Warren Central falls to Christian County in Wes Strader Schoolboy Classic

The second annual Wes Strader Classic tipped off with Warren Central taking on Christian County on Saturday evening at Bowling Green High School.

The Dragons entered the game riding a two-game winning streak after beating Warren East on Monday and Friday nights, respectively, to lock up the No. 3 spot in the upcoming District 14 Tournament. The Colonels, who are ranked No. 9 in the Kentucky Associated Press Poll, ventured into Bowling Green after recording a 62-56 victory at Henderson County on Friday evening.

Thanks to an all-around performance from one of the team’s biggest starts, Detorrion Ware, who dropped 18 points, Christian County defeated Central, 62-53 in a game full of runs.

Along with Ware’s big outing, Jaylen Sebree scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. In their loss, the Dragons’ were led by Skyelar Potter (16) and Josh Moss (16), who combined for 32 points.

Warren Central returns to action on Monday night at Russellville. Tipoff is slated for 7:15 p.m.

Christian County came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, as it took an early 7-0 lead, powered by a three-pointer and jumpshot from Sebree. Warren Central responded with an intensive 11-0 run and made it 13-10 with 2:22 remaining in the opening quarter. The Dragons’ Jordan Cousin carried the team through the run with two threes of his own.

Later into the second period, the Colonels continued to execute and built back their lead throughout the eight-minute segment, as they took a ten-point lead into the locker room at halftime with the scoreboard reading 33-23. Sebree led all scorers with 14 points and 6 rebounds.

County came out and had a start similar to what it had to open the contest. The Colonels continued to knock down big shots and built a 44-25 advantage at the 5:03 mark of the third. Central fired back with a run, thanks to back-to-back baskets from Potter, and madr it a single-digit affair.

With just 1:42 left to play, Potter was doing all he can for the Dragons by scoring in a variety of ways and carrying his team, but Central couldn’t find a way to get over the hump and trailed 60-49. Already leading, Christian County would hit its free throws in the final minute and left Southcentral Kentucky with a key road win.
