Diddle Arena, the Trojanettes – champions of District 15 – have earned a spot in the regional final for the first time since 2009.

“It’s really exciting – especially with the seniors that we have this year,” Barren County guard Elizabeth Bertram said. “It’s a big deal. Barren County hasn’t been this far in a long time and to be here is exciting. We’re ready for the championship game tomorrow.”

Barren County (30-4) will meet Bowling Green (26-7) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the championship game. The Trojanettes won the regular-season meeting over the Lady Purples, 59-53, on Feb. 4.

The winner will punch their ticket to the Girls’ Sweet Sixteen, which begins March 13 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

The Trojanettes jumped out to a 20-5 lead after the opening quarter and extended their advantage to 42-18 at halftime. They later took a 55-30 lead into the fourth and were able to cruise through the final eight minutes en route to the lopsided victory.

“I thought we did really, really well running in transition,” Barren County coach Piper Lindsey said. “That was one of our keys from the start to run and finish and sprint in transition. I thought our defense was excellent, which helped us rebound the basketball and get out early and quick. I thought our guards did a good job of finding the open person, and I thought we did a good job finishing.”

Elizabeth Bertram finished with a game-high 16 points for Barren County, while Bailey Pedigo nearly recorded a triple-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Eve Jackson tallied 11 points, and McKenzie England rounded out the Trojanettes’ stat sheet with 10 points and 9 boards.

BCHS shot 29-of-57 (50.9 percent) from the field, recorded 21 assists and finished with a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Paige Vanzant paced Logan County (22-11) with 9 points in its season-ending defeat.

LCHS – 5 13 12 11 — 41

BCHS – 20 22 13 16 — 71

LC – Paige Vanzant 9, Alvis 7, Bingham 6, Hale 6, Nichols 5, White 3, Peyton Vanzant 3, Page 2.

BC – Bertram 16, B. Pedigo 6, Delk 4, Rice 3, Bush 2.

Bowling Green beats Glasgow, advances to title game

For the fourth time in five seasons, the Bowling Green girls’ basketball team will be playing for a regional championship.

Taking on Glasgow in the semifinals of the Region 4 Tournament on Monday night at E.A. Diddle Arena, the Lady Purples – champions of District 14 – earned a 65-56 win to earn another trip to the regional final.

Bowling Green (26-7), which is the defending Region 4 champion, will meet Barren County (30-4) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the championship game. The Trojanettes won the regular-season meeting over the Lady Purples, 59-53, on Feb. 4.

“At the end of the day, we’ve just gotta go play basketball,” Bowling Green coach Calvin Head said. “We’re gonna do what we do and try and be the best version of ourselves as possible tomorrow night. It’s our last time playing in Bowling Green for the season, so we’re gonna try and go out with a bang.”

The winner will punch their ticket to the Girls’ Sweet Sixteen, which begins March 13 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

“Big challenge. Big challenge,” Head said of Tuesday’s matchup. “They’ve been predicted to win the region all season – and rightfully so. They’re a really good basketball team. They’re well balanced, have three perimeter scorers and (McKenzie) England’s on a tear right now.

“We’re gonna go and get some rest and try and prepare a little bit overnight and after school. We’re just gonna come play hard. Hopefully the gym is full tomorrow watching two really good basketball teams go at it.”

The Lady Purples built an 18-5 lead after the opening quarter and took a 32-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime. They later went up 48-38 after three and were able to stay in front throughout the final eight minutes.

T’Alla Brown finished with a game-high 21 points to lead BGHS, while Taylor Ragland scored 17 and Saniyah Shelton added 10. The Lady Purples shot 22-of-52 (42.3 percent) from the field, forced the Lady Scotties to commit 21 turnovers and turned those takeaways into 26 points.

“Our philosophy tonight was to really try to get after it defensively and try and keep the tempo up,” Head said. “I thought we did a really good job of that. 21 turnovers and I think 26 points or so, and that’s an advantage for us when we’re able to do that.”

Anzley Adwell paced Glasgow (21-10) with 16 points in its season-ending defeat.

