Starting Tuesday October 4th and 5th the best female golfers from around the state tee it up at the Bowling Green Country Club seeking the most coveted team or individual Championship in high school golf, the Leachman Buick GMC Cadillac State Golf Championship.
The boys follow on Friday October 8th and 9th taking their turn to see who will prevail to claim the individual and team Championships on the boys side.
Prior years have produced some pretty good golfers from the state of Kentucky. Kenny Perry won the state championship in 1978, Steve Rogers 1974, Jeff McGill 1969, JB Holms 1998 and Justin Thomas in 2009 just to name a few.
After winning the Leachman Buick GMC Cadillac individual State Championship in 2009, Thomas went on to play for the University of Alabama. Today, Thomas is one of the premier young golfers on the PGA tour winning over 6 million dollars since turning pro two years ago.
On the girls side you had local champions like Whitney Wade, Morgan Hapney, and Russellville’s Nikki Koller two-time back to back championships in 2006 and 2007. Who could forget Emma Talley who won the Leachman Buick GMC Cadillac Championship three times and could have had a 4th had it not been for Emma calling a scoring error on herself costing her the championship. Emma won the US Women’s Amateur Championships twice and is now on the LPGA tour. Franklin-Simpson’s Mary Joiner (pictured) had a great run her four years and now plays on the Western Kentucky University team were she has already earned player of the week honor in the conference.
So once again, future stars of tomorrow are right here in Bowling Green. Local teams that qualified on the girl’s side were Barren County and Green County. Individual qualifiers were Greenwoods Sydney Durrant, South Warren’s Faith Martin, Katie Jones from Glasgow and Addie Westbrook from Taylor County.
On the Boys side the two teams that qualified were South Warren and Greenwood. Individual qualifiers are Dean Carruthers from Warren East, Chase Landrum from Glasgow and John Brewington from Barren County.
Last year, Chase Landrum finished 3rd and is one of the favorites to win the individual championships.
The best part of this week is that it cost nothing for spectators to come by the Bowling Green Country Club and see some great golf. You can walk the course, or view the 9th green, 18th green and the 14th green all within a few yards or each other.
The Bowling Green Country Club is absolutely beautiful and will challenge the best golfers from around the state with their tight tree lined fairways, rolling greens and water hazards lurking on several holes.
