15th and 16th District Baseball Check-In

By Perry Swack

With district play heating up, we swing around the 4th Region and take a look at each baseball district and where it stands after the first round of games last week. Districts have adopted a home-and-home round robin schedule for the regular season. Most inter-district affairs are played on consecutive weeknights with each team hosting. A weekly schedule is listed below, in addition to the district standings. Today we look at the 15th and 16th District.

16th District Standings

Barren County 4-0

Warren East 2-2

Glasgow 2-2

Allen County-Scottsville 0-4

Upcoming Schedule

April 29 at 5:30 – Barren County @ Glasgow

April 29 at 5:30 – Allen County-Scottsville @ Warren East

April 30 at 5:30 – Glasgow @ Barren County

April 30 at 5:30 – Warren East @ Allen County-Scottsville

Overview

Barren County sits atop the 15th District after sweeping Warren East and Allen County-Scottsville in consecutive weeks. Three players are batting above .400, led by Jordan Harris (.452), Sutton Hyde (.417), and JP Hyde (.414). The freshman Harris leads the Trojans with 28 hits and 19 RBI. Junior Joey Meyers is 5-0 on the mound with a 2.18 ERA and 32 strikeouts on the season. The righty threw a complete game in the opening victory over the Patriots, striking out seven and only allowing one run.

As for Allen County-Scottsville, Brantly Bray’s club is led by junior Eli Stamper. The multi-sport athlete leads the Patriots in batting average (.364) and hits (12). Although ACS utilizes an array of pitchers, junior Jay Desman has only allowed five runs in four appearances and currently holds a team-best 2.76 ERA with 16 strikeouts and only four walks.

After entering the 15th District a season ago, the Raiders of Warren East are looking to advance to the 4th Region Tournament for a fourth-straight year. Senior Ayden Barrick has led the team in batting average at .391, hits with 25, RBI with 16, and home runs with three. However, Barrick has missed the last week of games for the Raiders. In his absence, players like Maddox Tarrence and Kavien Hinton have kept pace. Tarrence leads the team with 20 runs scored, while Hinton has logged 20 hits and is tied with Barrick with 16 runs knocked in. Matthew Escalera threw a complete game with five strikeouts and zero earned runs in WE’s 12-4 win over Glasgow on Monday.

Glasgow picked up two district wins over ACS last week, but the Scotties have dropped their last four games – including two at the hands of Warren East. Senior Zachary Poore leads the club in batting average (.404), RBI (17), home runs (3), and bases on balls (12). Senior third baseman Weston Caroll is batting .391 with 27 hits, 19 runs, and has seven doubles on the season. The Scotties play Barren County next week with an opportunity to improve their district seeding for the postseason.

16th District Standings

Russell County 6-0

Clinton County 1-1

Cumberland County 1-2

Monroe County 1-4

Metcalfe County 0-2

Upcoming Schedule

Wednesday at 5:30 – Cumberland County at Russell County

Thursday at 5:30 – Clinton County at Monroe County

April 30 at 5:30 – Monroe County at Metcalfe County

April 30 at 5:30 – Clinton County at Cumberland County

Overview

Russell County has been the class of the 16th District again this season, starting its season at 18-3 and 6-0 in district play. Sophomore Carter Stapp has taken a leap after a strong freshman year and is batting a team-best .452 with 28 hits, 28 runs, 21 RBI, and 12 extra-base hits. The Laker lineup has very few holes with senior Trace Stringer is also batting over .400 and has 30 hits, 16 RBI, and 23 stolen bases to date. The dual-threat is 6-0 on the mound in 32 innings with 27 strikeouts and a 1.97 ERA. Coach David Rexroat’s club is favored to win its 14th district title in 15 seasons this season.

Clinton County currently sits in second at 1-1 and travels to Monroe County on Thursday for a district battle with the Falcons. Senior Walker Casada and sophomore Caleb Thrasher lead the way at the plate with Casada batting .382 and 21 hits. Thrasher is batting .370 with 20 hits and 16 RBI. Junior Nick Poore went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI in the Bulldogs 9-8 win over Monroe on Tuesday.

The Falcons of Monroe County are led by Travis Wood and Brison Nuckols among others this season. The junior Wood is hitting .415 with a team-best 23 runs and 22 hits. The sophomore Nuckols is hitting .365 with 19 hits, 18 runs, and a team-best 19 RBI. Monroe is looking to reach the 4th Region Tournament for the first time since 2018.

