles and doubles events will qualify for the state tournament which will be held May 28-30 at Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville.

The leap year may be extending the month of February one extra day, but no one told the high school basketball teams in the 4th Region. For all they know, March has arrived. With three buzzer-beaters and eight upsets, the first week of the 2024 postseason has not disappointed and seen fireworks from Scottsville to Russell Springs.

Metcalfe County 68, Monroe County 66 – 16th District Boys First Round

It all started on Sunday, a day when only two boys’ games were being contested across the Commonwealth. Down 66-65 with three seconds left, sophomore guard Maddux Garrett cut to the left wing and received the in-bounds pass from Ben Shirley. Garrett calmly received the pass and squared up to the goal in one motion, releasing the would-be winning three with just over a second left. He hit nothing but net and the Hornets advanced to the semifinals to take on top-seeded Russell County. Cade Button led Metcalfe with 26 points, while Hudson Jessie scored 21 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in the win. Coach Brandon Brockman’s club used the momentum from Sunday to dispatch Russell County, 68-51, on Tuesday and advance to the 16th District championship.

Allen County-Scottsville 55, Barren County 52 – 15th District Girls Semifinals

On Monday night, the madness continued. A back-and-forth affair left the Trojanettes of Barren County clinging to a 52-50 lead with less than 15 seconds to go in the fourth quarter. Allen County-Scottsville senior Jayleigh Steenbergen dribbled near the right corner and pitched the ball to junior Riley Roy. Steenbergen’s dribble handoff created enough separation between Roy and her defender that Roy was able to get a clean look at a three-pointer from the right wing. 53-52. With less than five seconds to play, the Lady Patriots held a lead it would not relinquish. ACS freshman Avery Morris and BC senior Abby Varney each led the way with 20 points for their respective teams. The loss eliminated the Trojanettes from contention for the 4th Region championship, a tournament it would have entered as one of the favorites. Allen County will have the chance to win its first district title since 2015, while Barren’s streak of six straight championships is over.

Glasgow 59, Warren East 56 – 15th District Boys Semifinals

If two game winners in two nights were not enough, Tuesday ensured the streak continued. Warren East had defeated Glasgow three times this season, including by 27 points in mid-December. The Scotties entered the game with only eight wins on the season but played like the team that nearly knocked off the Raiders in January (a two-point loss, 64-62). Glasgow led for a majority of the game, holding the lead at the end of the first three quarters; however, the defending district champion Raiders were not going down without a fight. Tying the game late, it seemed the game may move to an overtime period. Enter GHS guard John Carter Walbert. As he had done all night, the senior took the ball when the game mattered most. Flanked by an East defender, Walbert rose up for three as the clock ticked down from three seconds. Splash. Game over. 59-56. The Scotties were moving on to the district finals for the second time in three seasons. They will face Barren County in search of their first title since 2019.

Other Scores of Note

13th District Boys – #4 Russellville (6-25) ends #1 Franklin-Simpson’s (14-13) season, 59-54

14th District Girls – #3 South Warren (13-15) blows by #2 Greenwood, 66-39

16th District Boys – #3 Cumberland County (16-13) eliminates #2 Clinton County (19-11), 67-59

Region’s Best descend upon Barren County this week

By Perry Swack

The 4th Region’s top volleyball players will take to the hardwood this week at Barren County High School with one goal in mind: a region championship. The sport of volleyball requires seamless cooperation between the six players on the court. If any one player is out of position, the odds at scoring a point drop significantly. Within those six positions are unique places on the court. The 4th Region features some of the best volleyball players in the state. In this article, we highlight two players from each of the remaining eight programs vying for a championship.

Aubrey Sears & Kambell Porter, Logan County

The long-time 13th District champions etched another title in their belt behind its talented duo of Aubrey Sears and Kambell Porter. The junior Sears notched nearly 450 kills in the regular season to go along with 30 total blocks and 65 service aces. The setter Porter tallied 511 assists, 104 digs, and 35 aces for the Lady Cougars Logan County begins its 4th Region Tournament against Clinton County on Monday at 5:30pm.

Landree Moons & Jonna Upchurch, Clinton County

Landree Moons is averaging nearly five kills per game with 390 in the regular season. The senior has also recorded 109 solo blocks, 218 digs, and 41 service aces. Senior setter Jonna Upchurch has tallied a whopping 508 assists which is nearly 85% of her team’s total assists on the season. Upchurch also has 242 digs to her name as the Lady Bulldogs qualified for an eighth-straight region tournament.