“I’m proud of my kids. They fought really, really hard for 32 minutes,” Glasgow coach Justin Stinson said. “That’s what we asked them to do. It just wasn’t in the cards for us tonight.”

GHS – 5 16 17 18 — 56

BGHS – 18 14 16 17 — 65

GHS – Adwell 16, Hughes 13, Gore 10, Lee 7, Page 7, Bradley 3.

BG – Brown 21, Ragland 17, Shelton 10, K. LCHS extended its advantage to 48-36 after three and maintained a lead throughout the final period to come out on top and extend its season.

“I thought my team wanted to win,” Logan County coach Finley Baird said. “They went out there and executed like they were supposed to and like we gave the scouting report. They did what was asked of them. They wanted to win, so they went out there and did what it took to win that ballgame.”

With the Lady Cougars’ victory, they’ll now play Barren County in Monday’s 6 p.m. semifinal.

Kaylee Harbison led Metcalfe County (22-9) with 17 points in its season-ending defeat.

“I thought we played really hard,” Metcalfe County coach Josh Hurt said. “Logan County played exceptionally well. The Lady Cougars were down 11-5 after the first and 21-12 at halftime before closing the third quarter with a 13-0 run – which came after Baird was given a technical – to get within 38-34 entering the final period.

Outscoring Greenwood 24-12 in the fourth, LCHS was able to complete the comeback and record an exciting victory.

“I said, ‘OK ladies, I got the technical for you because you’ve been getting beat up and it hasn’t been called, so now you have to go out there and play for me,’” Baird said. “I think they did – that’s what I told them in the locker room.”

Sarah Hale led the way for the Lady Cougars with 18 points and was one of three in double figures as Paige Vanzant finished with 17 points and Kennedy Nichols recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Jacqueline Jackson carried Greenwood (10-13) – which has lost five straight – with 21 points. Carly Miller tallied 10.

“It means a lot,” Hale said of the fight Logan County showed. “They beat us at our place and we got our revenge tonight. Having three people in double figures – we all need to be scoring to win ball games – and playing team ball will help us win. Getting that win was great.”

Greenwood couldn’t have asked for a better start – opening the game with six quick points in a span of 3:10. Vanzant’s score at the 1:54 mark brought Logan County within 8-5, but Megan Une recorded a bucket and Jackson made a free throw to put the Lady Gators up 11-5 after one.

Back-to-back baskets from Jackson made it 15-7 at the 6:18 mark of the second, and a 4:56 scoring drought by the Lady Cougars dug themselves into a 19-9 hole at the 2:48 mark. Une’s bucket with just over a minute left in the half sent Greenwood into the break with a 21-11 lead.

“We came out like we wanted to,” Greenwood head coach Zach Simpson said. “I felt like we controlled the tempo for the first half. We got into some foul troubles, and I think they turned up their defensive intensity in the third quarter and we didn’t have any match for it.

“We told our girls that, ‘Even though this is a tough loss, we’re still heading in the right direction going into tournament time and there is a lot of things you can learn about yourself from games like this.’”

Logan County went to work in the second half.

Down 23-12 after Jackson scored inside, the Lady Cougars put together a dominant 13-0 run – which included 11 points from Hale – to cut their deficit to just four at 38-34 entering the final period.

Vanzant’s layup at the 7:27 mark of the fourth evened the scoreboard at 38-all, and Nichols’ basket gave Logan County its first lead of the night at 40-39 with 6:01 remaining. Four straight points from the Vanzant twins put the Lady Cougars up 54-48 with 30.2 seconds left and a few more sets of clutch free throws sealed it.

“We have heart and our defense is gonna help us in games – even when we’re down by big deficits like 17,” Hale said.

Greenwood returns to action Thursday at home against Butler County, while Logan County travels to Allen County-Scottsville on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m.

Logan County – 5 7 22 24 — 58

Greenwood – 11 10 17 12 — 50

LCHS – Sarah Hale 18, Paige Vanzant 17, Nichols 12, Peyton Vanzant 6, Brittany Garrett 3, Addie White 2.

GHS – Jacqueline Jackson 21, Carly Miller 10, Megan Une 8, Nicole Milam 6, Leia Trinh 5.