Cumberland County sits at 1-2 in district play after splitting with Monroe County last week and dropping the opener to Russell County on Tuesday. Burk Sells and Lance Willen are each batting over .420 and have scored 12 runs apiece on the season. Sells has been the Panthers most-pitcher with an ERA of 3.56 and only ten earned runs in 19 and ⅔ innings pitched.
Metcalfe County was off this week in regard to district play but will have a home-and-home with Monroe County next week. Daniel Garrett’s club is led by Collin Shive with a .306 average, 11 hits, nine RBI, and a home run. Maddux and Chance Garrett have been strong on the mound, only allowing a combined 15 runs in over 41 combined innings pitched. Maddux has struck out 16 opposing batters and has a 2.49 ERA, while Chance has only allowed 15 hits and holds a 2.62 ERA.

Girls Basketball

A top ten poll projecting next season might seem like a pointless endeavor. For example, a season ago, Lareesha Cawthorn was coming off of a season in which she led Russellville to its first region tournament victory since 1993. As all area basketball fans now know, she transferred to Franklin-Simpson and suddenly a team we predicted seventh (Franklin) was 30-2 and in the region semifinals. With this anecdote in mind, our Never Too Early ST Power Rankings are simply for enjoyment as fans cope with the realization that basketball season has come to an end. Take a look at our rankings and see who you think should be ranked higher!

*Team rosters may change over time but this is how they project at the end of the 2023-24 season. Players listed as their 2024-25 class.

*2023-24 Record Listed*

Bowling Green 24-11

Returning: Katy Smiley (Sr), NaTaya Wardlow (Sr), Emma Macy (So), Aniyah Smith (Jr)

Departing: NaTajia Alexander, Ryleigh Campbell, JaSiyah Franklin, JaKiah Mitchell, Chloe Potter, Alexus McDonald

There is no question that the Bowling Green program will deeply miss its six seniors who helped coach Calvin Head win the last four region titles. However, when a dynasty is in the middle of a run, it does not make sense to pick against them. Coach Head and the Lady Purples have won five-straight region championships and will look to make it six as they return leading scorer and rebounder Katy Smiley. BG will also bring back star point guard NaTaya Wardlow into the fold. Look for sophomore Emma Macy and center Aniyah Smith to make a big jump in 2025.

Returning: Lareesha Cawthorn (Sr), Kloie Smith (Jr), Lyniah Brown (Sr), Jasmine Savage (Sr), Naja Nolan (Sr), Vanessa Ray (Sr), Sa’nya Downey (Sr), Majayla Butler (So)

Departing: Katelyn McAlister, Jayden Spears

If Bowling Green is 1A, the Lady Wildcats of Franklin-Simpson are 1B by the slimmest of margins. Coach Ashley Taylor’s squad went 30-2 this season and should return nearly every piece from this season. 13th District Player of the Year and 1st Team All-Region pick Lareesha Cawthorn will be back for her senior season after averaging 17.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. As a team, Franklin will return its top six scorers and rebounders from the 23-24 campaign. Watch out for Jasmine Savage, who hit 67 three-pointers this season and shot 41% from beyond the arc. The incoming senior only attempted seven two-pointers.

Returning: Sam Carver (Sr), Lydia Jones (Sr), Kennedy Lawson (Sr), Madison Lawson (Sr), Keyoni Collins (Sr), Kenzie Upton (Sr), Brelynn Wardlow (So)

Departing: RaeEllen Jones, Rileigh Jones, Cecelia Martter

After a 7-22 season in 22-23, Warren East did not make our Never Too Early list a year ago. However, after going 26-5 and winning its first district championship since 2007, the Lady Raiders will not be sneaking up on anyone in 2025. Coach Jenny Neville’s club will return its top four scorers from the 23-24 campaign, including All-Region pick Sam Carver (10.2 PPG) and Madison Lawson (9.2 PPG). East will be the favorite to repeat as 15th District champions.

Todd County Central 19-13

Returning: Alexis Taylor (Sr), Jordyn Shemwell (Fr), JaMya Kay (Jr), Chloe Collins (So), Daymea Garrett (Jr)

Departing: Abby Williams, Zalaya Smith

In coach Nick Suttle’s second season, the Lady Rebels reached the 4th Region Tournament for the first time since 2018 and only the second time this decade. Todd County Central did not stop at merely qualifying for the event, defeating the 15th and 16th District champions en route to a berth in the region finals. Suttle’s program will return a majority of its rotation, none more important than senior Alexis Taylor. Taylor was named to ST’s All-Hoops First Team after averaging 18.1 points and a region-best 10.6 rebounds per game. No one will be surprised if the Lady Rebels are playing for another region title in 2025.