Georgie Tabor & Ava Kinslow, Allen County-Scottsville

The Lady Patriots return to the region tournament behind the strong efforts of their sophomore setter and senior libero. The sophomore Tabor has assisted on 529 points, while recording 273 digs. The senior Kinslow has tallied a team-leading 427 digs and assisting on 81 points and 34 service aces. In the 15th District semifinals, Tabor assisted on 35 points while Kinslow recorded 34 digs to help ACS qualify for another 4th Region Tournament. The Lady Patriots take on Bowling Green on Monday at 7:30pm.

Amirra Bailey & Makenna Kerrick, Bowling Green

The 14th District champions will be looking for a third-straight region title at Barren County next week. Sophomore Amirra Bailey has been a key contributor for the Lady Purples on each of their region-title winning teams. The middle blocker leads the team with 358 kills, 85 total blocks, and 57 service aces. Senior setter Makenna Kerrick recorded 430 assists in the regular season to go along with 113 digs and 44 service aces for the Lady Purples.

BG’s Amirra Bailey (left)

Jada Knight & Makenna Rine, Warren East

From 2004 to 2021, only four schools reached the 4th Region championship game in volleyball. In 2022, Warren East made it five. Two players that played a major role on that run were Jada Knight and Makenna Rine. Back for a farewell run as seniors, Knight and Rine have excelled on the hardwood in ‘23, leading the Lady Raiders to consecutive 15th District championships. In the district title match, Knight doled out 40 assists and 14 digs, while Rine led the way with 19 digs.

WE’s Jada Knight

Julia Warren & Caydence Johnson, Franklin-Simpson

Franklin-Simpson returns to the 4th Region Tournament for the first time since 2018 after finishing runner-up in the 13th District. Sophomore libero Julia Warren leads the 4th Region in digs with 502. Fellow sophomore Caydence Johnson leads the region in service aces with 116 on the season. The Lady Wildcats will look to continue their run as they open up 4th Region play with Warren East at 5:30 PM on Tuesday.

Aubrey Packer & the Whittinghill Sisters, Greenwood

It might not be a true duo with three players included, but it’s hard not to recognize this trio of Lady Gators in 2023. Senior Aubrey Packer leads the way with 413 kills in the regular season alone, while the setting duo of Lila and Samantha Whittinghill have combined for over 900 assists, each with more than 450 on the season. The freshman Lila also leads the team with nearly 100 service aces.

Ella Pierce & Briley Murray, Russell County

The 16th District champions will face off against Greenwood on Tuesday evening at 5:30 PM in the region tournament’s opening round. Two Lady Laker players were named to both the All-District Team for the regular season and the tournament: sophomore Ella Pierce and senior Briley Murray. Pierce spends her time as the team’s defensive specialist, or libero, while Murray operates on the opposite side as the right-side hitter.

By Perry Swack

Bowling Green won its fourth-consecutive 4th Region Tournament this March. With the Lady Purples set to graduate their top three scorers, who might we see lift the trophy in 2024? Coach Calvin Head’s team will certainly retool and are expected to contend again, but who will challenge for the title of 4th Region champion? It’s never too early to project what the next season on the hardwood might look like!

*Team rosters may change over time but this is how they project at the end of the 2022-23 season. Players listed as their 2023-24 class.

School (2022-23 Record)

Barren County 28-7

Returning: Abby Varney (Sr), Katie Murphy (Sr), Kaitlyn Elmore (Jr), Katie Geralds (Jr), Taylor Strange (Jr), Ann Ashley Atkinson (So), Mary Warren (So)

Departing: Macy Lockhart, Adison Smith

Nearly every player from Piper Lindsey’s rotation will be returning next winter for the Trojanettes including All-Region standout Abby Varney and her 16.8 points per game. Barren County will be among the favorites to win its first region title since 2019.

Departing: Meadow Tisdale, Tanaya Bailey, Saniyah Shelton

Bowling Green will lose three players who won four-straight 14th District and 4th Region titles and were each named to the Sporting Times All-Hoops Team; however, the Lady Purples will not have a bare cupboard next winter. Expect Calvin Head and his program to continue contending in the 4th Region with the likes of JaSiyah Franklin (7.4 PPG), Ryleigh Campbell (7.7 PPG) back from a season-ending injury, and Katy Smiley (6.1 PPG).

