Boys Basketball

By Perry Swack

A top ten poll projecting next season might seem like a pointless endeavor. For example, a season ago, Bowling Green, Warren Central, and Glasgow were the only teams we ranked in the Never Too Early poll to make the 4th Region Tournament this past March. With this idea in mind, our Never Too Early ST Power Rankings are simply for enjoyment as fans cope with the realization that basketball season has come to an end. Take a look at our rankings and see who you think should be ranked higher!

*Team rosters may change over time but this is how they project at the end of the 2023-24 season. Players listed as their 2024-25 class.

School 2023-24 Record

Bowling Green 29-6

Returning: Deuce Bailey (Sr), Braylon Banks (Sr), Jace Wardlow (Sr), Luke Idlett (Sr), Kadyn Carpenter (Sr), Trevy Barber (Jr)

Departing: Mason Ritter, MJ Wardlow, DeMarr Starks, Ishmael Holcomb

The Purples will lose the likes of Mason Ritter and MJ Wardlow, but don’t expect Bowling Green to go anywhere. Returning Deuce Bailey (12.8 points per game), Braylon Banks (8.4 PPG), and Jace Wardlow (7.9 PPG, 3.7 RPG) make it easy to pencil in BG as early region favorites in 2025. Senior sharpshooter Luke Idlett and junior Trevy Barber played big minutes in ‘24 and will be called upon to assume larger roles moving forward. D.G. Sherrill’s club has been as consistent as any in the 4th Region and will look to play in a twelfth-straight region championship game next March.

Warren East 19-11

Returning: Brenden Bratcher (Sr), Jordan Hogue (Sr), Kyler Pedigo (Jr), Kaleb Prince (Jr), Dane Parsley (Sr)

Departing: Jari Barber, Michael Clark, Cayson Riggs, Sean Rigsby

The Raiders will return six of their top seven scorers next season, none more important than All-Region pick Kaleb Prince. The incoming junior averaged 15.2 PPG on 46% shooting and was the team’s second-leading rebounder. All-District performer Brenden Bratcher will also return after making 66 three-pointers in 23-24. Kyle Benge’s team will look to get back to the region tournament after being upset in the district semifinals this past season.

Glasgow 11-17

Returning: Jerrick Martin (Jr), Jeremiah Driver (Sr), Josiah Driver (Sr), Quinn Nunley (Sr), Landon Minton (Jr), Jaylen Bradley (So)

Departing: JC Walbert, David Dale, Javan Garmon

After losing a heartbreaker in the 2023 district semifinals, the Scotties avenged their last-second loss with a game-winner of their own over Warren East to qualify for the 4th Region Tournament. The Scotties won the 15th District for the first time since 2019 and then secured their first region victory since 2012. Coach William Buford’s club is expected to return six of seven rotation players next season, led by junior Jerrick Martin. The springy forward averaged 11.7 points and 7.0 rebounds as a sophomore. Seniors Jeremiah and Josiah Driver also return after averaging a combined 15 points for the Scotties.

Barren County 20-13

Returning: Tate Spillman (Sr), Brey Bewley (Sr), Waylon Clemmons (Sr), Jackson Reece (Sr), Kade Hardy (Jr), Gavin Nunn (Jr)

Departing: Mason Bunch, William Compton, Graham Hall, Carter Browning, Cash Moore

Barren County has been the most consistent team in the 15th District over the course of the last half-decade, qualifying for every region tournament since 2020. A talented roster will give Coach Warren Cunningham and his staff a great opportunity to qualify for a sixth-straight year. Cunningham will enter his 17th year at the helm with two All-District performers in the lineup. Tate Spillman (14.5 PPG) and Brey Bewley (9.3 PPG, 4.3 RPG) will be seniors as the Trojans look to navigate a tough 15th District in 2025.

Warren Central 17-12

Returning: Jarek Kirk (Sr), Dominique Anthony (Jr), Johan Pratt (Jr), Armani Byrd (So)

Departing: Kade Unseld, Drevin Bratton, Elijah Starks, Cadin Hammer, Elijah Howard, Braylon Boards, Muhammad Ali

A year ago Warren Central lost six of its top seven rotation players to graduation after winning the state championship. The same thing is happening again this offseason, with six, rotation seniors set to graduate. Of the returning players, Jarek Kirk (4.6 PPG) and Dominique Anthony (2.0 PPG) are the only two who played in both the region title game and state tournament this past season. For more than 20 years now, Warren Central has had new players step up each season. With talented underclassmen waiting in the wings, Coach William Unseld and his staff await the next group of outstanding players.