Metcalfe County 20-13

Returning: Kassady London (Sr), Bree Jolly (Jr), Jozie Allen (So), Aubrey Glass (Jr), Lily Blythe (So), Aubrie Compton (Jr)

Departing: Anna Blythe

One thing that is likely not talked about enough: the consistency of Metcalfe County Basketball. Two women have been at the forefront of their success over the course of the last half-decade: Kassady London and Anna Blythe. Though graduating this spring, Blythe appeared in the last five region tournaments for the Lady Hornets. The graduating senior improved her scoring and rebounding output in each of her last three seasons. Coach Heidi Coleman will miss Blythe immensely; however, the rest of the team is set to return, including super-senior London. A second team all-region pick, London has appeared in the last six region tournaments. She averaged 13.3 points per game in 23-24 and will look to lead the Lady Hornets to a fifth-straight district title in 2025.

Barren County 23-8

Returning: Kaitlyn Elmore (Sr), Katie Gearlds (Sr), Taylor Strange (Sr), Ann Ashley Atkinson (Jr), Shelby Byrd (So), Hannah Bragg (Jr), Riley Wilson (Jr), Addyson McFall (Jr)

Departing: Abby Varney, Katie Murphy

It is certainly plausible that we look up a year from now and realize that having Barren County at #6 is far too low. The Trojanettes will return six of their top seven scorers from a 23-win team that was primed for a deep run into the region tournament before being upset in the district semifinals. However, the fact that Piper Lindsey will no longer be able to call upon Abby Varney or Katie Murphy gives me a little pause. Both had outstanding careers on the hardwood for Barren. The program will now turn to All-District performer Kaitlyn Elmore, along with Shelby Byrd (7.7 PPG) and Ann Ashley Atkinson (5.4 PPG, 4.8 RPG).

South Warren 13-17

Returning: McLaine Hudson (Jr), Ashley Overbay (Sr), Jenna Lindsey (Sr), Jooniper Strow (Fr)

Departing: Grace Maxwell, Hannah Bolin, Alexis Martin, Abigail Overbay

The Lady Spartans will return three of their top four scorers from this season, including All-Region performer McLaine Hudson. The sophomore averaged 16.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Hudson increased her scoring average by nearly six points per game from a strong freshman season. and her 11.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. After appearing in 29 games as a seventh grader, Jooniper Strow was South’s second-leading scorer in 23-24 at 7.9 points per game. The eighth grader was also named to the Sporting Times’ All-Freshman Team. Coach Lane Embry’s club will like its chances to reach a third region tournament in four seasons.

Cumberland County 18-12

Returning: Madi Cooksey (So), Abby Morgan (Jr), Kenzie Willen (So), Keagan Walden (Jr), Erica Branham (Jr)

Departing: Graci Craft, Jayleana Smith

Despite missing the 4th Region Tournament, the 2023-24 season was a success for the Cumberland County Lady Panthers. Returning their top four scorers and three rebounders from an 18-win team that won the All-A region championship is a great place to start for next season. Madi Cooksey (13.6 PPG, 6.4 RPG) continues to be a steady star for Cumberland. All of coach Kristen Anderson’s core will still be underclassmen in 2025 as the Lady Panthers seek to reach the 4th Region Tournament for the first time since 2015.

February 27-March 1 – Allen County-Scottsville High School

2023 Champion – Warren East

Warren East captured its first 15th District championship in a 56-55 thriller over Barren County. Isaiah Andrews nailed five three-pointers to score 25 points for the Raiders. Barren County qualified for its fourth-straight region tournament.

Last Five Championship Games

2023 – Warren East over Barren County

2022 – Barren County over Glasgow

2021 – Allen County-Scottsville over Barren County

2020 – Barren County over Allen County-Scottsville

2019 – Glasgow over Allen County-Scottsville

Schedule

Tuesday, February 27 @ 6:00pm – #1 Barren County vs. #4 Allen County-Scottsville

February 27 @ 7:30pm – #2 Warren East vs. #3 Glasgow

Friday, March 1 @ 6:00pm – Championship Game

#1 – Barren County Trojans (19-11)

How They Can Win

As steady as they come, the Barren County Trojans have been a near-lock to reach the 4th Region Tournament in the 2020s. Two district titles and two district runner-ups, the Trojans are listed as favorites to bring home another district title to Glasgow. Coach Warren Cunningham’s club is deep, with six players averaging at least six points. Led by junior Tate Spillman’s 14.7 points per game, BC has three players with at least 50 three-point field goals on the season (Spillman, Mason Bunch, and Will Compton). The Trojans also swept 2-seed Warren East. What might a third matchup bring?