Carroll’s put-back lifts Gators over Cougars

A put-back layup by Ben Carroll with 6.2 seconds left lifted the Greenwood boys’ basketball team to a hard-fought 44-43 overtime win over Logan County on Tuesday night at Greenwood High School.

A pair of free throws by the Cougars’ Kelby Epley gave them a 43-41 lead with 59.8 seconds remaining in overtime, but Carroll grabbed a missed shot by Cade Stinnett and put it right back up to send the Gators (13-11) – who have won five straight – out on top.

“Five in a row – and four of them road games; really good wins,” Carroll said. “I hit the big shot to extend this winning streak heading into the postseason.”

The two sides were knotted at 6-all after the opening quarter, and Logan County held a tight 20-17 advantage at halftime. The Cougars outscored Greenwood 11-4 in the third period to lead 31-21 entering the fourth, but the Gators responded with a big frame – which included them outscoring LCHS 17-7 – to tie the game at 38-all and send it into overtime.

Things remained tight in the extra period, but Carroll’s bucket proved to be the game-winner.

“Pretty excited about that one,” Greenwood head coach Bob Pels said of his team’s win. “We were struggling – and it’s not that we were playing badly – Logan’s a really good basketball team, but we got some more action going in the second half and got a little better.

“Ben’s had that opportunity several times this year to make that put-back. He got it right this time.”

Carroll led the way with a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Jack Roberts finished with 12 points and Cade Stinnett added 11.

Dalton Thompson paced the Cougars (18-6) with 10 points.

Greenwood returns to action Friday at home against District 14 foe Warren Central, while Logan County travels to Muhlenberg County on Friday. This team is always unselfish, and that’s the best part about this team.”

Anthony Woodard led Logan County with 19 points while Bell and Krohn added 17 and 10, respectively.

“(Logan) has a good team,” Barren County coach Warren Cunnigham said. “They have a lot of guys that can shoot it and a lot of weapons offensively. They have guys that can shoot around the basket and from the outside.”

Barren County (10-9) was paced in the loss by Gavin Withrow with 19 points while Aden Nyekan had 13. Will Bandy added 10 points, all of which came in the second half after foul trouble limited him in the first half.

Logan County (16-3) led 33-29 at halftime before the Trojans went on a 6-1 run as a basket by Withrow gave Barren a 35-34 lead. The Cougars then responded with a 12-6 scoring spurt to close out the frame as Krohn’s layup gave Logan County a 46-41 edge going into the final quarter. That momentum carried over into the first few minutes of the fourth as the Cougars expanded on their lead.

“The end of the third we lose Krohn there and give up a layup,” Cunningham said. “Start of the fourth they get a bucket, so it went from being three to about seven or eight. The end of quarters really put us in a bind.”

“That shot us up two extra points and gave us some extra momentum,” Tinsley said. “We come out the very first part of the fourth and our defense was excellent. We didn’t really let (Barren) get going.”

Logan County stretched its lead to 64-47 with 2:02 left after a three-point play by Anthony Woodard before Barren County came roaring back with a 14-1 run to close out the game.

“We showed a little fight there,” Cunnigham said. “I wish we had shown a little more fight on a consistent basis throughout the game, but at least we didn’t give in there at the end. We fought, and that’s always good to see.”

Barren County will look to bounce back on Friday night as the Trojans make the trip across town to take on Glasgow in a 15th District contest. The Scotties defeated the Trojans 63-58 at Trojan Gym back on Dec. 28.

Meanwhile Logan County will look to keep rolling as the Cougars host 13th District rival Russellville on Friday night—Logan playing its third game without starting center Nathaniel Vick.

“It’s rivalry time,” Tinsley said. “We’re trying to learn how to play without Vick. Our starting center got hurt last Tuesday at Russell County, and we’re trying to find our way without him a little bit. It’s a work in progress, but I thought we were much better (Tuesday night) than we were last Friday night.”

Trojanettes overcome sluggish start in 65-53 win over Lady Cougars

Barren County came out a little bit sluggish in the start of Tuesday night’s game against Logan County as the Lady Cougars held a 5-2 advantage two minutes into the game.