South Warren 14-11

Returning: Griffin Rardin (Sr), Bryce Button (Sr), Jace Jarvis (Sr), Thad Hall (Sr), Cameron Bell (Sr), Colton Veltkamp (Sr), Owen Shively (Jr), Camden Page (So)

Departing: DeShawn Bridges, Drew Hudson, Kye Rich

The Spartans will deeply miss All-Region standout Drew Hudson; however, coach Carlos Quarles’ club will return eight of their top nine scorers from this season. Griffin Rardin had a breakout junior year, averaging 14.4 points per game with 59 three-pointers. The sharpshooter shot better than 50% from beyond the arc and grabbed four rebounds per contest. Bryce Button averaged 11.7 PPG and 4.2 RPG to help pace the Spartans in the paint. A strong senior class will have the opportunity to help South qualify for its first-ever 4th Region Tournament berth.

Cumberland County 18-14

Returning: Zachery Harwood (Sr), Byren Crawley (Sr), Burk Sells (Sr), Deven Norris (Sr), Braden Perdue (Jr), Aiden Branham (Jr), Gavin Craft (So),

Departing: Lance Willen, Damian Kowalewski

Cumberland County will enter the 2024-25 campaign favored to win the 16th District as they return their top seven scorers from their district-title winning team of this season. It all begins with All-Region product Zachery Harwood. The forward averaged 15.9 points and 11.9 rebounds per game on 55% shooting. The trio of Byren Crawley (9.5 PPG), Burk Sells (8.1 PPG, 48 made threes), and Braden Perdue (7.9 PPG) will round out a solid quartet ready to lead the Panthers as they seek to defend their first 16th District championship since 2009.

Metcalfe County 12-22

Returning: Cade Button (Jr), Hudson Jessie (Sr), Maddux Garrett (Jr), Kruz Tucker (Jr), Ben Shirley (Sr), Collin Shive (Sr), Byron Kirkland-Lundy (Sr)

Departing: Cabot Boling, Colton Huffman

The Hornets took their lumps throughout the regular season, but when the lights shone brightest they delivered. 16th District Player of the Year Cade Button (24.4 PPG) and upcoming senior Hudson Jessie (13.9 PPG, 8.2 RPG) will return for another crack at a deep postseason run. In three postseason games this season, the duo scored 129 of Metcalfe’s 182 points, or 71% of the total output. Maddux Garrett (7.5 PPG) and Kruz Tucker (7.0 PPG) round out a talented junior class for 2025.

Franklin-Simpson 14-13

Returning: Jakai Partinger (Jr), Kamryn Ray (Sr), Brody McAlister (So), Cole Sharer (Jr), Malik Butler (Jr)

Departing: OJ Gamble, Gavin Dickerson, Mathias Dickerson

Franklin-Simpson will lose the trio of OJ Gamble and Gavin and Mathias Dickerson; however, the cupboard will not be bare for coach Dee Spencer as he enters his thirteenth season next winter. Senior Kamryn Ray will return after averaging 8.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game this past season, as will junior Jakai Partinger (8.6 PPG, 3.5 RPG). The Wildcats failed to make the 4th Region Tournament for the first time since 2015. I believe a new streak of appearances will begin again in 2025.

Monroe County 15-14

Returning: Brison Nuckols (Jr), Branson Williams (Jr), Caden Geralds (Jr), Wade Carnahan (Sr), Brayden Baxter (Jr), Reece Bartley (So)

Departing: Austen Arnett, Jameson Petett

After being named to the ST All-Freshman Team in 2023, Brison Nuckols and Branson Williams made the jump as sophomores to become major contributors for the Falcons. Nuckols was Monroe’s second-leading scorer at 16.2 points per game, while WIlliams averaged a double-double with 11.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per contest. Both players should return for their junior season next winter and will be paired with four other members of coach Ashley Geralds’s rotation. The 16th District will be competitive again, but I expect the Falcons to be in the thick of the race.