#2 – Warren East Raiders (19-10)

How They Can Win

In its inaugural season in the 15th District, Warren East captured the district championship and reached the semifinals of the 4th Region Tournament. The Raiders are trending in the right direction in 2024, winning ten of twelve at the time of this preview’s publication. Kaleb Prince leads the team in scoring at 15.1 points per game, while Brenden Bratcher has hit more than 50 three-pointers at 11.3 points per contest.

#3 – Glasgow (8-16)

How They Can Win

Despite its 7-16 record, the Glasgow Scotties have been in nearly every game this season. Coach William Buford’s club has ten losses by 12 points or less, including five of their last six. Senior John Carter Walbert is averaging 15.4 points per game, including an 83% clip from the free throw line. Sophomore Jerrick Martin is a key to the Scotties’ success, averaging 10.9 points and a team-best 6.6 rebounds per contest.

#4 – Allen County-Scottsville (3-24)

How They Can Win

Allen County-Scottsville may have only three wins on the season; however, one of those victories came two weeks ago over the team that the Patriots will face in the 15th District Tournament. On February 5 in Scottsville, junior Robert Robledo dropped 24 points with four three-pointers as ACS spurned the upset of the season. The key to another upset will likely look similar to the first: hitting high-percentage shots and outrebounding the Trojans. The Patriots shot 60% in the win and outrebounded Barren by eight.

Prediction

The district semifinals have some appetizing matchups with Barren trying to exact revenge on Allen and Glasgow trying to overcome a fourth loss of the season to Warren East. Both favorites will move on, giving fans a Barren County-Warren East finale for a second, consecutive season. Although the Trojans swept the season series, an important Raider player missed both matchups: Jari Barber. The all-district pick of a season ago is averaging nine points and eight rebounds per game. Barber’s presence inside gives the Raiders a unique look that is tough to defend. In the last regular-season game he appeared against the Trojans, the senior center had 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Coach Kyle Benge and his staff will be hoping for a similar effect if the two teams meet in the district title game.

As for the Trojans, it’s no secret Cunningham’s club likes to shoot the three ball. In fact, 51% of Barren’s shots come from beyond the arc. As noted above, four players have hit at least 40 three-point field goals on the season. If the Trojans are hitting from deep, they will be a hard out throughout the entire postseason. Will Compton canned five threes in a 72-50 win over East in early December. The January meeting was much closer (60-55) as the Trojans hit only six three-pointers and shot 26% from deep.

What would a third matchup bring? Barber’s introduction to the lineup will certainly provide a wrinkle for the Trojans, but will it be enough? After an instant classic in the 2023 district finale, BC and WE will be looking to entertain fans again. The Trojans will be closer to their season average from behind the arc; however, the trio of Prince, Bratcher, and Barber will make enough plays to give the Raiders consecutive district championships.

Outlook: Warren East has lost five of its last seven games after starting the season 7-1. An eleven-day break caused by the winter storms in the area last week will hopefully give the Raiders a clean reset they needed to get back on track. District games against Glasgow and Allen County-Scottsville will provide Kyle Benge’s club the opportunity to further its hold on second in the 15th District.

Russell County 9-7

Outlook: Russell County is one of only two teams with an undefeated record against both district and region opponents (Bowling Green). The Lakers have lost three out of four games, but they will look to right the ship with four games this week. On Monday, Mayes Gosser and company will travel to Cumberland County for their first district meeting with the Panthers. Gosser leads the club in scoring (14.7 points) and rebounding (7.4).

Update: Russell County defeated Cumberland County, 63-61, on the road

South Warren 8-7

Outlook: South Warren stays in the top six despite dropping three-straight games to open the new year. In the Spartans’ latest showing, they hung with Warren Central before succumbing to a 69-60 defeat. A big week is on the horizon for Carlos Quarles’ club with a road game at Greenwood on Monday and a visit from Bowling Green on Friday. The winner of Monday’s matchup will have a leg up on the other for the district’s 3-seed in next month’s tournament.

