Veteran Experience hopes to get Lady Gators back to Diddle

Greenwood Lady Gators Preview

Record last season: 13-16

Postseason finish: Lost in 14th District Semifinals

Coach Zach Simpson enters his fifth season at The Swamp looking to return the Lady Gators to a place they haven’t been since 2012 – Diddle Arena. The eight-year hiatus seems something of an anomaly for the Greenwood program after qualifying for four-straight region tournaments between 2009 and 2012. Now Simpson and company will look to get back behind a number of returners who hope to make their mark on 2021.

Players to Watch

One major returner for the Lady Gators will be Jacqueline Jackson. The senior missed all of the 2019-20 season but averaged 15.1 points per game in 2018-19 when she was a sophomore. Jackson has the ability to play on or off the ball and is listed as a forward/guard. Another key returner will be freshman Leia Trinh, who averaged 15.6 points per game and was named to the All-Region third team. Trinh also shot better than 70% from the free throw line.

X-Factors

Sophomore Kayla Grant will be a key contributor for Greenwood in the frontcourt after averaging 8.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a season ago. Grant led the team in field goal percentage as well, right around 50%. Nicole Milam also could be an X-Factor after averaging 4.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Dates to Circle

January 22 @ Warren Central – An early season meeting the Lady Dragons as both teams should be among the region’s best

February 2 @ Barren County – Greenwood travels to Glasgow to take on a top-2 team in the region

March 4 vs. Russell County – Russell County travels to Bowling Green for a meeting with the Lady Gators in what could be an opening round preview for the 4th Region Tournament