District Tournament Brackets are Nearly Set but coin flips and pill bottles may help decide the seeding for the events

By Perry Swack

With the final weekend of regular-season district play upon us, teams across the 4th Region are looking to see what they must do to improve their district tournament seeding. With most teams having one more district game to play, tie-breaking procedures are assured of coming into play. The KHSAA allows each district to utilize its own tie-breaking procedure from RPI to coin flips to pill-bottle drawings. Below we will look at each district in the 4th Region and determine what’s left to play for as teams take to the hardwood against their district rivals one more time before the postseason begins in two weeks.

13th District Standings

Franklin-Simpson 5-0

Logan County 3-2

Todd County Central 2-3

Russellville 0-5

Remaining Games

Friday, February 9 @ 7:30 PM – Todd County Central @ Russellville

Friday, February 9 @ 7:30 PM – Franklin-Simpson @ Logan County

Russellville will host the 13th District Tournament at the end of the month. The matchups for the event are set as Franklin-Simpson has clinched the 1-seed and will play host (and 4-seed) Russellville regardless of the results this weekend. The 2-3 matchup is also set as Logan County and Todd County Central will face off in this game; however, the seeding is not completely finalized. If Logan County defeats Franklin-Simpson on Friday, the Cougars will clinch the 2-seed. If Todd County Central loses to Russellville, Logan County will clinch the 2-seed regardless of its result with Franklin-Simpson.

Should Logan County lose and Todd County Central win, both the Cougars and Rebels will be 3-3 in district play. Things will then get interesting. Let’s look at the 13th District tie-breaking procedures to determine who will get the 2-seed.

Tie-Breaker

Logan County & Todd County Central

#1 Head-to-Head

Split Season Series

#2 Points allowed against other team

Two-Game Aggregate
LC – 136
TCC – 130

Logan allowed six less points than Todd and therefore would receive the 2-seed in the event of a tie.

14th District Standings

Bowling Green 5-0

Warren Central 4-1

South Warren 1-4

Greenwood 0-5

Remaining Games

Friday, February 9 @ 7:30 PM – Warren Central @ Bowling Green

Friday, February 9 @ 7:30 PM – Greenwood @ South Warren

In the years of a coin flip tiebreak, everything would seemingly be on the line for the 14th District this weekend. Bowling Green and Warren Central will face off with the Purples holding a one-game lead on the Dragons, while across town the Spartans and Gators are within one game of each other with a head-to-head on the schedule. However, the 14th District recently changed its tie-breaking procedures to incorporate the KHSAA ratings percentage index (RPI) after head-to-head meetings. This will create a tall task for Warren Central and Greenwood to overcome BG or SW, should they finish the district slate tied with either school.

If Warren Central defeats Bowling Green and both are tied at 5-1 in district play, the tie-breaking procedure determines the 1-seed by RPI on the day after the final district game is played (February 10). The Purples currently have an RPI of .665, the Dragons are at .560. A Bowling Green loss would still likely leave them as the higher-rated team. It’s a similar situation for Greenwood and South Warren. A Gator victory would leave the teams tied at 1-5, but the Spartans’ RPI is .529 compared to GHS’ .489 entering Friday’s game. It’s possible that Greenwood could supplant South, but it seems like the Gators would still be in fourth on Saturday morning.

The four teams will decide who is district champion at the end of the month at South Warren.

Projected Seeding for 14th District Tournament

15th District Standings

Barren County 4-2

Warren East 4-2

Glasgow 2-3

Allen County-Scottsville 1-4

Remaining Game

Friday, February 9 @ 7:30 PM – Allen County-Scottsville @ Glasgow

Although Barren County and Warren East are tied atop the 15th District standings, the Trojans have already clinched the 1-seed for the tournament due to its 2-0 head-to-head record against the Raiders. The only possibility for excitement will be in the Glasgow-Allen County game scheduled for Friday evening. A Scottie victory would ensure it plays as the 3-seed; however, a Patriot win would make things interesting. Read below to see how things would shake out if ACS defeats Glasgow.