Update: South knocked off Greenwood, 71-62, in overtime on Monday

Upcoming Games: Bowling Green (Friday)

Clinton County 10-8

Outlook: Before multiple games were canceled due to inclement weather, the Bulldogs of Clinton County clinched another trip to the All-A State Tournament with wins over Russellville and Monroe County. Now Nick Irwin’s club will travel to Corbin on Thursday where a date with Raceland will begin its trek for a state title. A win over Raceland will set up a quarterfinal meeting with Williamsburg or Murray on Friday. The Bulldogs reached the finals of the All-A in 2021.

Upcoming Games: vs. Raceland (Thursday)

Monroe County 11-7

Outlook: Monroe County reached the finals of the 4th Region All “A” Classic but lost to Clinton County, 52-49, despite 22 points from senior Austen Arnett. The Falcons have won three of four and will look to continue the stellary play with three games this week. A district meeting with Metcalfe County on Thursday will show fans how competitive Monroe will be heading into the home stretch of the season.

Update: Monroe County lost to Hart County, 72-68, on Monday night

Upcoming Games: at Metcalfe County (Thursday), Barren County (Saturday)

Franklin-Simpson 7-7

Outlook: Franklin-Simpson avenged a district championship loss at the hands of Todd County Central by picking up a 64-61 win on January 5. Four players hit double figures, led by OJ Gamble’s 17 points, as the Wildcats moved to 1-0 in 13th District play. Coach Dee Spencer’s club will have the opportunity to move atop the standings with two district games this week. A road trip to Russellville Monday and a home date with Todd await Franklin.

Update: Franklin defeated Russellville, 77-53, on Monday night

Upcoming Games: at Allen County-Scottsville (Tuesday), Todd County Central (Friday)

Logan County 9-7

Outlook: Logan County feature at #10 in our rankings after winning eight of its last games dating back to mid-December. Before the snow break, the Cougars defeated district foes Russellville (72-70) and Todd County Central (80-68) to sit atop the 13th District standings at 2-0. Samson Hightower leads the club in scoring with 14.1 points per game.

Upcoming Games: Greenwood (Tuesday), at Russellville (Friday)

Next Teams Up: Cumberland County, Greenwood

3rd Region Golf in Full Swing with Bowling Green and Greenwood having outstanding seasons

By Perry Swack

High school golf holds the distinctive honor of being the first sport to start its season as the first tournaments often tee off in late July. With the state tournament in early October, most of the season is played in the summer despite being considered a “fall sport.” The brutal heat has certainly played a factor through the season’s first month. How much it affects the remaining months remains to be seen. For now, we want to give you some of the top storylines of the golf season as the calendar flips to September.

Bowling Green entered the season as the defending 3rd Region champions and finished third at the state tournament in 2022. Three of the Purples’ top returners are back for one final rodeo, including Reed Richey, Ben Davenport, and Graham Hightower. The trio has played in a combined nine region tournaments. Adding a fourth senior Ty Wilson and BG is ready to contend again for a region title and state crown. “We will go as far as the four seniors will take us,” longtime head coach Adam Whitt concurred. “They played in a lot of tournaments for us last year. Graham Hightower had one of the best rounds of the day on Day 2 of the state tournament. They all have experience playing in tournaments where the intensity is cranked up.” Hightower fired a one-over 73 on the final day of the state tournament to tie for 25th overall. Davenport also had a strong showing, shooting 72 and 76 to tie for 6th at +4. He also shot a 73 at the region tournament to finish third.

Whitt and the Purples picked up where they left off last season with a strong first month of 2023. The team won the state’s oldest invitational, the KIT at Wildwood Country Club in Louisville, with a team total of 298 to defeat some of the state’s top teams including CAL, St Xavier, Trinity, and Madison Central. The Purples also picked up victories at the Daviess County Invitational, Willow Oaks, Madisonville NH Invite, the Spartan Clash, the Schoolboy Classic, the Wildcat Shootout, and placed second in the Trinity Invitational and Semi-State Preview. Richey, a WKU commit, won individual honors at the Daviess County Invitational (with a school record (-7) 64) and the Semi-State Preview, while Davenport won the individual title at the Schoolboy. Playing a tough schedule is all a part of the process of being prepared when the region and state tournaments begin. “We travel the state,” said Whitt of the Purples’ schedule. “We try to challenge our guys and let them see what the entire state has to offer.”