Departing: None

Everyone will be set to return for the three-time 16th District champions in 2023-24. Kassady London averaged 15.4 points per game this season, while Anna Blythe averaged 9.8 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds per game. The Lady Hornets have reached the region semifinals in each of the last two seasons. Might a championship game appearance be in the cards for 2024?

Departing: Carly Nettles, Kendra Coe, Emma Craft

Coming off of a 20-win season and returning six of its top seven scorers, expectations will be high in Cumberland County next winter. Madi Cooksey (11.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG) and Abby Morgan (10.6 PPG) will be go-to offensive threats for the Lady Panthers as they seek to reach the 4th Region Tournament for the first time since 2015.

Departing: Kayla Grant, Jessica Peterson

For the first time in eight seasons, the Lady Gators will take the floor with someone other than Zach Simpson on the sideline. Greenwood will return a majority of its rotation, including All-Region performer Leia Trinh who led the 4th Region with 19 points per game.

Departing: Gracie Hodges, Lydia Frank, Mila Munrath, TyKeidra Garrett

The Lady Spartans will lose three of their top four scorers from this season; however, they will return McLaine Hudson and her 11.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. In a much more wide-open 14th District, South will like its chances to reach the 4th Region Tournament for the second time in three seasons.

Departing: Hadley Turner, Malyea Partinger, Ashanti Johnson, Jakaya Warfield

Franklin-Simpson will return three of its top four scorers from a team that went undefeated against district opponents in the regular season. Katelyn McAlister will be charged with leading Ashley Taylor’s squad after averaging 7.9 points per game this season and hitting 59 three-pointers.

Departing: A’miyah Collier, Jaylah Kees, Kilby Long, Brinley Mason, Jordin Morris

In Orlando Hayden’s first season at the helm, the Lady Panthers won their first district championship since 1999 and first game in the region tournament since 1993. What can we expert for an encore? Russellville loses three of its top four scorers but will return 13th District Player of the Year Lareesha Cawthorn. The upcoming junior led the region in rebounding at 13.1 and was second in scoring at 17.5 points per game.

Departing: Jaylee Covington

Allen County-Scottsville will return its entire rotation outside of Jaylee Covington next winter. Led by Avery Morris (14.6 PPG) and Jayleigh Steenbergen (12 PPG, 6 RPG), the Lady Patriots will be trying to get back to the 4th Region Tournament for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

Logan County will be set to return its entire team aside from All-Region performer Gracie Borders. The Lady Cougars will turn to its senior trio of Nora Epley (9 PPG, 64 three-pointers), Emerson McKinnis (5.5 RPG) and Emily Borders (7 PPG) to help the program win its first district title since 2020.

15th District Girls Basketball Tournament Preview

February 20-23 – Warren East High School

2022 Champion – Barren County

4th Region Player of the Year Raven Ennis was held to only nine points but Barren County cruised to its fifth-straight district championship in a 54-30 victory over Monroe County. Macy Lockhart led the way with 13 points, while Paisley Ford hit three three-pointers and scored 13 points in the Lady Falcons final 15th District game.

Last Five Championship Games

2022 – Barren County over Monroe County

2016 – Barren County over Glasgow

2020 – Barren County over Glasgow

2019 – Barren County over Glasgow

2018 – Barren County over Glasgow

Schedule

Monday, February 20 @ 6:00pm – #1 Barren County vs. #4 Warren East

Tuesday, February 21 @ 7:45pm – #2 Allen County-Scottsville vs. #3 Glasgow

Thursday, February 23 @ 6:00pm – Championship Game

#1 – Barren County (24-6)

How They Can Win

Unblemished in its last 32 district games, Barren County will look to add to its impressive record at Warren East High this week. The Trojanettes won each of their six district games by an average of 16.9 points per game. Led by junior Abby Varney’s 16.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, coach Piper Lindsey hopes her club will use its stingy team defense to win a sixth-consecutive district championship. Barren is ranked fourth in the state in points allowed per game (36.9). Between Varney, Katie Murphy, and Katie Gearlds, the squad is confident it can lock up any team it faces.