Tie-Breaker

Glasgow & ACS (if ACS wins on 2/9)

#1 Head-to-Head

Split Season Series

#2 Team with best record against highest other seed in ascending order

Records against #2 Warren East
Glasgow 0-2
ACS 0-2
Records against #1 Barren County
Glasgow 1-1
ACS 1-1

#3 Draw from pill bottle beginning with district host and follow district host rotation

ACS is hosting the 2024 Tournament and would draw first from the pill bottle

If ACS finds a way to defeat the Scotties, we would get one of the most unusual tie-breaking procedures across the state: a pill bottle drawing to determine district seeding.

Projected Seeding for 15th District Tournament

Barren County

Warren East

Glasgow

Allen County-Scottsville

16th District Standings

Russell County 6-1

Cumberland County 4-2

Clinton County 4-2

Metcalfe County 2-6

Monroe County 1-6

Remaining Games

Thursday, February 8 @ 7:30 PM – Monroe County @ Cumberland County

Sunday, February 11 @ 4:00 PM – Clinton County @ Cumberland County

Wednesday, February 14 @ 7:30 PM – Russell County @ Clinton County

In the region’s only five-team district, there is a lot to be decided as four of the five teams take to the court against one another over the next week. We will show you the Tie-Breaking Procedures utilized by the 16th District before we tell you how it may play out.

Tie-Breaker (Two Teams)

Tie-Breaker (Three Teams)

#1 Head-to-Head

#1 Head-to-Head

#2 Coin Flip between two teams

#2 Coin Flip if down to teams

#3 If still three teams are tied, draw based on the district tournament host rotation with host drawing first

Russell County has the clear edge for the district’s 1-seed as if they win, they clinch. However, should they lose to Clinton County on Valentine’s Day, it could open Pandora’s box. If Clinton County defeats Cumberland County and Russell County to finish tied 6-2 with RC, it would go to a coin flip (as teams would split season series). Since Cumberland County and Clinton County play one another on Sunday, we will avoid a three-team tie as either the Panthers or Bulldogs will have three district losses. If Cumberland County finishes 6-2 and are tied with Russell County, the Lakers would clinch the #1 seed due to their season sweep over the Panthers.

While Monroe County and Metcalfe County are locked into the 4-5 game regardless of the week’s results, the Falcons can earn the 4-seed with a win over Cumberland County on Thursday coupled with a coin flip victory over the Hornets (due to the split season series). Russell County will host the 16th District Tournament at the end of the month.

Outlook: Warren Central saw its five-game win streak snapped at home last Tuesday in a loss to Bowling Green; however, the Dragons will be encouraged after leading for many portions of the game and even outrebounding the Purples, 33-22. WC went on to fly by Greenwood, 76-45, and remain in second place in the 14th District standings.

Upcoming Games: at Christian County (Monday), South Warren (Friday), Elizabethtown (Saturday)

Outlook: Barren opened the week with two victories before fading with two losses to Glasgow and Monroe County. The Trojans still sit atop the 15th District standings at 4-1. BC is making nearly ten three-pointers per game, led by William Compton’s 50 and Tate Spillman’s 41 three-pointers on the season.

Four players hit double figures, led by Trace Stringer and Owen Loy’s 16 points. The Lakers also went 17-for-21 from the charity stripe to ensure the victory. Two more district opponents await Russell County this week as they invite Metcalfe County and Monroe County to Russell Springs.

Upcoming Games: Metcalfe County (Tuesday), Monroe County (Friday)

Franklin-Simpson 10-7 (9)

Outlook: Franklin-Simpson went nearly two weeks without a game; however, upon its return to the hardwood, the Wildcats looked deadly. Dee Spencer’s club won all three of its games last week by an average of 30.3 points per victory. Senior guard Gavin Dickerson led the team in scoring at 18.3 points per game over the course of the three wins.

Upcoming Games: Logan County (Monday), at Butler County (Tuesday), Russellville (Friday)

South Warren 8-8 (6)

Outlook: South Warren split its district games last week, defeating Greenwood (71-62) in overtime before falling to Bowling Green (64-38). Griffin Rardin (18 points) and Drew Hudson (17 points) each knocked down four three-pointers as the Spartans picked up their first district victory of the season. South hosts Logan County on Tuesday evening, allowing the two clubs to see how they fare against teams outside of their respective districts.

