Last season, coach Tim Mattingly would have called the 2020 Football season for his Central Hardin Bruins “ A season to forget.” So far, 2021 has been “An unforgettable season” so far. After going on the road and beating DeSales, the Bruins returned for their home opener and really took it to the Butler Bears, 34-0. Central Hardin is starting to look like the team we saw in 2019, which went 8-0 to start the season and the Bruins got it done on both sides of the ball as the offense built a 27-0 halftime lead and simply let the defense do the rest. Quarterback Zak Spurrier threw for 136-yards and a touchdown, while the running game piled up 386-yards (101 from Treyvon Williams) and four (two each) rushing scores from Mason Thompson and Terry Brooks. The defense allowed under 100-yards and the Bruins look to make it 3-0 with a home game against Apollo next. Mattingly will have to have his team continue their torrid pace as their District rivals look like they are tuning up as well.
After losing to Daviess County (30-0) in their opener, the Green Wave came home to face an Elizabethtown team flying high after their opening night win over North Bullitt, so you’d think the Green Wave might be in trouble, Right? Well, after allowing an early field goal by Mary Bell, Meade County went out and shutout the Panthers the rest of the way and got a great performance by the Green Wave defense. Meanwhile, Quarterback Kyle Parker got the Green Wave offense going as they set up a field goal to tie things up and then Parker drove them close enough for a touchdown pass to Nolan Whobrey to put them up to stay with 11:54 left in the first half. After evening their record at 1-1, Meade County will wait until (DeSales was forced to cancel Sept.3rd’s game) and play travel to Oldham County on the 10th.
You’d think DeSales is getting tired of seeing Hardin County area teams after being outscored 6-64 by both Central Hardin and now North Hardin and last Friday’s trip to Radcliff was just the continuation of the season long nightmare they have been facing. After losing the South Warren the previous Saturday, the Trojans were looking for a bounce back game and a 43-0 laugher was just the cure. After building a 14-0 halftime lead, coach Brent Thompson’s team got really defensive as two interceptions off of Colt quarterback Luke Pfaadt by Jujuan Williams and Jayden Thorpe led to 14 more points. Actually, Willaims’s was a pick six and Manie Wimberly scored off a quarterback draw after Thorpe’s pick to make it 28-0. While North Hardin was putting up 260-yards of offense, the defense looked like the 2019 and 2020 “D’” allowing just 49-totol offensive yards by the Colts. North Hardin will go on the road for two first at DuPont Manuel and then Apollo.
In a wild game between two of the stronger Region team’s, both Bardstown and John Hardin each wanted to see where they stood in the Food chain and if the results are in they are both pretty good. Bardstown had to overcome several deficits and a 26-19 Bulldogs lead early in the fourth quarter, but each time, Tiger quarterback Brady Clark kept bringing them back and after a touchdown and a successful PAT tied it up again, Bardstown took advantage of a John Hardin fumble and scored what turned out to be the game winner as Bardstown overcame the Bulldogs 33-26. The Bulldogs will try to get back on the winning pace with a home game against Elizabethtown this Friday, while the Panthers will then face Bardstown after they come off their bye week. Should be an interesting two weeks for Elizabethtown.
LaRue County struggled against a very good John Hardin team the previous week had trouble with Taylor County last week and fell, 44-28. The Cardinals gashed the Hawks for 340-yards on the ground, while Gavin Oliver only attempted three passes for 60-yards. LaRue County has Casey County coming up while Taylor County will face Spencer County.
Bethlehem was involved in a game with Eastern in which quarterback Cooper Stone threw for 343-yards and four touchdowns and the Hayden Osborne caught six of his passes for 170-yards and a touchdown in a losing cause. However, the Eagles were unable to stop Eastern’s Pierce Humpich, who carried 32-times for 416-yards and two scores. Bethlehem will face Thomas Nelson this week.
And LOOK OUT FOR HART COUNTY! They followed up their impressive performance last week with an even better one against McCreary County in a 42-18 win. The Raiders only passed for 16-yards while relying on a ground game which gained 529-yards (214 from Jordan Bradley) and Clark Rexroat and Joshua Crump (152 and 138-yds respectfully) and the three runners totaled six scores as the Raiders started out 2-0. Next up for Hart County is Green County.