#2 – Allen County-Scottsville (12-12)

How They Can Win

Despite splitting the season series with Glasgow, the Lady Patriots have to be feeling confident about their chances to reach the district finals for the first time since 2016. Coach Greg Dunn’s squad closed the regular season with five wins in its final six games. Four players average in double figures, led by eighth-grader Avery Morris’ 14.5 points per game. Senior Jaylee Covington is averaging 10.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest. The balance on offense ensures that ACS will have multiple ways to score if one of its top scorers has an off night.

#3 – Glasgow (13-16)

How They Can Win

Glasgow will be hoping that the adage about the postseason being “A New Season” rings true after dropping nine of its final eleven games to end the regular season. The Scotties will likely go as far as their talented duo of senior Mia Cassady and junior Khloe Hale can take them. Cassady is one of the state’s top three-point shooters, knocking down nearly 80 so far this season. Hale is among the region leaders in rebounds at 9.1 per game. A win over ACS would give Glasgow its fifth district championship game in six seasons.

#4 – Warren East (7-21)

How They Can Win

Warren East hosts the 15th District Tournament in its inaugural season hoping it can upset the favorite and five-time defending champions. A young team with only three seniors on the roster, five players average at least five points per game. Sophomore guard Sam Carver leads the team in scoring at 6.2 points per game and is shooting nearly 76% from the free-throw line. Coach Jenny Neville and her club will be hoping for some postseason magic at home this week.

Prediction

Barren County is the favorite to win the 15th District Tournament and will be among the favorites to win the 4th Region Tournament next week at Diddle Arena should they qualify. Despite its lack of scoring firepower, the Trojanettes commitment to team defense, ability to put teams away, and timely free throw shooting (28th statewide in %) make them my pick to win a sixth-straight title. In the 2-3 matchup, the Lady Patriots are oozing with momentum and I predict it will carry on in a victory over the Lady Scotties. Allen County-Scottsville will be back in the region tournament for the first time since 2016.

Champion – Barren County

By Donnie Meador

The 26th Lady Invitational of the South—-presented by South Central Bank, Halton, Dollar General, CPC Commodities, and girls’ basketball Financial Services—will tip off Tuesday, December 27 at Allen County-Scottsville High School in Scottsville Kentucky. Start of play will mark the resumption of a prestigious Kentucky girls basketball tournament following a 14-year absence from the girls’ basketball landscape.

For over two decades, the LIS was an annual event featuring top teams and players from across the Commonwealth and even nation. However, in 2009, officials opted to discontinue the LIS as an girls-only 16-team tournament, opting for two eighth-team events featuring girls and boys. Last spring, Allen County-Scottsville coach Greg Dunn elected to resume the LIS in much the same format as in years past.

Championship – WKU

June 7 @ 7:00pm – Semifinal Winners

Cumberland County (18-11)

How They Can Win

One of the hottest teams in the field, the Lady Panthers enter the region tournament on a nine-game winning streak. Rian Craft’s club entered the 16th District Tournament as the 3-seed but won both games to win their first district championship since 2015. Carly Nettles has led the way for Cumberland County, batting .490 with 50 hits, 53 RBI, and 12 doubles. The path to a long tournament for the Lady Panthers will be centered in putting up runs. The squad scored at least seven runs in eight of their final nine games.

Player to Keep an Eye on

Erica Branham has had an outstanding season on the mound. The seventh grader is 8-0 with 49 strikeouts, an ERA of 0.90, and only six earned runs in 46.2 innings of work. Her ability to get hitters out in tight spots will be paramount for Cumberland to knock off Warren East.

Warren East (23-13)

How They Can Win

The two-time defending region champion will not fear any team, even after losing 11-1 to South Warren in the district championship game. Two seasons ago, the Lady Raiders lost the Lady Spartans, 12-2, in the district finale before flipping the script on their rivals in the region finale. This Warren East team is built upon a deep lineup and a stud on the mound. Lucy Patterson and Emma Young are batting .479 as Patterson is among the state leaders in total hits with 56. If the Lady Raiders can get to the final game on Monday, they will believe in their ability to pull off the upset.

Player to Keep an Eye on

It goes without saying how dominant Emma Markham has been on the mound for the Lady Raiders. The junior has pitched 171.2 innings, struck out 300 batters (with only 31 walks), amassed a record of 19-8, and an ERA of 1.30. When she’s on, hitters must beware.