Outlook: Clinton County won its opening round game of the All-A State Tournament over Raceland, but the Bulldogs fell to Murray in the quarterfinals. Clinton will now face Monroe County for a third time this season, as the club looks to keep its hopes for the district’s #1 seed alive for the 16th District Tournament at the end of February. Nick Irwin’s club defeated the Falcons in district play (61-55) and in the region All “A” Classic (52-49).

Upcoming Games: at Monroe County (Tuesday), at Glasgow (Thursday), Hopkins County Central (Saturday)

Monroe County 12-8 (8)

Outlook: Monroe County picked up an impressive win over Barren County in double overtime last week. The Falcons now turn their attention to 16th District play, where they currently sit at 1-4 with three games remaining. Two of those three will be this week as the club invites Clinton County to Tompkinsville on Tuesday before traveling to district leader Russell County on Friday evening.

Logan County 10-8 (10)

Outlook: Logan County remains in the top ten after a district victory over Russellville on Friday evening. Samson Hightower helped the Cougars remain undefeated in district play with 19 points in the win, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Four games are on tap for Josh Frick’s club this week, including a Monday night matchup with Franklin-Simpson. Both teams are undefeated in district play.

Upcoming Games: at Franklin-Simpson (Monday), at South Warren (Tuesday), at Todd County Central (Friday), Allen County-Scottsville (Saturday)

Class 5A, 6A Midseason Check-In

By Perry Swack

Midway through the high school football regular season, it seems fitting to pause and assess how area teams are doing on the gridiron. Who’s playing well? Who’s got their best football ahead? Below are our midseason check-ins on the five area teams in Class 5A and 6A.

5A

Bowling Green (3-2)

Best Win to Date: 42-28 at Owensboro

The Purples took two, uncharacteristic losses in in the season’s opening three weeks; however, coach Mark Spader hasn’t shied from playing some of the state’s top teams regardless of class. BG fell by four to Lexington Christian in the opener and by three to Bryan Station two weeks later. LCA has the second-highest RPI in Class 2A, while Station has the highest RPI in Class 6A.

BG’s Deuce Bailey

On the field the Purples have found the end zone with ease, averaging 46.2 points per game. Junior quarterback Deuce Bailey is ranked within the top 5 statewide in pass yards (1566), pass yards per game (313), passing touchdowns (17), and completion percentage (71.7). In Class 5A, he’s ranked first or second in each of those categories. In a 42-28 win at Owensboro, Bailey completed 20-of-28 passes for 321 yards and five touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Trevy Barber has been Bailey’s top target with 28 receptions for nearly 500 yards and eight scores.

Circle the Date: October 13 @ South Warren

Purples defeated the Spartans twice in 2022 to retake the series lead, 6-5. This game may very well decide the regular season district championship.

Greenwood (4-1)

Best Win to Date: 21-13 at Logan County

For a fifth-straight season, Greenwood has won at least four of its first five games. The Gators hope to continue their hot start this weekend as they welcome South Warren to The Swamp for a 7:00 showdown. Coach William Howard’s club is superb on both sides of the ball, ranking tenth or better in both scoring offense (32.8 points per game) and scoring defense (16.4 points allowed per game). Senior running back Tel Tel Long leads the rushing attack with 435 yards and six touchdowns on the season.

Greenwood’s Tel Tel Long

The defense has been lights out, allowing no more than 14 points in four of the team’s first five games. The Gators are ranked among the state leaders in rushing and passing defense as opponents are only gaining around 50 yards per game on the ground against GHS. Senior linebacker Gray Price leads the unit with 24 solo tackles, 47 total tackles, five for loss, and three fumble recoveries.

Circle the Date: October 13 vs. Franklin-Simpson

The Gators have won the last two in the series and will look to make it three in a row when they host Franklin-Simpson on October 13. The Wildcats are 5-0 at time of publication and amongst the top teams in Class 4A.

South Warren (4-1)

Best Win to Date: 46-28 at Southwestern

After a state title in 2021, the Spartans took a small step back in 2022 with a 6-6 record. The 2023 iteration of coach Brandon Smith’s program seems to be back on track with those great South Warren teams of recent memory. South won its first four games by double digits before dropping a 38-35 thriller at Manual in Louisville.

