Warren Central outlasts Warren East in season’s first meeting

Warren Central and Warren East met for the first time on the season on Monday night at Warren Central High School in a makeup game that was cancelled due to inclement weather back in the earlier part of the month.

The Dragons, who swept the Raiders in the two meetings last year, entered the first matchup of 2017 after losing 70-43 on Friday at Bowling Green. Warren East hit the road following a 75-63 home victory over Glasgow on Saturday, which snapped a six-game losing streak.

Thanks to a stellar performance from Skyelar Potter, who scored 24 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, the Dragons (13-9) outlasted the Raiders (11-10), winning 63-55 in the two teams’ first game of the week.

Along with Potter’s big outing, Josh Moss dropped 16 points and pulled down 9 rebounds while Micale Mee added a production of 10 points and three rebounds. In its loss, Patrick Satterfield carried the load for Warren East with 24 points and 3 rebounds on the evening.

The Dragons return to action on Friday night at Warren East at 7:15 p.m. while the Raiders host Cumberland County on Tuesday, with tipoff slated for 7:30 p.m.

The two sides came out ready to battle.

After a low-scoring, all-defensive opening quarter, Warren Central held a 6-2 lead over Warren East. The two team’s offenses would awaken in the ensuing period, as they combined to score 41 points and bring both sides of Tim Riley Court to life.

At halftime, the Dragons held a slim 28-21 advantage, and were led by Potter and Josh Moss’ 8 points each. For the Raiders, Satterfield had also tallied 8 points of his own to help his club only trail by seven at the break.

Leading entering the second half, Warren Central came out fired up in the third and opened the quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 36-21 lead at the 6:14 mark. Warren East responded and made it an eleven point game at 41-30 with a minute left to play in the period and then only trailed by 10 at 43-33 entering the final 8 minutes.

The visiting Raiders cut even more into the Dragons’ lead, making it 47-39 with 6:18 left to play and then 47-42 thanks to a Tashawn Neal three-pointer. Central fired back with another 8-0 run, which made it 55-44 at the 3:01 mark.

Satterfield would score under the goal with under a minute left to tick, but it wouldn’t be enough, as Warren East fell short on the road to the Dragons.