BG Golf

Another 3rd Region team looking to make some noise across the commonwealth this year is the Greenwood Gators. Winners of the 2020 and 2021 region championships, GHS was clipped by BG in 2022 by six strokes. The Gators have a new coach in 2023 as Garrett Kastelic takes over at The Swamp for a program that has reached the last four state tournaments. On the links, senior Jacob Lang has been on a tear picking up individual victories at Willow Oaks, the Bullitt East Invitational, the Spartan Clash, the Kentucky Cup, and the Christian County Invitational. The Gators were team champions in the Christian County Invite, their home Gator Invitational at Bowling Green Country Club, the Warren East Invitational, and the Semi-State Preview at Mineral Mound Golf Club.

GHS Golf

The strength of the Gator lineup has been in their top two golfers, Lang, a UK commit, and sophomore Layton Richey. “Jacob Lang and Layton Richey are amazing players and are already off to a strong start,” Kastelic told the Sporting Times. Richey finished second overall in both the Gator Invitational and the Semi-State Preview. Both finished in the top five at the region tournament last season. In high school golf, a team utilizes five players per tournament, taking the best four scores as their “team total”. While the Gators have some of the state’s top golfers at the top of their lineup, Kastelic is confident in his entire outfit. “Our #3 man on the varsity roster who has impressed us is Jake Russell. Jake’s maturity and experience has been key this season,” noted Kastelic. “He is cool, calm, and knows how to get the job done. I’m excited to see what the rest of the season has for him.”

As we enter the final month of the golf season, area teams are turning their attention to the impending 3rd Region Tournament that will be played at Indian Hills Country Club on September 18. “When I first saw our schedule, I was in awe,” said Kastelic. “To have both region and state within twenty minutes of our school is a blessing.” Both Whitt and Kastelic are not taking the familiarity with the course for granted though. “We will play it a few times during the year to make sure nothing surprises us,” said Whitt. “Just because we have ‘home course’ advantage, doesn’t mean we’ll take it lightly,” added Kastelic. “We’ll prepare as if it is a new course.”

Barren County senior Jameson Corbin will expect to contend at the region tournament, as will Glasgow seniors Jase Cook and Bo Shelton, Allen County-Scottsville junior Eli Stamper and sophomore Baron Rutledge among others. Corbin, an EKU commit, has racked up the victories in 2023 with wins at the Raider Invitational, the Wildcat Shootout, and the Battle at the Creek. The field at Indian Hills Country Club will be stacked and will cap one of the most exciting golf seasons we have seen in quite some time.

LEXINGTON – Barren County’s remarkable season comes to a halt at 32 victories.

The Trojanettes dug themselves into an early hole against Louisville Male and
rallied in the second half but could never surge out in front of the Lady Bulldogs in
a 63-49 loss in the quarterfinals of the KHSAA Girls Sweet Sixteen® Basketball
Tournament at Rupp Arena on Friday night.

“I thought from the start we struggled a little bit to score,” Barren County coach
Piper Lindsey said. “(Male’s) defense is obviously pretty tough. But credit these
girls. We could’ve folded in the first quarter and just let it out go and walked off
the floor with a 30-point deficit. But we didn’t. Extremely proud of the girls to
continue to stay in the fight.”

McKenzie England led Barren County with 16 points while drilling a game-high
four 3-pointers, and Elizabeth Bertram added 14 points. Bailey and Mallory Pedigo
tallied seven and eight points, respectively for the Trojanettes—the twin sisters
also combining to dish out nine of Barren County’s 14 assists.

Georgia State signee Joelle Johnson led Male with a double-double of 24 points
and 10 rebounds as the Lady Bulldog senior went 10-of-14 from the field.

Male (24-7) took control of the game early as the Lady Bulldogs raced out to a 14-
2 lead at the first media timeout and held a 16-6 advantage after one quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs built their lead up to as much as 26-12 with 3:37 to go before
halftime on a jumper by Destiny Combs, but the Trojanettes ended the half on an
8-4 run to close the gap to 10 at the intermission—McKenzie England stepping
out and knocking down two timely trifectas for Barren County.

The Trojanettes (32-5) trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter but put
together a nice run at the end of third quarter as a 3-pointer by England and a
layup in transition by Bertram whittled the deficit to 45-40 going into the final
frame.

The two teams traded baskets to start the fourth before England netted her
fourth 3-pointer of the night to make the score 50-45 with 4:26 left in regulation.

That would be the closest Barren County would get the remainder of the game as
Male ended the game on a 13-4 run to punch its ticket to the semifinals.

“I got to give Barren County credit,” Male coach Champ Ligon, Jr. said. “They’re a
really good team and they made that late run at as. We responded by sticking the
dagger in it at the foul line, getting some rebounds, and playing defense.”

