GLASGOW – After being routed by defending Fourth Region runner-up Bowling Green 94-38 on the road last Tuesday, Glasgow was able to hang tough with defending region champion Warren Central for one half as the Scotties and Dragons were tied at 32-all at halftime.
But Warren Central turned up the defensive pressure and scored 16 unanswered points out of the locker room in a third quarter in which it outscored Glasgow 29-8, and the Dragons were able to pull away for a 84-62 victory over the Scotties on the road on Monday night.
“We guarded, we played well in the third quarter,” Warren Central coach William Unseld said. “We played well when we needed to. We needed a game like this where we’re tied at halftime in a hostile road environment, and we came out and battled in the third quarter.”
“In the second half we just rebounded better and guarded,” Warren Central senior Tayshaun Bibb said. “In the first half we didn’t rebound or guard as well. We let (Glasgow) get to the rim too easily. We just tightened up on that in the second half.”
Bibb led the Dragons in the win with 21 points while Kobe Brents tallied 16 points on four 3-pointers. It was Brents’ first game back in Glasgow after he transferred to Warren Central during the offseason.
“It meant more to me because I have been playing with these guys since like first or second grade and to go against them is something different,” Brents said. “It’s just not something that I’m used to so I went out and played hard.”
Warren Central (3-0) had two other players reach double figures as Geovonni Floyd and DeAndre Boyd scored 10 and 13 points, respectively.
The Dragons led 19-12 at the end of the first quarter before the Scotties came roaring back in the second frame.
Glasgow (4-2) opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run—Robert Kingery’s two free throws knotting the game up at 21-all with 5:54 left before halftime. The two sides exchanged baskets until halftime as both teams went to the locker room engaged in a 32-32 deadlock. Warren Central then pulled away in the second half, but Unseld was quick to give credit to how hard Glasgow played.
“(Glasgow) fought,” Unseld said. “Give them credit. But I was proud of how we came out in the second half.”
Nik Sorrell led Glasgow in the loss with 19 points while Bowen Haney finished with 11. Kingery and Tucker Kirkpatrick added 10 for the Scotties, who will look to bounce back on Friday night against fellow 15thDistrict opponent Monroe County.
Meanwhile Warren Central will have its first home game of the season as the Dragons host Franklin-Simpson in the Kentucky 2A Championship Sectional on Thursday night.
“I’m happy we’re 3-0. We’re 3-0 on the road; we finally get to go home and play a game,” Unseld said. “I’m proud of the kids. We’ve played in three different arenas and we’ve scored 80-plus in all three games. We just have to figure out how to guard somebody.”
Like Unseld, Bibb also believes that the Dragons need to improve their defense. The Dragon senior also thinks that his team is far from their full potential.
“The crazy thing about it is we haven’t reached our ceiling yet,” Bibb said. “We’re still far away from where we need to be, especially defensively. We have to tighten up on a lot of things.”
