Although Week 3 of the 2017 high school football season has just arrived, Warren East has turned many heads in two weeks of play.
The Raiders, who are off to their first 2-0 start since 2012, opened their season with a 21-0 win over Portland (Tenn.) before recording a 37-31 upset victory against Greenwood last Saturday in the Citizens First Bowl.
“We’ve got a lot of kids that have played football here the last four years,” Warren East head coach Jeff Griffith said following his team’s win over Greenwood. “It’s a deep senior class, we have some good underclassmen and we’ve got some good skill guys. It all boils down to if our offensive line can play — and I thought they really played well tonight.”
Warren East will have its hands full Friday when it hosts a tough Wayne County club on the blue turf. The Cardinals (2-0) defeated Woodford County 45-7 in Week 1 and are coming off a 29-27 home victory over Class 5A Pulaski County.
Wayne County quarterback Lorenzo Linsey has completed 35-of-60 passes for 525 yards and six touchdowns while wide receiver Aubrey Weaver has recorded 240 yards and three scores on 16 receptions.
“Wayne County is a top-3 4A team,” Griffith said. “It’s gonna be a good litmus test for us to see where we are. There’s a lot of good friends over there as well, so it’s gonna be a lot of fun.”
East quarterback Dwayne Cook has passed for 420 yards and four touchdowns, with all four tosses being TD receptions for wide receiver Caleb Huskey, who also has 375 receiving yards. Running back Trevor Naftel has ran for 310 yards and a pair of scores.
The Raiders are looking to move to 3-0 for the first time since 2012, a season in which East went 13-1 overall and made it to the Class 4A state semifinals.