Quarterback Bryce Button picked up where he left off in 2022 and then some, averaging 317 passing yards per game with 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions. His passing statistics ranks him at the top of 5A and amidst the top ten statewide. Button has thrown for three TDs in four of five games, including a five-touchdown, zero-interception performance in the Spartans’ home opener against Henderson County.

Boasting one of the state’s stiffest defenses, South’s Colton Veltkamp (five sacks) and Ehtan Reynolds (four sacks) lead a unit with six players who have at least two sacks on the season.

Circle the Date: October 13 vs. Bowling Green

The Spartans dropped both matchups to the Purples in 2022 and will be looking to avenge those in 2023. Neither program has ever won three-straight in the series.

6A

Barren County (3-2)

Best Win to Date: 7-6 vs. Warren East

2. 3. 4. The Barren County Trojans have not won more than four games since the 2019 season when they went 6-5. Starting the season 3-0 has revitalized the program under third-year head coach Tommy Muse. Running back Tate Spillman’s 295 rushing yards and nine touchdowns ranks him among the top rushers in Class 6A. Senior Austin Sewell is also having a solid season on the ground with 57 rushes for 217 yards and four scores.

Defensively, the Trojans are led by defensive end Jonathan Wilson and linebacker Waylon Clemmons. The pair have combined for more than 50 solo tackles and nearly 70 total tackles. Wilson leads the team with four sacks and Clemmons has tallied three. A 36-35 double overtime loss at crosstown rival Glasgow would devastate most programs; however, Barren County should find some momentum from its improvement. The Scotties defeated the Trojans by 19 and 37 in each of the past two seasons. With a full, district slate ahead, BC has a chance to make some noise in 2023.

Circle the Date: October 27 @ Allen County-Scottsville

Area rivals in different classes hit the gridiron for their yearly matchup. The Patriots eked out an 18-14 win in 2022. What will the 2023 game have in store for the fans?

Warren Central (1-4)

Best Win to Date: 40-26 vs. Butler County

Warren Central kicks off its introduction into Class 6A at the end of the month when it welcomes Central Hardin for a September 29 matchup. The Dragons have had spells of explosiveness on both sides of the ball and are led by Devontre Patterson on offense. The senior has logged 40 rushes for 266 yards and three scores, while catching seven passes for 193 yards and a touchdown.

Senior linebacker Yzir Gray leads the team on defense with 27 solo tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks, and a fumble recovery. Patterson is second on the team with 17 solo tackles and 21 total tackles. After going 5-5 in the 2022 regular season, expectations were high around the Dragon program coming into 2023. Despite a 1-4 start, Central still has the tools to make some noise in the second half of the season. Third-year coach Mark Nelson will have his program ready to compete.

Circle the Date: September 22 vs. Daviess County

Although not a district game, the Dragons will get their first taste of 6A action when the Panthers visit this Friday. A win would propel Central into its district slate with momentum.

Coach Luis Cano’s squad are expected to return some of its strongest contributors from 2022, including leading scorer Misael Giron. The incoming senior scored 33 goals and tallied 15 assists as a junior. Goalkeeper Stevan Rodriguez helped anchor a stout defense as the Raiders posted seven shutouts on the season. After losing only four seniors from the ‘22 roster, Warren East will be primed to make more noise across the 15th District and 4th Region.

Watch Out For

Senior David Alfaro. As a junior, Alfaro scored six times and assisted on four other goals as the Raiders had a banner season on the pitch.

Circle the Date

September 21 – Warren East travels to Greenwood, who eliminated the Raiders from the 4th Region Tournament in 2022.

Glasgow Scotties

2022 Record: 6-14

15th District Runner-Up

Coaches: Ken and Laura Mahung, 10th Season

Glasgow may have seen its run of eight-consecutive district titles come to an end in 2022; however, the Scotties qualified for an eleventh-straight 4th Region Tournament. Improvement was the name of the game for coaches Ken and Laura Mahung. GHS went 0-4 against Barren County and Warren East in the regular season but defeated Barren in the district tournament and nearly toppled East before falling in penalties. Senior Nick Bower returns to the lineup after scoring six goals and assisting on six more a season ago. Goalkeeper Richard Crowe will be expected to get the nod in goal, after making eight saves in a 2-0 loss to Franklin-Simpson in the 4th Region Tournament.