Even though the season did not end the way the Barren County seniors wanted it
to, playing their final game in Rupp Arena was still an appropriate end to a playing
career that each of the Trojanettes have thoroughly enjoyed.

“To play my last game as a Trojanette at Rupp means a lot,” said England, who
was named to the all-tournament team. “I couldn’t ask for a better team to have
or a better team to hold me accountable. I couldn’t ask for better coaches or
better fan support. It just means a lot.”

This senior class has brought Barren County back into prominence by building and
building one season at a time, and Lindsey says that they have laid the foundation
for a bright future for Trojanette basketball.

“They got us back on the map. They were freshmen when I first got here. We
were 12-16 their freshmen year, and each year we got a little bit better. We
finally made it to the region their sophomore year, we won the district their junior
year, and then we finally doubled up and won the district and region their senior
year. For them to be able to do that in the quick turnaround and how they did
that in four years…that speaks volumes.”

After a 12-year drought, Barren County is back on top.

The Trojanettes – who entered the Girls’ Region 4 Tournament as the favorite to win it – lived up to their title, defeating Bowling Green, 47-35, on Tuesday night at E.A. Diddle Arena to capture their first regional championship since 2007.

“It’s a great feeling,” Barren County coach Piper Lindsey said. “It’s one that I really can’t describe. It’s almost too good to be true to be able to do this. I’m proud of the girls and proud of all the kids that played and how hard they’ve worked from Day 1. They’ve really trusted the process, trusted the coaching staff and trusted each other to get where they are.

“I’m just so proud of ‘em.”

Barren County – now 31-4 on the season – played a competitive, back-and-forth game with Bowling Green but used a dominant fourth quarter and made clutch plays down the stretch to hold off the Purples and come out on top.

The Trojanettes trailed 10-7 after the opening quarter before getting within a point at 19-18 at halftime. BCHS continued to battle in the second half and was able to take a 29-27 lead into the fourth before outscoring Bowling Green 18-8 in the final period to earn a 12-point victory.

Barren County held Bowling Green – which finished its season 26-8 overall – to just 12-of-50 (24 percent) shooting from the field, while also forcing the Lady Purples to commit 13 turnovers.

“They believe. They believe in what we’re trying to do,” Lindsey said of her team’s defensive effort. “They trust it. It’s all about buying in, and I’m so glad they do exactly what they’re supposed to do. They’re quick, they know what they’re supposed to do, and they finish with box outs. I thought we did a good job all-around for the most part.”

Elizabeth Bertram led the way for the Trojanettes with a game-high 16 points and four assists, while McKenzie England finished with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. In addition to that duo, Bailey Pedigo scored 8 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to round out the stat sheet.

BCHS shot 16-of-39 (41 percent) from the floor and tallied 14 assists on its 16 makes. The Trojanettes shot 41 percent or better in each quarter but the first, including a 75 percent (3-of-4) showing in the third.

“It’s like I told everyone else, progressing from freshman year to senior year – it’s crazy,” England said. “Thinking we went from 12 wins to 31 wins now, that’s crazy. It feels great. It just feels great.”

With Barren County’s win, it now advances to the 2019 KHSAA Girls’ Sweet Sixteen State Basketball Tournament, which begins March 13 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

The Trojanettes will meet Region 15 champion Pikeville (27-7) at 11 a.m. CT March 14 in the opening round.

“We’ve gotta rest a little bit, but of course the girls are gonna be chomping at the bit ready to go,” said Lindsey. “We’ve gotta be ready to go next Thursday.”

Bowling Green led 19-12 at the 5:24 mark of the second quarter after Keyozdon Jones made back-to-back 3-pointers, but Barren County answered with a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to 19-18 at the break.

Back-to-back baskets from Pedigo to open the third pushed that run to 10-0 and put the Trojanettes up 22-19, helping them inherit much momentum.

Things remained competitive down the stretch, and a pair of Meadow Tisdale free throws gave the Lady Purples a 27-25 lead at the 2:17 mark of the third. However, Barren County closed the period with buckets from England and Karleigh Delk to be up 29-27 entering the fourth.

That’s when the Trojanettes went to work.

“It was huge,” Barren County guard Mallory Pedigo said. “We knew that if we won that quarter we would win the game, so we just put our heads together and made it happen.”

With the game tied 29-all with 7:22 remaining, Barren County put together a dominant 10-0 run to build a 39-29 advantage with 3:36 left. Bowling Green attempted to make a comeback, but the Trojanettes’ aggressive defense kept it from doing that and BCHS was crowned champion.

