Turnovers sink Raiders in defensive Battle against Meade

IMG_0750 (800x680)A defensive battle between two strong offensive sides took place at Warren East High School. Meade County (5-0) completed their fourth shutout of the season defeating the Warren East Raiders (3-3) 10-0.

The first play from scrimmage Anthony Eakles fumbled and allowed the Green Wave to take over in Raider territory. But the defense of Warren East stepped up and forced a three and out and a punt.

That began the battle of the defenses as three and outs; turnovers and miscues were the name of the game for both offenses.

After a scoreless first quarter, the deadlock was finally broken after a 19 yard field goal from Meade County kicker Corey Stegner. The points came after impressive runs from Green Wave quarterback John Wilson.

At the end of the first half, the Raiders were held to eight yards on the ground, 33 total yards and zero points. The coaches for Warren East came out of the locker room with a different game plan as the Raiders took to the air.

Warren East threw more passes in the first two drives in the third quarter then they did all season to this point. The change of strategy seemed to work as Raiders quarterback Antwan Gilbert began to move the ball down the field and find his teammates Eli Brown and Willie Reynolds.

But the Raiders continued to be unable to finish drives. Every drive in the second half ended in a turnover for the Raiders. They ended up committing five turnovers, three interceptions and two fumbles.

It wasn’t until late in the fourth quarter where Meade County was able to put themselves into some breathing room. After intercepting Gilbert in the Redzone, the Green Wave drove the ball 90 yards which included a 40 yard pass play and a final 26 yard touchdown pass from Wilson to John Millay.

The two possession lead was too much for the Raiders to overcome as the game ended 10-0. The Raiders fall to 3-3 on the season and are now on a two game losing streak after losing at Hopkinsville last week.

Next week Warren East will face Franklin-Simpson at home.