Watch Out For

Junior Darwin Hernandez who tallied five assists a season ago. Jared Malagon scored four goals as a freshman and will play a larger role in ‘23.

Circle the Date

August 17 — Glasgow travels to Warren East for a rematch of last season’s district championship game

Barren County Trojans

2022 Record: 12-8

Coach: Bobbie Nyekan, 11th Season (1st since 2014)

After an eight-season tenure for coach Joe Mercer, former head man Bobbie Nyekan (2005-14) returns to the Barren County dugout. In his first run with the program, the Trojans went to five-straight 4th Region Tournaments and won two district titles in 2012 and 2013. The task will be tall as Barren County graduated one of its most prolific scorers in program history, Micah Wilson, who bagged 40 goals in 2022. Alan Edberg is the team’s top returning scorer after scoring seven goals and handing out six assists a season ago. Nyekan will be looking for players to fill in the gaps left by a talented senior class

Watch Out For

The Trojans’ experienced back line which featured Colton Boone, John Edberg, Osmar Casas, and Logan Gerber a season ago. The quartet combined to play in nearly every game and all return for the ‘23 campaign.

Circle the Date

August 24 – The Trojans travel to Warren East for an early-season district showdown that will show both teams exactly where they stand two weeks into the 2023 season.

Allen County-Scottsville Patriots

2022 Record: 4-16

Coach: Josue Ramirez, 4th Season

There is much room for optimism among the Allen County-Scottsville boys’ soccer program as the team has improved its win totals in each of its first three seasons as a program. After debuting in 2020 with zero wins, the Patriots won once in 2021, and four times in 2022. Although the program’s all-time leading scorer Aaron Shain (29 goals) has graduated, coach Josue Ramirez returns talent that he hopes will allow his team to continue its improvement. Blade Workman will feature in the ACS lineup after scoring 12 goals and assisting on six more in 2022. Goalkeeper Ashtyn Ballinger also returns after making an astounding 268 saves a season ago.

Watch Out For

Junior Sammy Jines. Jines scored four goals in 2022, while leading the team with eight assists. His connection with Workman and others will be key for success on the pitch in 2023.

Circle the Date

August 10 – Allen County-Scottsville opens the season with Logan County in the Kentucky 2A Tournament. The two clubs split in 2022 and this early-season matchup is a major opportunity for the Patriots to play well as the ‘23 season kicks off.

2018 – Barren County over Monroe County

2017 – Barren County over Glasgow

Standings

Warren East 5-1

Glasgow 4-2

Barren County 2-4

Allen County-Scottsville 1-5

Schedule

May 15 @ 6:00pm – #1 Warren East vs. #4 Allen County-Scottsville

May 16 @ 6:00pm – #2 Glasgow vs. #3 Barren County

May 17 @ 6:00pm – Championship Game

Prediction

Warren East enters the 2023 postseason hungry to win its first region championship since 2011. The Raiders reached the region final in 2022 and are favored to reach the finale again this spring. However, the first tournament on the schedule will be the 15th District event. Powered by Maddox Tarrence and his .443 average, East is also favored to win the district title in its inaugural season after moving from the 14th. Tray Price (5 HR) and Chase Carver (4 HR) are a threat to go yard every at-bat, while Carver leads the team on the mound with 48 strikeouts (at the time of publication).

The two-time defending district champions will be hungry to make it three in a row as the only 15th district team that defeated Warren East in the regular season. Glasgow’s ace, Brayden Emmitt, was 6-2 with 45 strikeouts and a 1.90 ERA when this preview was published. The senior pitched a complete game with zero earned runs in the Scotties’ 3-1 win over East in late April. Weston Carroll is batting .383 with 32 runs batted in to lead GHS at the plate.

After splitting the season series with Glasgow, Barren County will be looking to spoil the Scotties’ chances at another district title. Sutton Hyde leads the team in hits, RBI, doubles, and home runs, along with a .361 batting average. Joey Meyers is 3-2 on the mound with a team-best 31 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA.

