Warren East started off the 2014 football season by hosting a South Warren team that beat them 35-0 in last year’s opener. The game started off sloppily for both teams, with four turnovers in the first 5 combined possessions. Antwan Gilbert threw an interception on his first and only attempt of the opening half and the Spartans could not capitalize on a possession starting in Raider territory.
Halfway through the 2nd quarter, South Warren forced a fumble and choraled it on Warren East’s side of the field. This time the Spartans took advantage of the field position by way of a Ryder Litten 27 yd touchdown run. Litten added a 39 yarder with 8:41 left in the third to put South Warren up 20-0.
Warren East made a couple comeback attempts. The first ended in Antwan Gilbert’s 2nd interception of the night after Willie Reynolds 28-yard run to break into the Spartan side of the field.
East wasn’t done, however. Eli Brown, who played almost exclusively on defense in the first half, broke free up the middle for a 79-yard TD run with less than a minute left in the third to cut the lead to 13. South Warren answered with 14 unanswered. Ryder Litten led a methodical drive down into the East redzone, handing the ball off to Julius Allen for a 10 yard score. A few possessions later, South Warren fell on a fumbled snap in the endzone to increase the lead to 34-7.
As the clock ticked under a minute, Anthony Eakles broke free up the left sideline, stopping at the one yard line. Anthony Sanders finished off the drive with 3-seconds left to cut the South Warren lead to a final score of 34-14.
This loss marked the first time the Raiders lost at home since 2011.
South Warren returns home to play Logan County next week while Warren East heads on the road to face Barren County.