Barren County (25-7)

How They Can Win

Barren County was downright dominant in the 15th District this year, going undefeated en route to a second-straight district title. The Trojanettes also went 17-4 against 4th Region opponents and put together two separate win streaks of at least eight games. Lara Simmons and Katie Murphy are having outstanding seasons on the diamond. Simmons is batting .443 with 51 hits, 32 hits, and 12 doubles. Murphy is hitting .432 with 48 hits, 51 runs, eight triples, and is 21-for-21 on stolen base attempts.

Photo provided by BCHS Softball

Player to Keep an Eye on

For as dominant as Emma Markham has been for Warren East, Lilie Broady has been neck-and-neck with her in nearly every pitching category. Broady leads the region in wins with 22 and is second in innings pitched with 169.1. The junior pitcher has allowed only 50 earned runs on the season, struck out 167 batters, and holds an ERA of 2.07.

Photo provided by BCHS Softball

Russellville (21-16)

How They Can Win

Russellville started the season 11-2 but lost five of their final six games, including the 13th District championship to Logan County in a shootout, 18-14. The Lady Panthers’ ability to make a deep run will be in their ability to put runs on the board. In their last four wins, they scored at least ten runs in every single game. Comparatively, RHS failed to score more than three runs in three of their last four losses.

Photo provided by RHS Softball

Players to Keep an Eye on

Sophomore Amiyah Collier has been a one-woman wrecking machine for the Lady Panthers this season. At the plate, she leads the team with 51 runs, 49 hits, 32 RBI, five triples, a .415 batting average, and a region-best 11 home runs. On the mound, she has 11 wins and struck out 133 batters in 155 innings over 20 starts with an ERA of 4.06.

Logan County (18-14)

How They Can Win

Logan County went a perfect 8-0 in district play this season and capped it off with its second-straight district title. Mark Wood’s club started out 4-6 but rallied to win five of its final seven games to enter the region tournament on a tear. The Lady Cougars can make a deep run with the likes of Kaylin Page and Emerson McKinnis doing damage at the plate. Page is batting .464 with 52 hits and 15 doubles, while McKinnis is batting .431 with 40 RBI and a whopping 10 home runs.

Players to Keep an Eye on

The pitching duo of Shayla Johnson and Shelby Greetings has pitched in nearly every game for the Lady Cougars. Johnson has seven wins, 60 strikeouts, and a 4.25 ERA in 85.2 innings pitched. Greetings is 8-4 with a 3.75 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 84 innings.

Allen County-Scottsville (21-12)

How They Can Win

Allen County-Scottsville started the season 9-3 but lost three of its final four games (five of six if you do not count the two ties at the Meade County Mighty May Matchup), including an 11-6 decision in the district title game to Barren County. Those struggles aside, the Lady Patriots have won of the state’s most prolific offenses with three players in the top 20 in hits and two in the top 11 in doubles. Furthermore, they are ranked in the top 25 as a team in batting average (.393), hits (369), and doubles (75). If the bats stay alive, ACS can go far.

Photo provided by Don Meador

Player to Keep an Eye on

It seems like a disservice to not mention Taylor Gregory or Bailey Ausbrooks when mentioning players to keep an eye on for ACS; however, Hadley Borders is who I will be watching at the region tournament. The seventh grader leads the team with a .513 batting average, 59 hits, and 50 runs. She also has recorded 17 doubles and stolen a team-best 19 bases.

Photo provided by Don Meador

South Warren (33-1)

How They Can Win

The Lady Spartans, ranked #1 in the state and top-20 nationally, are the heavy favorites to win their first region title since 2017. Kelly Reynolds’ club enters the field with sixteen-straight wins to their name. Although a record of 33-1 speaks for itself, South has not rolled over every team its faced. They have been challenged, with ten games being decided by two runs or less. The club is 9-1 in such games, meaning they won’t feel out of place should any of their region tournament games come down to the final inning. With eight players batting at least .333, the team has supreme confidence in its lineup from top to bottom.

Players to Keep an Eye on

With a deep roster like South Warren, it is easy to name any number of players that are having outstanding years. When watching the Lady Spartans, you are remiss to not mention the pitching/hitting efforts of Emily Reynolds and Selynna Metcalfe, as well as the tear that Caroline Pitcock has been on at the plate this season. Reynolds is 14-1 on the mound with 112 strikeouts and a 1.67 ERA to go along with a .418 average and 51 hits at the plate. Metcalfe is 10-0 on the mound with five saves and 55 strikeouts, as well as a 0.90 ERA. She has hit ten home runs, 12 doubles, and knocked in 39 runs. Meanwhile, Pitcock has belted out a region-best 60 hits to go with 40 RBI, 12 doubles, nine home runs, and a batting average of .531.