Allen County-Scottsville’s Dusty Hayes is batting .333 with a team-leading 13 hits. Three Patriot pitchers have sub-3.50 ERAs, led by Eddy Chavez with a 2.80 ERA and only 12 earned runs on the season.

Isaiah Andrew, Warren East Senior

Named the Sporting Times’ 15th District Player of the Year, Andrews led the Raiders to their first district championship since 1989. The senior averaged a region-best 23.4 points per game on 52% shooting and grabbed 8.3 rebounds per contest. After helping Warren East qualify for its first 4th Region Tournament berth since 1997, Andrews made a game-clinching block in the district championship as the Raiders knocked off Barren County.

Jari Barber, Warren East Junior

Barber was a major reason why Warren East Basketball made a deep postseason run in both the district and region tournaments. Averaging 7.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, the junior center had 11 big points in the Raiders district semifinal victory over Glasgow that helped the program qualify for the region tournament for the first time in 26 years.

Eli Brooks, Barren County Senior

Eli Brooks made one of the biggest leaps in scoring average throughout the state of Kentucky from one season to the next. As a junior, Brooks averaged six points per game. This season, as a senior, he poured in 20 points per game – a 14 PPG increase. Brooks also shot 51% from the field and grabbed 7.8 rebounds per game as the Trojans reached the 4th Region semifinals for a third-straight season.

Jordan Turner, Allen County-Scottsville Senior

Mia Cassady, Glasgow Senior

Mia Cassady helped the Lady Scotties back to the 4th Region Tournament for a fifth time in six seasons. The senior averaged 12.2 points and 3.6 rebounds. Cassady made 82 three-pointers and shot 33% from beyond the arc. In the district semifinals, Cassady scored a team-high 14 points (with four three-pointers) as the Lady Scotties clinched their berth in the region tournament with a 53-51 win over Allen County-Scottsville.

Jaylee Covington, Allen County-Scottsville Senior

At times this season, Allen County-Scottsville seemed destined for its first appearance in the 4th Region Tournament since 2016. A big part of the team’s success was senior Jaylee Covington. The forward averaged 10.3 points and a district-leading 10.6 rebounds per game. In her final high school game, Covington grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds as the Lady Patriots fell just short of the district championship game.

Khloe Hale, Glasgow Junior

Khloe Hale finished second in the 15th District in rebounding at 8.8 rebounds per game. The junior also added 7.1 points for the Lady Scotties. A double-double threat every night, Hale helped Glasgow to a 9-3 start on the season and the 15th District championship game.

Glasgow’s Khloe Hale (22)

Avery Morris, Allen County-Scottsville Eighth Grader

Morris led the Lady Patriots in scoring at 14.6 points per game. The eighth-grader shot 47% from the field, best on the team. Morris hit 96-of-126 free throws on the season and scored a game-high 18 points in the district semifinal loss to Glasgow. With two varsity seasons under her belt, Morris will be a dangerous threat for 15th District opponents for the next four years.

Katie Murphy, Barren County Junior

Katie Murphy features on the 15th District All-Hoops Team again after another strong season on the hardwood for the Trojanettes. The junior averaged six points and five rebounds, while often taking on the toughest assignment on defense each night. Murphy also hit 32 three-pointers, second on Barren County.

Outlook: Bowling Green went 3-0 this past week, including a pair of thirteen-point wins over Greenwood and McCracken County. A date with South Warren looms on Friday night – the Purples edged the Spartans, 55-50, on January 6. A win will keep Bowling Green alive in the hunt for the district’s #1 seed.

Week 9 Games: at Ohio County (Monday), South Warren (Friday)

Outlook: All four of South Warren’s losses this season are to teams ranked inside the state’s top 11 teams as far as RPI rankings go. The Spartans lost twice this past week to the state’s #1 team, Warren Central. Coach Carlos Quarles’ club will look to right the ship in Week 9 with three games against 4th Region opponents.

Outlook: Franklin-Simpson picked up two double-digit wins over Greenwood (61-51) and Logan County (70-36) in Week 8. The Wildcats travel to Todd County Central this Friday for a rematch with the Rebels after eking out a 46-45 win on January 6.