Keyozdon Jones finished with 11 points to lead the Lady Purples, while T’Alla Brown tallied 10.

After a 10-year drought, the Barren County girls’ basketball team will play Tuesday for a regional title.

Behind a dominant 71-41 win over Logan County on Monday night in the Region 4 Tournament semifinals at E.A. Diddle Arena, the Trojanettes – champions of District 15 – have earned a spot in the regional final for the first time since 2009.

“It’s really exciting – especially with the seniors that we have this year,” Barren County guard Elizabeth Bertram said. “It’s a big deal. Barren County hasn’t been this far in a long time and to be here is exciting. We’re ready for the championship game tomorrow.”

Barren County (30-4) will meet Bowling Green (26-7) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the championship game. The Trojanettes won the regular-season meeting over the Lady Purples, 59-53, on Feb. 4.

The winner will punch their ticket to the Girls’ Sweet Sixteen, which begins March 13 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

The Trojanettes jumped out to a 20-5 lead after the opening quarter and extended their advantage to 42-18 at halftime. They later took a 55-30 lead into the fourth and were able to cruise through the final eight minutes en route to the lopsided victory.

“I thought we did really, really well running in transition,” Barren County coach Piper Lindsey said. “That was one of our keys from the start to run and finish and sprint in transition. I thought our defense was excellent, which helped us rebound the basketball and get out early and quick. I thought our guards did a good job of finding the open person, and I thought we did a good job finishing.”

Elizabeth Bertram finished with a game-high 16 points for Barren County, while Bailey Pedigo nearly recorded a triple-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Eve Jackson tallied 11 points, and McKenzie England rounded out the Trojanettes’ stat sheet with 10 points and 9 boards.

BCHS shot 29-of-57 (50.9 percent) from the field, recorded 21 assists and finished with a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Paige Vanzant paced Logan County (22-11) with 9 points in its season-ending defeat.

Bowling Green beats Glasgow, advances to title game

For the fourth time in five seasons, the Bowling Green girls’ basketball team will be playing for a regional championship.

Taking on Glasgow in the semifinals of the Region 4 Tournament on Monday night at E.A. Diddle Arena, the Lady Purples – champions of District 14 – earned a 65-56 win to earn another trip to the regional final.

Bowling Green (26-7), which is the defending Region 4 champion, will meet Barren County (30-4) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the championship game. The Trojanettes won the regular-season meeting over the Lady Purples, 59-53, on Feb. 4.

“At the end of the day, we’ve just gotta go play basketball,” Bowling Green coach Calvin Head said. “We’re gonna do what we do and try and be the best version of ourselves as possible tomorrow night. It’s our last time playing in Bowling Green for the season, so we’re gonna try and go out with a bang.”

The winner will punch their ticket to the Girls’ Sweet Sixteen, which begins March 13 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

“Big challenge. Big challenge,” Head said of Tuesday’s matchup. “They’ve been predicted to win the region all season – and rightfully so. They’re a really good basketball team. They’re well balanced, have three perimeter scorers and (McKenzie) England’s on a tear right now.

“We’re gonna go and get some rest and try and prepare a little bit overnight and after school. We’re just gonna come play hard. Hopefully the gym is full tomorrow watching two really good basketball teams go at it.”

The Lady Purples built an 18-5 lead after the opening quarter and took a 32-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime. They later went up 48-38 after three and were able to stay in front throughout the final eight minutes.

T’Alla Brown finished with a game-high 21 points to lead BGHS, while Taylor Ragland scored 17 and Saniyah Shelton added 10. The Lady Purples shot 22-of-52 (42.3 percent) from the field, forced the Lady Scotties to commit 21 turnovers and turned those takeaways into 26 points.

“Our philosophy tonight was to really try to get after it defensively and try and keep the tempo up,” Head said. “I thought we did a really good job of that. 21 turnovers and I think 26 points or so, and that’s an advantage for us when we’re able to do that.”

Anzley Adwell paced Glasgow (21-10) with 16 points in its season-ending defeat.

“I’m proud of my kids. They fought really, really hard for 32 minutes,” Glasgow coach Justin Stinson said. “That’s what we asked them to do. It just wasn’t in the cards for us tonight.”

GHS – 5 16 17 18 — 56

BGHS – 18 14 16 17 — 65

GHS – Adwell 16, Hughes 13, Gore 10, Lee 7, Page 7, Bradley 3.

BG – Brown 21, Ragland 17, Shelton 10, K. Jones 7, L. Jones 4, Tisdale 4, Gray 2.