Clinton County (17-13)

How They Can Win

Despite going 0-6 in district play in the regular season, the Lady Bulldogs flipped the script and knocked off previously undefeated Metcalfe County to qualify for their first region tournament since 2014. Coach Bobby Evans’ club won five of its final seven games to end the season and will be looking to play spoiler against the state’s top team in South Warren. They feature the region’s best batting average at .401 (ranked 15th in the state) and are ranked fifth statewide in doubles with 80. The club’s 338 hits are also among the state’s best. Could they pull off the biggest upset of them all?

Photo taken by James Guffey

Player to Keep an Eye on

For the Lady Bulldogs to make some noise, they will need a big tournament from Ella Marlow. The sophomore is batting a team-best .473 and has 44 hits, 35 runs, 31 RBI, and 17 doubles. Marlow went 3-for-4 with a triple in Clinton’s upset win over Metcalfe.

Favorite

South Warren

The Lady Spartans are the favorite to win their first region championship since 2017. South Warren was 28-1 at the time of publication and had won eleven-straight games. Coach Kelly Reynolds’ club was ranked #1 in the state at the time of this writing, even making an appearance in various national polls. This club has all the tools to make a deep run through the 4th Region and state tournament. Emily Reynolds and Selynna Metcalfe have had outstanding seasons on the mound and at the plate.

Emily Reynolds

At the time of publication, Reynolds was 11-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 74.2 innings pitched with 87 strikeouts. Metcalfe was 7-0 with a 1.12 ERA and 46 strikeouts. At the plate, Reynolds was batting .412, while Metcalfe was hitting .404 with a team-leading 11 doubles and seven home runs. Caroline Pitcock was batting a whopping .559 with 52 hits, 34 RBI, and seven home runs. In 2017, the Lady Spartans finished third in the state tournament. The 2021 version can certainly make it that far and beyond should they qualify with a region title.

Selynna Metcalfe

Contenders

Greenwood

Greenwood has been ranked within the top 20 of the state rankings all season and are certainly a contender for the 4th Region title. The Lady Gators have played one of the state’s toughest schedules, picking up wins against some of the state’s elite like Ballard, Male, McCracken County, Central Hardin, and Christian County. Josi Morrison has been on fire at the plate, batting .341 with nine doubles, eight home runs, and 34 RBI. Allison Bush leads the team on the mound, racking up a record of 14-3 at the time of publication with 141 strikeouts in 99.2 innings pitched. Coach Taylor Proctor’s club split with Warren East in the regular season, trading 3-0 wins. It will likely come down to a Gator-Raider battle to see who qualifies for the region tournament.

Warren East

The two-time defending champion Warren East Lady Raiders started the season ranked among the state’s elite after reaching consecutive state championship games in 2018 and 2019. The squad started the season 12-4 but struggled in early May – losing five out of seven games. Emma Markham has been a strikeout machine, ranking in the state’s top six in both total Ks (251) and Ks/7 innings (12.76). Her earned run average is also one of the state’s best at 1.37. Emma Young is batting .481 with 37 hits, 24 RBI, and 11 doubles, while Lucy Patterson is batting .454 with a team-leading 44 hits to go with nine doubles and three triples. In 97 at-bats, Patterson has only struck out twice. As noted above, the Lady Raider’s postseason hopes will likely come down to a game in the district tournament against Greenwood. From there, this team can do some serious damage.

Sleepers

Barren County

Barren County last reached the region semifinals in 2017 after blanking Logan County, 3-0, before being ousted by Warren East. This Trojanette club is looking to win consecutive 15th District titles in at least the last 23 years (the earliest KHSAA provides historical data). They will have the ability to achieve that feat as the #1 seed in the district tournament. Coach Daryl Murphy’s club started the season 9-0 and put together a separate win streak of eight games that spanned late April into early May. The Trojanettes are incredibly balanced up and down their lineup with seven players logging 20 hits while batting over .300 at the time of publication. Lara Simmons leads the team at .429 with 36 hits, while Katie Murphy is batting .378 and leads the team in runs scored (37), triples (5), and is a perfect 15-for-15 on stolen bases. Lilie Broady has been the season’s ace with a 17-4 record, 1.97 ERA, and 135 strikeouts in 128 innings pitched. The Trojanettes are a sleeper to the crown and have a chance to make some noise at WKU.