The Trojanettes were dominant from that point forward.

Barren County ended the first quarter on a 25-8 run to have a 27-13 lead after one, and the Trojanettes were able to answer every Logan County rally the rest of the way to record a 65-53 victory.

The twin sister duo of Bailey and Mallory Pedigo paced Barren County with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Elizabeth Bertram added 11 points, and McKenzie England had six points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Sarah Beth Hale led Logan County in the loss with 17 points while Paige Vanzant and Kennedy Nichols each had nine.

Barren County (17-3) built its lead to as many as 19 points in the second half, but Logan County (12-7) cut the deficit to 58-45 with just under six minutes left in regulation on a 3-pointer by Vanzant. Barren County then went down to the other end of the floor and answered with a trifecta by Mallory Pedigo, and the Trojanettes were in steady control the rest of the way.

Barren County will look to push its winning streak to three games on Friday night as the Trojanettes face crosstown rival Glasgow—looking to avenge a 51-38 loss to the Lady Scotties back on Dec. 28.

“I am positive,” Barren County coach Piper Lindsey said. “I thought we were extremely loose (Tuesday night), and I think the ceiling is high. I feel like we can get better, and that’s a good thing.”

Meanwhile, Logan County will play in its own crosstown rivalry as the Lady Cougars host Russellville. Logan County won the first meeting between the two rivals this season by a score of 60-33.

The post Logan County tops Barren; Trojanettes beat Lady Cougars appeared first on Sporting Times.

Future Stars Shine in 3rd Region Matchup Muhlenberg prevails over Grayson County 74-67

doug-thompson

Basketball

Grayson County

Lady Cougars

Lady Mustangs

Muhlenberg County

Owensboro

This was a game of unknown’s right from the tip. The Lady Mustangs played without their top scorer MaKayla Sampson who is averaging 18 points a game. Maddie Stewart the power forward and the top scorer for the Lady Cougars was sidelined with a pulled hamstring. Both the Lady Mustangs and Lady Cougars are young squads to begin with, but tonight it was their youngest players that shined.

Bailee Harney and Hannah Salsman are both 8th graders. Harney has seen significant playing time for the Lady Mustangs and is averaging over 9 points a game. Salsman is the outstanding guard for the Lady Cougar JV and has seen some recent varsity action for Coach Johnson.

This was a game that came down to ball handling and shot selection. These two teams play contrasting styles. The contrast between the teams showed in the final numbers as Grayson County shot only 7 free throws compared to the 33 free throws Muhlenberg. At first glance you might say it was the officiating, but it wasn’t. Grayson County is known for pressing baseline-to baseline all night long. They are very good at trapping in the half court set as well. Muhlenberg County is more of a control oriented team and their ball handling skills prevailed against the press.

The Lady Mustangs made 21 of 33 free throws which turned out to be the margin difference in the game. Both teams made runs throughout the night but it was the play of both 8th graders that impressed all at the Cougar Den.

Bailee Harney finished with 26 points for Coach Harper’s Lady Mustangs. She sliced through the traps and pounded the interior lanes all night long. Her ability to move the ball gave her teammates an advantage on the offensive end. Madison Simms finished with 16 points, Caitlan Peterson with 14 points and Katy Porter finished with 10 points.

Not to be denied, Hannah Salsman finished with 23 points to lead the Lady Cougars. Kaylan Shull one of only 2 seniors on the Lady Cougar squad finished with 20 points and Grace White, the talented Freshman finished with 10 points.

Muhlenberg County did not play like a team with only 10 wins. They were poised, efficient, and kept their composure against arguably one of the best pressing defenses in the 3rd Region. The press is a double-edged sword, when it works you can dominate your opponent in the transition game. When it doesn’t, your opponent shoots 33 free throws and dictates the tempo of the game.

The Lady Mustangs have only one senior on their squad, Grayson County has two. Although the future is bright with talented underclassmen, tonight the 8th graders shined n a great 3rd Region match-up.

The post Future Stars Shine in 3rd Region Matchup Muhlenberg prevails over Grayson County 74-67 appeared first on Sporting Times.