Katie Murphy (batting) & Lara Simmons (fielding)

Allen County-Scottsville

The Lady Patriots are a sleeper to the 4th Region crown in large part due to their consistency at the plate. As a team, ACS is ranked statewide in batting average, hits, and doubles. Coach Brad Bonds’ club was in the top 15 in all three categories at the time of publication. They are led by Taylor Gregory, Hadley Borders, and Bailey Ausbrooks. The trio has combined for nearly 150 hits and 100 RBI. They are all three batting at least .484, led by Gregory’s .534 average. In doubles, Borders had 17, while Ausbrooks leads the team with six home runs. Gregory has been the team’s top pitcher as well, going 109.2 innings through the first 25 games with a 13-6 record and a 3.00 ERA. The Lady Patriots have already posted two five-game win streaks on the year. If they can get their bats going in the postseason, they can ride them as far as any team.

Russellville

Russellville has only made one region tournament appearance since 2006; however, the Lady Panthers have looked impressive in 2021, racking up 20 wins in their first 30 games. After starting the season 7-1 and 12-2, coach Ryan Davenport’s club began to turn some heads. Amiyah Collier leads the team at the plate and on the mound. The sophomore leads Russellville in hits, runs, RBI, triples, and home runs. She is also batting .371. On the mound she had pitched 111 innings through her first 24 games, striking out 117 with an ERA of 2.77. RHS has played well against some of the region’s elite but has struggled against district competition. Their chance at a deep run in the 4th Region Tournament will come down to a district semifinal game with Franklin-Simpson who has already beaten them twice this season.

Dark Horses

Logan County

Logan County’s record may be around .500, but the Lady Cougars definitely have enough pop to make a run at region. Coach Mark Wood’s club has played a tough schedule and has picked up wins over Greenwood and Russellville (twice). Logan County is first in the region with 24 home runs, one above Barren County’s 23. Emerson McKinnis leads the team with eight bombs, while Grace Mefford has knocked out six. Kaylin Page leads the team in runs, hits, doubles, and a batting average of .500 at the time of publication. In 2019, the Lady Cougars dispatched of Metcalfe County before nearly toppling South Warren in the semifinals. They will look to go deep again in 2021.

Metcalfe County

As the favorite to win the 16th District, Metcalfe County is also a dark horse to win the 4th Region championship. The Lady Hornets were one of three teams to go undefeated in district play this season along with South Warren and Logan County. Braelyn Davis has continued her hot streak at the plate, batting .500 with 38 hits and 13 doubles in the regular season. Bailee Garrett batted .400 with 32 RBI, while pitching over 110 innings and going 11-5 with a .406 ERA. The Lady Hornets last reached the region semifinals in 2011.

Russell County

Russell County started the season 8-1 behind the timely hitting of Sophie Shearer and Emma Popplewell among others. Shearer is batting .500 while leading the team in hits (33) and RBI (29). Popplewell is nearly batting .400 and has knocked in 25 runs and scored 20 of her own. The Lady Lakers will look to recreate the magic of 2015 when they reached the region semifinals.

Bowling Green

Bowling Green started the season 1-11 and seemed destined for a losing season; but then something changed. The Lady Purples caught fire, winning ten of their next eleven games, including wins over Warren East, Apollo, and Logan County. Kendle White leads the team in runs, hits, RBI, doubles, and triples. Tanaya Bailey leads the team in batting average at .476. It would seemingly take a herculean effort over South Warren to reach the region tournament, but if they did, anything’s possible. The Lady Purples are looking for their first region appearance since 2013 (when they reached the championship game).

Franklin-Simpson

Franklin-Simpson lost five of its first seven games but steadied the ship with wins over Calloway County, Great Crossing, Bowling Green, and Russellville (twice). Kaeleigh Tuck has been the leader of the offense, batting .427 with 44 hits, 30 RBI, and 14 doubles at the time of publication. Allie Utley has stolen 22 bases on the year, while Sherrekia Kitchens has 26 runs, 27 RBI, and four home runs. The Lady Wildcats’ season will come down to a district semifinal showdown with Russellville, where Franklin will look to make its eleventh-straight region tournament appearance.
